Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vaughan Williams is a favourite composer of mine. My introduction to his music came at the age of eight when I sat at my father's feet spellbound by the shivery sounds of the Tallis Fantasia. This book is my own study of the songs of Ralph Vaughan Williams. It was first written in 1979 and I am publishing it celebrate the centennial of the first performance of Vaughan Williams' masterpiece, On Wenlock Edge, in the Aeolian Hall, London, by tenor Gervase Elwes and the Schwiller Quartet with Frederick Kiddle (piano) 0n 15th November 1909. lts reception was mixed at the time as it was so new and impressionistic for a world used to Stanford, Parry and the great German tradition. I hope music lovers will be with me in spirit in my celebration of a truly wonderful piece of music and if you have not yet made its acquaintance that this book might stir your interest in listening to or performing it.

While some of the stories are traditional, set in “Alice Munro Country” in Ontario or in B.C., dealing with ordinary women’s lives, others have a new, sharper edge. They involve child murders, strange sex, and a terrifying home invasion. By way of astonishing variety, the title story, set in Victorian Europe, follows the last journey from France to Sweden of a famous Russian mathematician. This daring, superb collection proves that Alice Munro will always surprise you.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice and Nominated for the 2017 PEN/Bograd Weld Prize for Biography A captivating exploration of A. E. Housman and the influence of his particular brand of Englishness A. E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad made little impression when it was first published in 1896 but has since become one of the best-loved volumes of poetry in the English language. Its evocation of the English coun - tryside, thwarted love, and a yearning for things lost is as potent today as it was more than a century ago, and the book has never been out of print. In Housman Country, Peter Parker explores the lives of A. E. Housman and his most famous book, and in doing so shows how A Shropshire Lad has permeated English life and culture since its publication. The poems were taken to war by soldiers who wanted to carry England in their pockets, were adapted by composers trying to create a new kind of English music, and have influ - enced poetry, fiction, music, and drama right up to the present day. Everyone has a personal “land of lost content” with “blue remembered hills,” and Housman has been a tangible and far-reaching presence in a startling range of work, from the war poets and Ralph Vaughan Williams to Inspector Morse and Morrissey. Housman Country is a vivid exploration of England and Englishness, in which Parker maps out terrain that is as historical and emotional as it is topographical.

With text assembled from Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass", the work is scored for soprano and baritone soli, mixed chorus and large orchestra. With an average duration of 70 minutes, it is one of the longer pieces in the symphonic repertoire. The work's received its premiere under the composer's baton at the Leeds Festival on October 12, 1910 - Vaughan Williams' 38th birthday.
