Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Welsh History The following letters on Welsh history were written in compliance with a request on the part of the edi tors of the Christian Chronicle, a valuable weekly paper published in this city, and circulating chiefly among the Baptists. The immediate cause of this desire on the part of the editors, was the appearance of an able article in the Christian Review, on the Elements of Western Character, from the pen of Rev. J. M. Peck, of Rock Spring, Illinois. In reference to the Welsh, Mr. Peck says that for all the great principles that distinguish the American people they are indebted to the Welsh. No writer that I ever read has taken so correct a view of the character and principles of the relsh as Mr. Peck, and if he under stood the Welsh language we could not desire a better advocate. Moreover, coming from a native American there would be less cause of suspicion that he was biassed by national feelings and attachments. For myself, I can say that I am under many obligations to brother Peck; and the consciousness that his object is to make truth manifest does not lessen the obli gatien, for the exhibition of truth, especially in con nection with religion, human freedom, and happiness, is of far greater importance than national honour. Has heard mentioned, not only in the Principality, but in England also. Some of the Editor' s English friends - themselves being eminent in literature - have said to him, Wechave often heard that there is much of value in your literature and of beauty in your poetry. Why does not some one of your literati translate them into English, and furnish us with the means of judging for ourselves? We possess translated specimens of the literature, and especially the poetry of almost every other nation and people, and should feel greater interest in reading those of the aborigines of this country, with whom we have so much in common. Book Synopsis The Place-Names of Wales (Classic Reprint) by : Thomas Morgan
Download or read book The Place-Names of Wales (Classic Reprint) written by Thomas Morgan and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place-Names of Wales The first edition of this work was published in 1887, and was sold out in a very short time. Orders were continually sent for copies, but none could be found in the market. Eventually, J. E. Southall, Newport, who has taken deep interest in Welsh literature, wrote to ask the author for permission to publish a second edition of it. Arrangements were made to revise the work carefully and to bring it up to date. The omission of Monmouthshire Place-Names is due to the following fact: The author won a 10: 10s. prize in the Newport National Eisteddfod, 1897, for "A Dictionary of Welsh Names of Places and Rivers in Monmouthshire" and it is intended to publish a separate edition of this in due course. The author gratefully acknowledges the service rendered by S. J. Evans, Esq., M. A., Llangefni, in revising this work. His suggestions were useful and destined to enhance the value of the work. In conclusion, the author repeats what he said in the first edition: "In writing upon a subject so full of intricacies and difficulties the author is far from satisfied with his etymological attempts in many instances." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Worthines of Wales Thomas Churchyard, reprinted in exact con formity to the original editions, has been long felt to be a great desideratum. The republications issued by Mr. J. P. Collier, valuable in themselves, have only applied to selected pieces, and the very limited number of copies printed have left the original demand, even as respects those, in a great measure unsatisfied. To remedy this generally admitted want, the Council of the Spenser Society propose, if the feeling of the members appear to coincide with theirs, to reproduce, according as they can be conveniently issued with due regard to the completion of other works now in progress, the various writings of Thomas Churchyard, and have now the pleasure of submitting, as a preliminary specimen, T lze Wort/zines of Wales, which has always been considered as one of the most interesting and valuable of his poetical productions, and is now reprinted as nearly as possible in fac-simile form from the beautiful copy of the original. Download or read book An Analysis of the History of Wales (Classic Reprint) written by Howell T. Evans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Analysis of the History of Wales Any attempt at writing an Analysis of the History of Wales involves the initial difficulty that there exists no comprehensive history on which it may be based. A few admirable Short Histories have appeared in recent years, but they are obviously inadequate for the purpose. Much has also been written on various aspects of Welsh History, but it necessarily lacks the unity of a complete work. This Analysis could not, therefore, be based on any one historical work. Still, despite the frag mentary character of its origin, an attempt has been made to give it the unity and continuity of a complete history.
