Book Synopsis Partial Differential Equations by : Walter A. Strauss
Download or read book Partial Differential Equations written by Walter A. Strauss and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-12-21 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the fundamental processes of the natural world is based to a large extent on partial differential equations (PDEs). The second edition of Partial Differential Equations provides an introduction to the basic properties of PDEs and the ideas and techniques that have proven useful in analyzing them. It provides the student a broad perspective on the subject, illustrates the incredibly rich variety of phenomena encompassed by it, and imparts a working knowledge of the most important techniques of analysis of the solutions of the equations. In this book mathematical jargon is minimized. Our focus is on the three most classical PDEs: the wave, heat and Laplace equations. Advanced concepts are introduced frequently but with the least possible technicalities. The book is flexibly designed for juniors, seniors or beginning graduate students in science, engineering or mathematics.
Book Synopsis Involutive Hyperbolic Differential Systems by : Deane Yang
Download or read book Involutive Hyperbolic Differential Systems written by Deane Yang and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1987 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cartan-Kähler theorem demonstrates that certain real analytic exterior differential systems--ones which Cartan dubbed "involutive"--admit local real analytic solutions. The proof reduces the system to a set of determined systems of PDE's which are then solved using the Cauchy-Kovalevski theorem. The subtlety in the theorem and in the definition of involutivity lies in checking that the "solution" obtained from the determined systems does in fact satisfy the original differential system.

Book Synopsis Hyperbolic Differential Operators And Related Problems by : Vincenzo Ancona
Download or read book Hyperbolic Differential Operators And Related Problems written by Vincenzo Ancona and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-03-06 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting research from more than 30 international authorities, this reference provides a complete arsenal of tools and theorems to analyze systems of hyperbolic partial differential equations. The authors investigate a wide variety of problems in areas such as thermodynamics, electromagnetics, fluid dynamics, differential geometry, and topology. Renewing thought in the field of mathematical physics, Hyperbolic Differential Operators defines the notion of pseudosymmetry for matrix symbols of order zero as well as the notion of time function. Surpassing previously published material on the topic, this text is key for researchers and mathematicians specializing in hyperbolic, Schrödinger, Einstein, and partial differential equations; complex analysis; and mathematical physics.

This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the issue of uniqueness of a solution to a problem – a very important topic in science and technology, particularly in the field of partial differential equations, where uniqueness guarantees that certain partial differential equations are sufficient to model a given phenomenon. This book is intended to be a short introduction to uniqueness questions for initial value problems. One often weakens the notion of a solution to include non-differentiable solutions. Such a solution is called a weak solution. It is easier to find a weak solution, but it is more difficult to establish its uniqueness. This book examines three very fundamental equations: ordinary differential equations, scalar conservation laws, and Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Starting from the standard Gronwall inequality, this book discusses less regular ordinary differential equations. It includes an introduction of advanced topics like the theory of maximal monotone operators as well as what is called DiPerna-Lions theory, which is still an active research area. For conservation laws, the uniqueness of entropy solution, a special (discontinuous) weak solution is explained. For Hamilton-Jacobi equations, several uniqueness results are established for a viscosity solution, a kind of a non-differentiable weak solution. The uniqueness of discontinuous viscosity solution is also discussed. A detailed proof is given for each uniqueness statement. The reader is expected to learn various fundamental ideas and techniques in mathematical analysis for partial differential equations by establishing uniqueness. No prerequisite other than simple calculus and linear algebra is necessary. For the reader’s convenience, a list of basic terminology is given at the end of this book.
