This book was released on 1997-07-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this introductory textbook, a revised and extended version of well-known lectures by L. Hörmander from 1986, four chapters are devoted to weak solutions of systems of conservation laws. Apart from that the book only studies classical solutions. Two chapters concern the existence of global solutions or estimates of the lifespan for solutions of nonlinear perturbations of the wave or Klein-Gordon equation with small initial data. Four chapters are devoted to microanalysis of the singularities of the solutions. This part assumes some familiarity with pseudodifferential operators which are standard in the theory of linear differential operators, but the extension to the more exotic classes of opertors needed in the nonlinear theory is presented in complete detail.

Book excerpt: Combining geometrical and microlocal tools, this monograph gives detailed proofs of many well/ill-posed results related to the Cauchy problem for differential operators with non-effectively hyperbolic double characteristics. Previously scattered over numerous different publications, the results are presented from the viewpoint that the Hamilton map and the geometry of bicharacteristics completely characterizes the well/ill-posedness of the Cauchy problem. A doubly characteristic point of a differential operator P of order m (i.e. one where Pm = dPm = 0) is effectively hyperbolic if the Hamilton map FPm has real non-zero eigen values. When the characteristics are at most double and every double characteristic is effectively hyperbolic, the Cauchy problem for P can be solved for arbitrary lower order terms. If there is a non-effectively hyperbolic characteristic, solvability requires the subprincipal symbol of P to lie between −Pμj and Pμj , where iμj are the positive imaginary eigenvalues of FPm . Moreover, if 0 is an eigenvalue of FPm with corresponding 4 × 4 Jordan block, the spectral structure of FPm is insufficient to determine whether the Cauchy problem is well-posed and the behavior of bicharacteristics near the doubly characteristic manifold plays a crucial role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperbolic Equations and Related Topics covers the proceedings of the Taniguchi International Symposium, held in Katata, Japan on August 27-31, 1984 and in Kyoto, Japan on September 3-5, 1984. The book focuses on the mathematical analyses involved in hyperbolic equations. The selection first elaborates on complex vector fields; holomorphic extension of CR functions and related problems; second microlocalization and propagation of singularities for semi-linear hyperbolic equations; and scattering matrix for two convex obstacles. Discussions focus on the construction of asymptotic solutions, singular vector fields and Leibniz formula, second microlocalization along a Lagrangean submanifold, and hypo-analytic structures. The text then ponders on the Cauchy problem for effectively hyperbolic equations and for uniformly diagonalizable hyperbolic systems in Gevrey classes. The book takes a look at generalized Hamilton flows and singularities of solutions of the hyperbolic Cauchy problem and analytic and Gevrey well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for second order weakly hyperbolic equations with coefficients irregular in time. The selection is a dependable reference for researchers interested in hyperbolic equations.

Book excerpt: There are currently many practical situations in which one wishes to determine the coefficients in an ordinary or partial differential equation from known functionals of its solution. These are often called "inverse problems of mathematical physics" and may be contrasted with problems in which an equation is given and one looks for its solution under initial and boundary conditions. Although inverse problems are often ill-posed in the classical sense, their practical importance is such that they may be considered among the pressing problems of current mathematical re search. A. N. Tihonov showed [82], [83] that there is a broad class of inverse problems for which a particular non-classical definition of well-posed ness is appropriate. This new definition requires that a solution be unique in a class of solutions belonging to a given subset M of a function space. The existence of a solution in this set is assumed a priori for some set of data. The classical requirement of continuous dependence of the solution on the data is retained but it is interpreted differently. It is required that solutions depend continuously only on that data which does not take the solutions out of M.

Book excerpt: This excellent introduction to hyperbolic differential equations is devoted to linear equations and symmetric systems, as well as conservation laws. The book is divided into two parts. The first, which is intuitive and easy to visualize, includes all aspects of the theory involving vector fields and integral curves; the second describes the wave equation and its perturbations for two- or three-space dimensions. Over 100 exercises are included, as well as "do it yourself" instructions for the proofs of many theorems. Only an understanding of differential calculus is required. Notes at the end of the self-contained chapters, as well as references at the end of the book, enable ease-of-use for both the student and the independent researcher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Volume 1: Population, Reactors, Tides and Waves: Theory and Applications covers three general areas of hyperbolic partial differential equation applications. These areas include problems related to the McKendrick/Von Foerster population equations, other hyperbolic form equations, and the numerical solution. This text is composed of 15 chapters and begins with surveys of age specific population interactions, populations models of diffusion, nonlinear age dependent population growth with harvesting, local and global stability for the nonlinear renewal equation in the Von Foerster model, and nonlinear age-dependent population dynamics. The next chapters deal with various applications of hyperbolic partial differential equations to such areas as age-structured fish populations, density dependent growth in a cell colony, boll-weevil-cotton crop modeling, age dependent predation and cannibalism, parasite populations, growth of microorganisms, and stochastic perturbations in the Von Foerster model. These topics are followed by discussions of bifurcation of time periodic solutions of the McKendrick equation; the periodic solution of nonlinear hyperbolic problems; and semigroup theory as applied to nonlinear age dependent population dynamics. Other chapters explore the stability of biochemical reaction tanks, an ADI model for the Laplace tidal equations, the Carleman equation, the nonequilibrium behavior of solids that transport heat by second sound, and the nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations and dynamic programming. The final chapters highlight two explicitly numerical applications: a predictor-convex corrector method and the Galerkin approximation in hyperbolic partial differential equations. This book will prove useful to practicing engineers, population researchers, physicists, and mathematicians.

Book excerpt: These notes are based on the lectures given on partial differential equations at the University of Michigan during the winter semester of 1972, with some extensions. The students to whom these lectures were addressed were assumed to have knowledge of elementary functional analysis, the Fourier transform, distribution theory, and Sobolev spaces, and such tools are used without comment. In this monography, we develop one tool, the calculus of pseudo differential operators, and apply it to several of the main problems of partial differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The approach to the Cauchy problem taken here by the authors is based on theuse of Fourier integral operators with a complex-valued phase function, which is a time function chosen suitably according to the geometry of the multiple characteristics. The correctness of the Cauchy problem in the Gevrey classes for operators with hyperbolic principal part is shown in the first part. In the second part, the correctness of the Cauchy problem for effectively hyperbolic operators is proved with a precise estimate of the loss of derivatives. This method can be applied to other (non) hyperbolic problems. The text is based on a course of lectures given for graduate students but will be of interest to researchers interested in hyperbolic partial differential equations. In the latter part the reader is expected to be familiar with some theory of pseudo-differential operators.

Book excerpt: "This book will be useful for students and specialists of partial differential equations and the mathematical sciences because it clarifies crucial points of Kreiss' symmetrizer technique. The Kreiss technique was developed by H.O. Kreiss for initial boundary value problems for linear hyperbolic systems. This technique is important because it involves equations that are used in many of the applied sciences. The research presented in this book takes unique approaches to exploring the Kreiss technique that will add insight and new perspectives to linear hyperbolic problems"--Publ. web site.
