Book Synopsis Parameter Setting in Evolutionary Algorithms by : F.J. Lobo
Download or read book Parameter Setting in Evolutionary Algorithms written by F.J. Lobo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-04-03 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main difficulties of applying an evolutionary algorithm (or, as a matter of fact, any heuristic method) to a given problem is to decide on an appropriate set of parameter values. Typically these are specified before the algorithm is run and include population size, selection rate, operator probabilities, not to mention the representation and the operators themselves. This book gives the reader a solid perspective on the different approaches that have been proposed to automate control of these parameters as well as understanding their interactions. The book covers a broad area of evolutionary computation, including genetic algorithms, evolution strategies, genetic programming, estimation of distribution algorithms, and also discusses the issues of specific parameters used in parallel implementations, multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, and practical consideration for real-world applications. It is a recommended read for researchers and practitioners of evolutionary computation and heuristic methods.

Book Synopsis Parallel Problem Solving from Nature - PPSN III by : Yuval Davidor
Download or read book Parallel Problem Solving from Nature - PPSN III written by Yuval Davidor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-09-21 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges in ecosystem science encompass a broadening and strengthening of interdisciplinary ties, the transfer of knowledge of the ecosystem across scales, and the inclusion of anthropogenic impacts and human behavior into ecosystem, landscape, and regional models. The volume addresses these points within the context of studies in major ecosystem types viewed as the building blocks of central European landscapes. The research is evaluated to increase the understanding of the processes in order to unite ecosystem science with resource management. The comparison embraces coastal lowland forests, associated wetlands and lakes, agricultural land use, and montane and alpine forests. Techniques for upscaling focus on process modelling at stand and landscape scales and the use of remote sensing for landscape-level model parameterization and testing. The case studies demonstrate ways for ecosystem scientists, managers, and social scientists to cooperate.
Book Synopsis Evolutionary Computation, Machine Learning and Data Mining in Bioinformatics by : Mario Giacobini
Download or read book Evolutionary Computation, Machine Learning and Data Mining in Bioinformatics written by Mario Giacobini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th European Conference on Evolutionary Computation, Machine Learning and Data Mining in Bioinformatics, EvoBIO 2012, held in Málaga, Spain, in April 2012 co-located with the Evo* 2012 events. The 15 revised full papers presented together with 8 poster papers were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. Computational Biology is a wide and varied discipline, incorporating aspects of statistical analysis, data structure and algorithm design, machine learning, and mathematical modeling toward the processing and improved understanding of biological data. Experimentalists now routinely generate new information on such a massive scale that the techniques of computer science are needed to establish any meaningful result. As a consequence, biologists now face the challenges of algorithmic complexity and tractability, and combinatorial explosion when conducting even basic analyses.

Book Synopsis Genetic Algorithm Essentials by : Oliver Kramer
Download or read book Genetic Algorithm Essentials written by Oliver Kramer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-07 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to genetic algorithms (GAs) with an emphasis on making the concepts, algorithms, and applications discussed as easy to understand as possible. Further, it avoids a great deal of formalisms and thus opens the subject to a broader audience in comparison to manuscripts overloaded by notations and equations. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which provides an introduction to GAs, starting with basic concepts like evolutionary operators and continuing with an overview of strategies for tuning and controlling parameters. In turn, the second part focuses on solution space variants like multimodal, constrained, and multi-objective solution spaces. Lastly, the third part briefly introduces theoretical tools for GAs, the intersections and hybridizations with machine learning, and highlights selected promising applications.

Book Synopsis Massively Parallel Evolutionary Computation on GPGPUs by : Shigeyoshi Tsutsui
Download or read book Massively Parallel Evolutionary Computation on GPGPUs written by Shigeyoshi Tsutsui and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are metaheuristics that learn from natural collective behavior and are applied to solve optimization problems in domains such as scheduling, engineering, bioinformatics, and finance. Such applications demand acceptable solutions with high-speed execution using finite computational resources. Therefore, there have been many attempts to develop platforms for running parallel EAs using multicore machines, massively parallel cluster machines, or grid computing environments. Recent advances in general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) have opened up this possibility for parallel EAs, and this is the first book dedicated to this exciting development. The three chapters of Part I are tutorials, representing a comprehensive introduction to the approach, explaining the characteristics of the hardware used, and presenting a representative project to develop a platform for automatic parallelization of evolutionary computing (EC) on GPGPUs. The 10 chapters in Part II focus on how to consider key EC approaches in the light of this advanced computational technique, in particular addressing generic local search, tabu search, genetic algorithms, differential evolution, swarm optimization, ant colony optimization, systolic genetic search, genetic programming, and multiobjective optimization. The 6 chapters in Part III present successful results from real-world problems in data mining, bioinformatics, drug discovery, crystallography, artificial chemistries, and sudoku. Although the parallelism of EAs is suited to the single-instruction multiple-data (SIMD)-based GPU, there are many issues to be resolved in design and implementation, and a key feature of the contributions is the practical engineering advice offered. This book will be of value to researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in the areas of evolutionary computation and scientific computing.
