Book Synopsis A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from British Sites by : Martin Henig
Download or read book A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from British Sites written by Martin Henig and published by Archaeopress Archaeology. This book was released on 1978 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The primary purpose of an engraved gem or ring-bezel, cut in intaglio, was to make an impression upon some fictile material., which would be understood by the owner of the device, and by his associates, as a personal signature.' So began Martin Henig's original BAR Number 7 from 1978, in the British Series of British Archaeological Reports, a catalogue and study of over 1000 Roman engraved gemstones from the British Isles. Nearly 30 years later comes the third edition of this study, the new Preface to which concludes: 'Over the years I have thought more about gems in relation to other arts and have integrated glyptics into my book on The Art of Roman Britain (1995). Several papers I have written recently have attempted to use gems, like sculpture, painting and bronzes to elucidate general artistic problems. This should be obvious but how many art-historians seem to have the inclination to take gems seriously? At least interest in provincial glyptics seems greater today and that gives me grounds for hope Important studies are being conducted across the Empire ranging from Belgium . and Portugal ., toTurkey . andIsrael. It is for each new generation to reassess theevidence, in the case of our subjectwith the aid of new techniques, of computing on the one hand and scientific analysis of materials and cutting techniques on the other. In addition the fresh eye of youth is always invaluable. Someone else can often see what should have been obvious to one all the time. (Wolfson College, Oxford. Feast of St Frideswide, 2005)'
Book Synopsis Clothing the Past: Surviving Garments from Early Medieval to Early Modern Western Europe by : Elizabeth Coatsworth
Download or read book Clothing the Past: Surviving Garments from Early Medieval to Early Modern Western Europe written by Elizabeth Coatsworth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An astonishing number of medieval garments survive, more-or-less complete. Here the authors present 100 items, ranging from homely to princely. The book’s wide-ranging introduction discusses the circumstances in which garments have survived to the present; sets and collections; constructional and decorative techniques; iconography; inscriptions on garments; style and fashion. Detailed descriptions and discussions explain technique and ornament, investigate alleged associations with famous people (many of them spurious) and demonstrate, even when there are no known associations, how a garment may reveal its own biography: a story that can include repair, remaking, recycling; burial, resurrection and veneration; accidental loss or deliberate deposition. The authors both have many publications in the field of medieval studies, including previous collaborations on medieval textiles such as Medieval Textiles of the British Isles AD 450-1100: an Annotated Bibliography (2007), the Encyclopedia of Medieval Dress and Textiles of the British Isles (2012) and online bibliographies.

Book Synopsis The Roman Empire and Medieval Realms by : Nigel Kelly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic comedy triple. Sandra Bullock stars in 'The Proposal' (2009) as Margaret Tate, a tyrannical business executive on the brink of deportation from the United States back to her homeland of Canada. Margaret coerces her young assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) into marrying her so that she can stay in the country and he can stay in his job. In order to keep up the facade, Margaret must now endure a trip to Alaska to meet her future in-laws (Mary Steenburgen and Craig T. Nelson). In 'Runaway Bride' (1999), Ike Graham (Richard Gere) is a successful, flippant and misogynstic New York journalist, who writes an accusing piece on the antics of Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts), a Maryland woman who has left three men at the altar. When Maggie protests about the inaccuracies in the article, Ike is fired. Ike decides to pursue the story further, and journeys to Maryland, where he meets Maggie and discovers she is due to be married for a fourth time. As Ike gets to know Maggie, he begins to fall for her charms, and realises why so many men before have been led down the aisle. In 'Pretty Woman', lonely businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) hires LA prostitute Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) to give him directions when he gets lost, and later to be his escort while he goes wheeling and dealing for a week. He buys her clothes, she softens his heart and the unlikely couple fall head over heels in love.
