Book Synopsis On the Thermodynamics of Calcite by : Firmin Joseph Krieger
Download or read book On the Thermodynamics of Calcite written by Firmin Joseph Krieger and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermodynamics of calcite, CaCO3, are investigated over a range of temperatures up to 6000 K and pressures up to 100,000 atmospheres. Two sets of equilibrium composition equations are used--one representing a pure gas phase, the other a heterogeneous system of gas and condensed (i.e., solid or liquid) calcia, CaO. The gas phase of the heterogeneous chemical system, like the homogeneous gas phase, comprises 13 gaseous calcium-carbonoxygen species. The results of the computational program are presented in both tabular and graphic form. The latter is a conventional Mollier diagram in which specific enthalpy is plotted against specific entropy, with cross plots of temperature, pressure, and molecular weight. (Author).

Book excerpt: First published in 1994, this resource takes the reader beyond the fundamental principles of thermodynamics to true geochemical applications, providing complete coverage of the phase rule, chemography, solid solutions, ionic activities in the mixed aqueous electrolytes, and chemical potential diagrams for multiphase systems, plus other concepts central to geochemical theory.
Book Synopsis Thermodynamics in Geochemistry by : Greg M. Anderson
Download or read book Thermodynamics in Geochemistry written by Greg M. Anderson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-06-17 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook and reference outlines the fundamental principles of thermodynamics, emphasizing applications in geochemistry. The work is distinguished by its comprehensive, balanced coverage and its rigorous presentation. The authors bring years of teaching experience to the work, and have attempted to particularly address those areas where other texts on the subject have provided inadequate coverage. A thorough review of the necessary mathematics is presented early on, both as a refresher for those with a background in university calculus, and for the benefit of those coming to the subject for the first time. The text is written for students in advanced undergraduate or graduate-level geochemistry as well as for all researchers in this field.

Download or read book Geochemistry written by William M. White and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-22 with total page 1218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of geochemistry. The book first lays out the ‘geochemical toolbox’: the basic principles and techniques of modern geochemistry, beginning with a review of thermodynamics and kinetics as they apply to the Earth and its environs. These basic concepts are then applied to understanding processes in aqueous systems and the behavior of trace elements in magmatic systems. Subsequent chapters introduce radiogenic and stable isotope geochemistry and illustrate their application to such diverse topics as determining geologic time, ancient climates, and the diets of prehistoric peoples. The focus then broadens to the formation of the solar system, the Earth, and the elements themselves. Then the composition of the Earth itself becomes the topic, examining the composition of the core, the mantle, and the crust and exploring how this structure originated. A final chapter covers organic chemistry, including the origin of fossil fuels and the carbon cycle’s role in controlling Earth’s climate, both in the geologic past and the rapidly changing present. Geochemistry is essential reading for all earth science students, as well as for researchers and applied scientists who require an introduction to the essential theory of geochemistry, and a survey of its applications in the earth and environmental sciences. Book Synopsis Thermodynamics of Natural Systems by : G. M. Anderson
Download or read book Thermodynamics of Natural Systems written by G. M. Anderson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-28 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermodynamics deals with energy levels and the transfer of energy between states of matter, and is therefore fundamental to all branches of science. This edition provides a relatively advanced treatment of the subject, specifically tailored for the interests of the Earth sciences. The first four chapters explain all necessary concepts, using a simple graphical approach. Throughout the rest of the book the author emphasizes the use of thermodynamics to construct mathematical simulations of real systems. This helps to make the many abstract concepts acceptable. Many computer programs are mentioned and used throughout the text, especially SUPCRT92, a widely used source of thermodynamic data. An associated website includes links to useful information sites and computer programs and problem sets. Building on the more elementary material in the first edition, this textbook will be ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in geology, geochemistry, geophysics and environmental science.
