Book Synopsis Mathematical Knowledge: Its Growth Through Teaching by : Alan Bishop
Download or read book Mathematical Knowledge: Its Growth Through Teaching written by Alan Bishop and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first BACOMET volume different perspectives on issues concerning teacher education in mathematics were presented (B. Christiansen, A. G. Howson and M. Otte, Perspectives on Mathematics Education, Reidel, Dordrecht, 1986). Underlying all of them was the fundamental problem area of the relationships between mathematical knowledge and the teaching and learning processes. The subsequent project BACOMET 2, whose outcomes are presented in this book, continued this work, especially by focusing on the genesis of mathematical knowledge in the classroom. The book developed over the period 1985-9 through several meetings, much discussion and considerable writing and redrafting. Our major concern was to try to analyse what we considered to be the most significant aspects of the relationships in order to enable mathematics educators to be better able to handle the kinds of complex issues facing all mathematics educators as we approach the end of the twentieth century. With access to mathematics education widening all the time, with a multi tude of new materials and resources being available each year, with complex cultural and social interactions creating a fluctuating context of education, with all manner of technology becoming more and more significant, and with both informal education (through media of different kinds) and non formal education (courses of training etc. ) growing apace, the nature of formal mathematical education is increasingly needing analysis.
Book Synopsis Enhancing Security, Sustainability and Resilience in Energy, Food and Water by : Marko Keskinen
Download or read book Enhancing Security, Sustainability and Resilience in Energy, Food and Water written by Marko Keskinen and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the ways that energy, food, and water help to create connections between sustainability and security. The concept of security is in our current societies increasingly connected with sustainability, which seeks to ensure that we as humans are able to live and prosper on this planet now and in the future. The concepts of energy security, food security, and water security—used separately or together—manifest the burgeoning linkages between security and sustainability. This book brings together ten scientific articles that look at different aspects of security, sustainability, and resilience with an emphasis on energy, food, and/or water in the context of Finland and Europe. Together, the articles portray a rich picture on the diverse linkages between both energy, food, and water, and between security and sustainability. In sum, the articles and related preface conclude that ensuring sustainable security—or secure sustainability—requires systemic, structured processes that link the policies and actors in these two important but still distant fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author charts her developing ideas as she undertakes a several-year-long inquiry into an investigative, constructivist approach to mathematics teaching. She presents an account of constructivism as a philosophy of knowledge and learning, provides a rationale for the research methods she employs, and details case studies in the teaching and thinking of three teachers. The research took place in the UK before the introduction of the National Curriculum. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Theory for Education's ease of use, clarity and comprehensive scope will be invaluable for those entering the field. Adapted from Theory for Religious Studies, by William E. Deal and Timothy K. Beal.
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Mathematics Education by : Paul Ernest
Download or read book The Philosophy of Mathematics Education written by Paul Ernest and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey provides a brief and selective overview of research in the philosophy of mathematics education. It asks what makes up the philosophy of mathematics education, what it means, what questions it asks and answers, and what is its overall importance and use? It provides overviews of critical mathematics education, and the most relevant modern movements in the philosophy of mathematics. A case study is provided of an emerging research tradition in one country. This is the Hermeneutic strand of research in the philosophy of mathematics education in Brazil. This illustrates one orientation towards research inquiry in the philosophy of mathematics education. It is part of a broader practice of ‘philosophical archaeology’: the uncovering of hidden assumptions and buried ideologies within the concepts and methods of research and practice in mathematics education. An extensive bibliography is also included.
Book Synopsis Cognitive Development to Adolescence by : Ken Richardson
Download or read book Cognitive Development to Adolescence written by Ken Richardson and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive Development to Adolescence aims to bring to the student the fundamental questions arising in theory and research in the child's life from about 4-12 years, together with the major contemporary responses to those questions. These include the three major perspectives of Piaget, Bruner and Vygotsky, and recent reflections on these; the question of 'stages'; metacognition; conceptual development; social cognition, information-processing approaches; and implications for education. Prepared as a source book for a third-level Open University course, Cognitive Development, this volume will also be of interest to other people interested in learning more about the abilities and mental processes of infants, and about current research and theory in these areas. It will be particularly appropriate for use in under-graduate and graduate courses in psychology with a developmental context.

Book Synopsis Mapping Biology Knowledge by : K. Fisher
Download or read book Mapping Biology Knowledge written by K. Fisher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-11-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping Biology Knowledge addresses two key topics in the context of biology, promoting meaningful learning and knowledge mapping as a strategy for achieving this goal. Meaning-making and meaning-building are examined from multiple perspectives throughout the book. In many biology courses, students become so mired in detail that they fail to grasp the big picture. Various strategies are proposed for helping instructors focus on the big picture, using the `need to know' principle to decide the level of detail students must have in a given situation. The metacognitive tools described here serve as support systems for the mind, creating an arena in which learners can operate on ideas. They include concept maps, cluster maps, webs, semantic networks, and conceptual graphs. These tools, compared and contrasted in this book, are also useful for building and assessing students' content and cognitive skills. The expanding role of computers in mapping biology knowledge is also explored.
