Book excerpt: The overall objective of this research is to develop a decision support framework for preventive maintenance program implementations in the offshore operational environment of the oil and gas industry. The author investigates the problems surrounding the maintenance decision-making process, which elements are systematically identified and categorized, including organizational aspects. The interface with operations is considered in order to promote integration between maintenance and production schedules. The research subjacent objectives have been to identify, among major oil and gas offshore operators, the state-of-practices regarding the maintenance decision-making process and identify, in the literature, the main techniques used for maintenance decisions and optimization in order to propose alternatives for supporting future implementations. Through a Systems Engineering approach, assisted by a literature review, interviews with experts (in Norway and in Brazil), an on-line survey and case studies, the results of this research complement a toolkit for maintenance engineers and managers aiming to facilitate information sharing and interdisciplinary cooperation in the operational environment. Among the results: A concept map for the maintenance decision-making process ontology; A plan for PM program implementations; The suggested cross-sector solution: the minimum equipment list; A Markovian dependability nomogram; and A Markov decision model application.

Book excerpt: At present, a highly efficient tool for organic synthesis is the combination of organocatalytic and multicomponent processes. In the organocatalysis reaction it is possible to generate a reactive intermediate with high enantioselectivity and later, in the multicomponent stage, the complexity and structural diversity of the process increases. This strategy allows the synthesis of various analogues of optically active natural compounds and biologically relevant molecules of pharmacological interest, which are essential for human life. The current study, which is divided into three chapters, describes a methodology for the synthesis of tetrasubstituted cliclopentene derivatives from an organocatalytic reaction, followed by a multicomponent Ugi-type reaction under continuous flow regime. The use of green solvents in each reaction step, as well as the adoption of flow chemistry, led to obtaining products with high yield and enantiomerically-enriched in a fast and efficient manner, allowing the development of more sustainable strategies in synthetic chemistry.

Book excerpt: This research evaluates whether the new model of investment agreement developed by Brazil (CFIA) is a mechanism for enhancing protection and respect for social and economic rights. The research starts by exploring the origins of investment treaties, their development and main characteristics. It examines why investment treaties and socio-economic rights are related, by mapping cases in which investment treaties have already impaired the protection of such rights. The research then analyzes how these two issues shall be jointly handled. It considers international organizations? initiatives to regulate business and human rights and investment treaties? frameworks that foster sustainable development, as well as new investment agreements? models developed by different countries, and then suggests criteria for evaluating whether an investment treaty is adequate from the socio-economic rights standpoint. Finally, this research investigates the CFIA model, brings a brief historical overview, evaluates CFIAs? wording, and examines how some CFIAs? institutional mechanisms consider corporate social responsibility issues. In conclusion, this research asserts that the CFIA model can be a mechanism for enhancing protection and respect for socio-economic rights, but some concerns (particularly related to safeguarding States? regulatory space and providing for stronger obligations to investors and States to protect human rights) need to be addressed.

Book excerpt: In 2022, the 100th anniversary of the so-called "Critical Theory," the antithesis of "Traditional Theory", was celebrated. 100 years ago, the first founding memorandum of the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt was written. In 2022, the world and legal theory are surprised by numerous new challenges, such as a war as not been seen for a long time, which requires an uprising to resignify the Critical Theory and its relevance within theories of justice and freedom, as well as a celebration of truly critical dialogues. The present collection brings together experienced legal theory researchers, who revive the critical theory from the current demands of law. Critical thinkers have been developing reflections on capitalism in a way that considers not just economic perspectives, but also individual's social and cultural spheres of life.

Who has never felt vulnerable after a negotiation after realizing that they did not recognize a tactic their counterpart used? Just like in a game of chess, negotiation tactics are intentional practices adopted during negotiations in order to produce the desired and predetermined effects on the counterpart you are negotiating with. For this reason, it is vital to know them, both to improve your understanding of the scenario in which you are negotiating and to know how and when to use them in order to maximize the desired results. This book compiles the 48 most powerful negotiation tactics, constituting a practical guide that presents not only the description of each tactic but also the explanation of how and why they work, their desired effects, examples of applications, and, mainly, how to neutralize them when they are used against you. Once you have finished reading, you will certainly be better prepared to understand the negotiations in which you will participate, as well as have at your disposal a real guide to facilitate your decision on how to act during them. In short: this book is a must-have, it is a practical guide to always have on your side to be ready and willing to negotiate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When transnational couples split, one of the parents wants to reestablish the status quo ante. But now there is a child. Rodrigo Meira brings to light this problem in Brazil and delivered the first research that has delved into the court files, with a view to understanding international abduction in Brazil. The author worked at the Brazilian Central Authority and is concluding his PhD in International Law, in which he examines Brazilian compliance, analyzing cases from 2002 to 2022 and interviewing other professionals who deal everyday with the problem. Meira shows what lies behind this procedural slowness, critically analyzing the culture of biased interpretation by procedural means. He also suggests good points for future changes in Brazilian Law. A compelling bestseller for students, undergraduate and graduate, treating core issues from a lawyer?s perspective. Rather than responding to child abduction with strict legal proceedings, the work argues that national solutions must be met, based on previous international experience. The Long and Winding Lawsuit is also a vade mecum for practitioners desiring a solid footing to make further enquiries on international child abduction in Brazil. This eye-opening book overlaps the lack of information on international abduction and explains the resilience of Brazilian Judiciary to comply with the conventional terms, suggesting what can be done to change this profile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil and gas industry is going through a major technological shift. This is particularly true of the Norwegian continental shelf where new work processes are being implemented based on digital infrastructure and information technology. The term Integrated Operations (IO) has been applied to this set of new processes. It is defined by the Centre for Integrated Operations in the Petroleum Industry as 'work processes and technology to make smarter decisions and better execution, enabled by ubiquitous real time data, collaborative techniques and access to multiple expertise'. It's claimed that IO is efficient, optimises exploration, reduces costs and improves safety performance. However, the picture is not as clear-cut as it may appear. On the one hand, the new work processes do not prevent major accidents: IO-related factors have been identified in recent events such as the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe. On the other hand, IO technology provides improved decision-making support (such as access to real-time data and expertise), which can reduce human and material losses and damage to the environment. Given these very different properties, it's vital that the industry has a detailed understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of IO, which this book sets out to do from a multidisciplinary point of view. It analyses Integrated Operations from the angles of statistics, management science, human factors and resilience engineering. These varied disciplines provide a multifaceted understanding of IO that better informs risk assessment practices, as well as explaining new techniques and methods and provides state-of-the-art guidance to risk assessment practitioners working in the oil and gas industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first textbook to address quantified risk assessment (QRA) as specifically applied to offshore installations and operations. As the second part of the two-volume updated and expanded fourth edition, it adds a new focus on the recent development of Normally Unattended Installations (NUIs), which are essentially autonomous installations that combine digitalization, big data, drones and machine learning, and can be supported by W2W (walk-to-work) vessels. These minimalistic installations with no helideck and very limited safety systems will require a new approach to risk assessment and emergency planning, especially during manned periods involving W2W vessels. Separate chapters analyse the main hazards for offshore structures: fire, explosion, collision, and falling objects, as well as structural and marine hazards. The book explores possible simplifications of risk assessment for traditional manned installations. Risk mitigation and control are also discussed, as well as how the results of quantitative risk assessment studies should be presented. In closing, the book provides an updated approach to environmental risk assessment. The book offers a comprehensive reference guide for academics and students of marine/offshore risk assessment and management. It will also be of interest to professionals in the industry, as well as contractors, suppliers, consultants and regulatory authorities.

Book excerpt: The ability of sports federations to self-regulate is a profession of faith in the governance of global sports, even as a defense measure against attempts at political appropriation of the virtues of sports ideas, especially by autocratic or totalitarian regimes, as seen, for example, in "Nazification" of the aesthetics of the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936, or the use of sport as a piece of propaganda during the Cold War, in the second half of the 20th century. However, the possible hypocrisy of the discourse of an alleged purity of ideals defended by sporting autonomy has been exposed by successive episodes of abuse and corruption by sector leaders, at the most diverse levels, generating government reactions in order to issue norms that allow a greater degree of state intervention in sport. Given this situation, the work proposes governance standards that can preserve sports self-regulation, especially from the point of view of democratization of national and international federations and in light of the regulatory innovations issued by FIFA and the International Olympic Committee, in reaction to the episodes that undermine the credibility of global sports governance.

Book excerpt: This book proposes a new approach to dynamic and online risk assessment of automated and autonomous marine systems, taking into account different environmental and operational conditions. The book presents lessons learnt from dynamic positioning incidents and accidents, and discusses the challenges of risk assessment of complex systems. The book begins by introducing dynamic and online risk assessment, before presenting automated and autonomous marine systems, as well as numerous dynamic positioning incidents. It then discusses human interactions with technology and explores how to quantify human error. Dynamic probabilistic risk assessment and online risk assessment are both considered fully, including case studies with the application of assisting operators in decision making in emergency situations. Finally, areas for future research are suggested. This practical volume offers tools and methodologies to help operators make better decisions and improve the safety of automated and autonomous marine systems. It provides a guideline for researchers and practitioners to perform dynamic probabilistic and online risk assessment, which also should be applicable to other complex systems outside the marine and maritime domain, such as nuclear power plants, chemical processes, autonomous transport systems, and space shuttles.
