Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Performance of Beethoven's Symphonies The secret of the artistic rendering of musical compositions, and hence the secret of the conductor's art, lies in the style. The reproducing artist, in this case the conductor, must have absorbed into himself, so to speak, the peculiarity of each master and each masterpiece, and his rendering must be subordinate to this peculiarity even in the smallest details. As regards the time, the phrasing, the treatment of the sounds in the orchestra and even the technical manipulation, the conductor must assume a different personality according as he is conducting the Eroica or the Pastorale, Tristan or the Meistersinger, according as he is trying to reproduce Haydn or Beethoven, Berlioz or Wagner. I believe I am not going too far when I say that a conductor of genius unites in himself just as many personalities as he reproduces masterpieces. One of the essential conditions of the style of an execution must be clearness, and this is the quality which will occupy us here with regard to Beethoven's Symphonies. This, is precisely the point in which these greatest of all orchestral compositions offer the greatest difficulty, for even a perfectly correct rendering does not always make the intentions of the master as clear as they become by the reading of the score, or even by the playing of the pianoforte extracts. Indeed it must be confessed that many passages awaken a feeling of confusion rather than of pleasure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...from the similar passage in bar 17 of page 10. I have therefore added the following parts for the horn starting from the bar in question. p cresc. ff This is not absolutely necessary, but it seems rather strange to hear this passage which is raised a tone (ismajor in contradistinction to the preceding D major) without the ring of the horns, and to be forced to say that doubtless it was only a technical hindrance which caused this omission. The artistic conscience of the conductor must be the guide as to whether my suggestion should be adopted or not. Page 14, bars 9--16. For a careful performance I propose the following notation for violas and violins: VC Page 15, bars 4 and 5. The second horn plays the lower D. Page 16, bars 2 and 4. The trill should be taken without grace-note to the second crotchet of the last bar; it stops there, so that this crotchet is played simply, without shake. Page 16, bars 17--19. Second violins and violas come in here as a repeating continuation of the clarinets and bassoons. The following notation is therefore a suitable one: Page 19, bar 12. See page 6, bar 23. Page 22, bars 11 and following. The whole passage would be robbed of its character if it were to be hurried. The first time, taken in an easy manner, should be the standard to the end of the movement. Page 26. The second violins, the violas and the two muted violoncellos are apt to sound too loud in all the passages where they have figurations. The conductor should see that these instruments only form a background which brings into relief the tender light-pictures of the melodic parts. Great care must be taken not to let the time drag. The metronome-mark J = 50 is all that can be desired. Page 27, last bar but one. In order to allow the gently...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[Beethoven’s] music never grows old— and, enjoyed alongside Mr. Lockwood’s expert commentary, it sparkles with fresh magic.”—Wall Street Journal More than any other composer, Beethoven left to posterity a vast body of material that documents the early stages of almost everything he wrote. From this trove of sketchbooks, Lewis Lockwood draws us into the composer’s mind, unveiling a creative process of astonishing scope and originality. For musicians and nonmusicians alike, Beethoven’s symphonies stand at the summit of artistic achievement, loved today as they were two hundred years ago for their emotional cogency, variety, and unprecedented individuality. Beethoven labored to complete nine of them over his lifetime—a quarter of Mozart’s output and a tenth of Haydn’s—yet no musical works are more iconic, more indelibly stamped on the memory of anyone who has heard them. They are the products of an imagination that drove the composer to build out of the highest musical traditions of the past something startlingly new. Lockwood brings to bear a long career of studying the surviving sources that yield insight into Beethoven’s creative work, including concept sketches for symphonies that were never finished. From these, Lockwood offers fascinating revelations into the historical and biographical circumstances in which the symphonies were composed. In this compelling story of Beethoven’s singular ambition, Lockwood introduces readers to the symphonies as individual artworks, broadly tracing their genesis against the backdrop of political upheavals, concert life, and their relationship to his major works in other genres. From the first symphonies, written during his emerging deafness, to the monumental Ninth, Lockwood brings to life Beethoven’s lifelong passion to compose works of unsurpassed beauty.

In Beethoven's hands, the symphony expanded dramatically in scope and power in a way that would revolutionise both the form itself and music in general. The impact of Beethoven's nine was such that composers long after him would write their own symphonies in his shadow. In this book, acclaimed Pianist and critic John Bell Young explores each of the nine symphonies, always looking beneath the surface for what makes the music so compelling. He places them in their historical and cultural context, and he describes how the Russian concept of intonatsiia, a way of perceiving relationships "between the notes," can help deepen our appreciation of these pieces. The accompanying CD contains selections from all of the symphonies, each performance conducted by the legendary Wilhelm Furtwangler.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, a masterpiece that has influenced virtually every Western composer since its premiere, has become associated with the marking of momentous public occasions. In 1989, Chinese students played its finale through loudspeakers in Tiananmen Square, and Leonard Bernstein led a performance in Berlin to celebrate the razing of the Berlin Wall. This lively and up-to-date book focuses on Beethoven's Ninth, exploring the cultural and musical meanings that surround this powerful work of genius. David B. Levy sets the scene with a brief survey of nineteenth-century Germanic culture and society, then analyzes the Ninth symphony in detail with special emphasis on the famous choral finale. He discusses the initial performances in 1824 under Beethoven's direction and traces the symphony's critical reception and legacy. In the final chapter of the book, Levy examines interpretations of the work by prominent conductors, including Wagner, Mahler, and Weingartner. A fully annotated discography of selected recordings completes this comprehensive volume.
