Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as the circle number π or the Euler constant e determines mathematics, fundamental constants of nature define the scales of the natural sciences. This book presents a new perspective by means of a few axioms and compares the resulting validity with experimental data. By the axiomatic approach Sommerfeld's mysterious fine-structure constant and Dirac's cosmic number are fixed as pure number constants. Thanks to these number constants, it is possible to calculate the value for the anomalous magnetic-moment of the electron in a simple way compared to QED calculations. With the same number constants it is also possible to calculate masses, partial lifetimes, magnetic-moments or charge radii of fundamental particles. The expressions used for the calculations, with few exceptions, yield values within the experimental error limits of the Particle Data Group. The author shows that the introduced number constants give even better predictions than the complicated QED calculations of today's doctrine. In the first part only experimental data from the literature for checking the postulates are used. In the second part the author explains electrical transport measurements with emergent behaviour, which were carried out in a professional environment.

Book excerpt: Reality as we know it is bound by a set of constants—numbers and values that dictate the strengths of forces like gravity, the speed of light, and the masses of elementary particles. In The Constants of Nature, Cambridge Professor and bestselling author John D.Barrow takes us on an exploration of these governing principles. Drawing on physicists such as Einstein and Planck, Barrow illustrates with stunning clarity our dependence on the steadfastness of these principles. But he also suggests that the basic forces may have been radically different during the universe’s infancy, and suggests that they may continue a deeply hidden evolution. Perhaps most tantalizingly, Barrow theorizes about the realities that might one day be found in a universe with different parameters than our own.

For the mole, the SI unit of the amount of substance, the Avogadro constant was redefined and its value was set as the defining constant. But: How did it come about that a comparative number became a natural constant? Embark on a short journey from the beginnings to the present day: From the gas laws of the 17th century to the new SI system of units of the 21st century. Get to know the meaning of the natural constants in general and the Avogadro constant in particular. Get an overview of the term “mole” and find out which (exemplary) methods can be used to determine the Avogadro constant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to one of the important areas of theoretical and experimental physics—the calculation of the accuracy of measurements of fundamental physical constants. To achieve this goal, numerous methods and criteria have been proposed. However, all of them are focused on identifying a posteriori uncertainty caused by the idealization of the model and its subsequent computerization in comparison with the physical system. This book focuses on formulating an a priori interaction between the level of a detailed description of a material object (the number of registered quantities) and the lowest uncertainty in measuring a physical constant. It contains the materials necessary for the optimal design of models describing a physical phenomenon. It will appeal to scientists and engineers, as well as university students.

Book excerpt: A major contribution to our understanding of the basic laws of the universe -- from the author of The Book of Nothing. The constants of nature are the fundamental laws of physics that apply throughout the universe: gravity, velocity of light, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. They encode the deepest secrets of the universe, and express at once our greatest knowledge and our greatest ignorance about the cosmos. Their existence has taught us the profound truth that nature abounds with unseen regularities. Yet while we have become skilled at measuring the values of these constants, our frustrating inability to explain or predict their values shows how much we have still to learn about inner workings of the universe. What is the ultimate status of these constants of nature? Are they truly constant? And are there other universes where they are different? John D. Barrow, one of our foremost mathematicians and cosmologists, discusses the latest thinking about these and many more dramatic issues in this accessible and thought-provoking book. From the laboratory to the depths of space, it explores the paths of gravitation, general relativity and new theories such as that of superstrings. Coverage investigates the solidity of the foundations of physics and discusses the implications of the discovery of the non-constancy of a constant. The book even goes beyond the subject of constants to explain and discuss many ideas in physics, encountering along the way, for example, such exciting details as the discovery of a natural nuclear reactor at Oklo in Gabon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental laws of physics include fixed numerical parameters called "universal constants". These quantities, determined experimentally and supposed to vary neither in time nor in space, remain one of the greatest mysteries of science. Our current knowledge does not allow us to understand their origin nor to determine them in a theoretical way. In this book, the author is mainly interested in these elements. His approach is to build a theoretical framework that could explain the source of these constants in our laws of physics and to propose a method that would not only predict them all but also define them. To do this, the author begins by introducing the assumptions on which he bases his theory. Then, in a first part, he expresses the universal constants, the Planck units and the thermodynamic quantities of the Universe in terms of its characteristic variables, such as its mass and its radius. In a second part, he demonstrates the constancy of the Planck units as well as that of the universal constants and, finally, he proposes a general theoretical framework to determine them.

Book excerpt: Revolutionary new discoveries reveal the actual location where (according to coded information embedded in the poet's church) the great Bard himself has left physical evidence that promises to finally end the persistent controversy concerning his identity. What is hidden at Stratford could well be the greatest story Shakespeare ever wrote! Unlike anything you've ever read about him, 'Dee-Coding Shakespeare' is an exquisite cryptographic maze and includes over 20 gorgeous, full-page photographs of Holy Trinity Church, Stratford. The reader is taken on a breath-taking journey of discovery and invited to be part of history by solving the mystery themselves. Forty puzzles take just a couple of minutes each to work out and result in a stunning conclusion that will shake the halls of academia and bring new life to our appreciation of the most enduring literary genius the world has ever known. The Bard will never be the same ... to-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mission is handicapped without a sound biblical theology of mission and an understanding of the history of mission leading up to our current context. Constants in Context offers both of these elements. It is mission theology in historical perspective and/or a history of mission that is grounded theologically. The authors describe it as a systematic theology with mission at its core, and a church history shaped by the constant but always contextual Christian traditions. Furthermore it is a constructive contribution to how mission theology needs to be practical and lived out through today's church and in our world. Written collaboratively by Roman Catholic writers Stephen Bevans and Roger Schroeder, both Missionaries of the Divine Word (SVDs). It is a particularly insightful in regard to the history and the various streams of Catholic mission but it also addresses and learns from the other traditions of the church. In fact, one of the book's strengths is its attention to neglected aspects and hidden stories of church and mission history. As a result it is gratifying to be inspired by non-European mission, women in mission and various forgotten or often ignored branches of the church. The book is in three sections: first, there is a framework for cultural contexts and theological constants; second, an in-depth exploration of historical stages and different models for mission; and third, a presentation of theological frameworks for mission. The third section concludes with a case for 'mission as prophetic dialogue' being the most appropriate model for 21st century mission." -- Amazon.com.
