This book was released on 1998 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a comparative ecological look at the distribution and environmental relationships of various age groups of snow crabs (Chionoecetes opilio, Ch. bairdi, Ch. tanneri, Ch. angulatus and Ch. japonicus), based on material collected 1968-74 during eight expeditions to the Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk and Sea of Japan and on 20 research expeditions by the TINRO Commercial Invertebrates Laboratory, supplemented by information from published sources. Information is included on water temperature range, optimal temperatures, depths of occurrence, geographic range, and reproductive biology. The concluding section discusses the individuation of the Chionoecetes species and their migration to depths.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Bering Sea, snow crabs (Chionoecetes opilio) are both an important commercial shellfish and a dominant benthic predator. However, few data exist for snow crabs in the area between the troubled commercial fishery in the southeast Bering Sea and the Chukchi Sea. I collected extensive data on the abundance and distributions of snow crabs of varying life stages between St. Matthew Island and Bering Strait (60-66° N). I found that snow crabs were extremely abundant in that region despite bottom-water temperatures that cause negative energy balance for much or all of the year. This dissertation focuses on the following questions: (1) by what demographic mechanisms do very cold temperatures limit the local productivity of snow crabs, (2) what oceanographic and demographic mechanisms can sustain their populations in cold areas, (3) could populations in cold areas contribute to production of harvestable crabs at larger scales, (4) to what extent do diets of snow crabs of different sexes and sizes correlate to abundance and biomass of available prey over this large region, and (5) how effective are stomach content, fatty acid, and stable isotope analyses in indicating the diets of snow crabs in this area?
Book Synopsis The 2005 Eastern Bering Sea Sea Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio Tagging Study by : Kirsten A. Gravel
Download or read book The 2005 Eastern Bering Sea Sea Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio Tagging Study written by Kirsten A. Gravel and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tagging project for snow crab Chionoecetes opilio was conducted in two distinct areas of the eastern Bering Sea in July and August 2005 aboard the FV "Bella K". The southern area, comprised of 42 stations northwest of the Pribilof Islands, encompassed the sector between 58°00' - 59°20' N latitude and 170°20' - 173°43' W longitude. The northern area, comprised of 8 stations northwest of St. Matthew Island, encompassed the sector between 60°40' - 61°20' N latitude and 174°49'- 175°41' W longitude. A total of 50 stations and 450 pots were fished, resulting in a total catch of 55,150 male snow crabs. A total of 8,436 large, legal male snow crabs were tagged.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first paper to present data characterizing the composition of commercial populations of snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk and western Bering Sea with the use of a new paradigm, the existence of a terminal moult in male crabs, the concept of morphometric maturity. The effect of the terminal moult on the size/age composition of snow crab populations is discussed, and a new interpretation of certain data believed to contradict this paradigm is proposed.
