Book excerpt: A breath-taking story about love and courage... [and] finding an inner compass that leads through chaos, destruction, and violence. With each sentence, one learns to be more historically aware, tolerant, courageous and loving. Botakoz Kassymbekova, historian and author of Despite Cultures Hamour Baika tells a necessary story... It’s necessary because it’s told with such urgency, beauty, and sensitivity. Baika layers in a hidden—and forbidden—history of gay men, giving those men a voice. John Copenhaver, award-winning author of Dodging and Burning On the Enemy's Side features well-developed characters, setting, and story-line... This novel is literary in tone and is reminiscent of the short story, "The Guest," by Albert Camus. While Hesam and Bahram are at the center of the novel, the themes of identity, honor, and morality in the face of oppressive systems repeats with each character. Angelic Rodgers, originally published on Reedsy Discovery Synopsis: In 1980, as the world is captivated by the Iranian hostage crisis, aspiring doctor Hesam drops out of medical school in Rome and returns to Iran to serve his country. A member of the Revolutionary Guards Corps, he becomes a prison guard in Ahwaz, assigned to investigate and interrogate political prisoners. The more he learns about ethnic and religious tensions, however, the more he finds the concept of revolutionary justice questionable. Hesam finds solace in speaking with a defiant young prisoner with whom he develops a passionate bond. But when Hesam discovers damning evidence about the detainee, he has to choose between his political ideals and his conscience in a country where same-sex love is violently condemned. On the Enemy’s Side is contemporary historical fiction, inspired by real events during a tumultuous period preceding the Iran Iraq war. Baika has crafted a memorable cast of characters of divergent and conflicting political allegiances, all who struggle to do the right thing in a morally complicated world. Astutely crafted, meticulously researched, and emotionally engaging, On the Enemy’s Side is a haunting modern classic about love during a civil war.

Book excerpt: "An unnamed American city feeling the effects of a war waged far away and suffering from bad weather is the backdrop for this startling work of fiction. The protagonists are aimless young men going from one blue collar job to the next, or in a few cases, aspiring to middle management. Their everyday struggles--with women, with the morning commute, with a series of cruel bosses--are somehow transformed into storytelling that is both universally resonant and wonderfully uncanny. That is the unsettling, funny, and ultimately heartfelt originality of Saïd Sayrafiezadeh's short fiction, to be at home in a world not quite our own but with many, many lessons to offer us"--

Book excerpt: For 16-year-old Jan Kamienski, life as he knows it ends when Germany invades Poland on September 1, 1939. After a great deal of hardship, he joins the Polish Resistance and eventually, in 1941, is sent to Dresden, Germany, to take up Underground activities there. Armed with false papers, he works at various jobs, maintains a clandestine stopover for Allied couriers, produces Polish-language news bulletins for Poles housed in forced-labour camps, and does everything he can within the heartland of the Third Reich to sabotage the Nazis’ war effort. Among Kamienksi’s many horrific experiences is his survival during the terrible firebombing of Dresden in February 1945. After the war, the author becomes a translator in East Germany for the Russian occupiers, studies at the art academy in Dresden, and eventually finds work as an artist. In 1948, after marrying a German woman, he escapes the Soviet zone, is brutally interrogated in a Polish

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did a "doctrine race" exist alongside the much-publicized arms competition between East and West? Using recent insights from organization theory, Kimberly Marten Zisk answers this question in the affirmative. Zisk challenges the standard portrayal of Soviet military officers as bureaucratic actors wedded to the status quo: she maintains that when they were confronted by a changing external security environment, they reacted by producing innovative doctrine. The author's extensive evidence is drawn from newly declassified Soviet military journals, and from her interviews with retired high-ranking Soviet General Staff officers and highly placed Soviet-Russian civilian defense experts. According to Zisk, the Cold War in Europe was powerfully influenced by the reactions of Soviet military officers and civilian defense experts to modifications in U.S. and NATO military doctrine. Zisk also asserts that, contrary to the expectations of many analysts, civilian intervention in military policy-making need not provoke pitched civil-military conflict. Under Gorbachev's leadership, for instance, great efforts were made to ensure that "defensive defense" policies reflected military officers' input and expertise. Engaging the Enemy makes an important contribution not only to the theory of military organizations and the history of Soviet military policy but also to current policy debates on East-West security issues. Kimberly Marten Zisk is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Faculty Associate of the Mershon Center at the Ohio State University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most believers know that the Bible says ..". for we wrestle not against flesh and blood..." But, if we say that "we know this," then why are there so many believers, made of flesh and blood, blaming, resenting and fighting one another? Maybe it's because we are not realizing enough that those negative " thoughts and feelings" do not come "just from us..".but from living beings that are unseen. We are not realizing enough that unholy thoughts, feelings, desires and reasons did not originate "from us" or from what is said to be "our sinful nature..".just as holiness does not originate "from us." If our holi-ness comes from the HolySpirit, would our un-holiness not also come from un-holyspirits? I submit that we do not understand enough " the sin that dwells in the flesh." It is alive, and does what we do not want to do... unless we recognize the real, spiritualenemies behind "the flesh." Miguel Demelli is a Spirit-filled believer who also embraces the Hebraic roots of the Messiah and the Whole House of Israel (Ezekie 37:15-28). He's been searching for the "keys to victory" for 15 years. And just when he thought he was defeated forever, these simple truths were clarified to him and transformed his walk...forever. His desire is to see true unity and victory in the Body. But, as he found out for himself, this cannot happen as long as there is so much hidden, unrecognized enemy activity in and through us operating against ourselves and then against one another, resulting in much strife and even diseases. He presently splits his time as a translator in his local congregation, as Spanish Outreach Coordinator/Translator for the Messianic Israel Alliance in the US and Mexico, as an associate with wholeness ministries and with other personal ministry and translation opportunities. He currently resides in Orlando, Florida. Cover Illustration by Rosemary Burke (c) 2009
