Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Education of the People of India The subject was however regarded at that time in India with so much apathy, that no measures were adopted to fulfil the intentions of the British legislature till 1823. On the 17th of July in that year the governor general in council resolved, that there should be constituted a gene ral committee of public instruction for the purpose of ascertaining the state of public education, and of the public institutions designed for its promotion, and of considering, and from time to time sub mitting to government, the suggestion of such measures as it may appear expedient to adopt with a view to the better instruction of the people, to the introduction among them of useful knowledge, and to the improvement of their moral character. Mr. Eliot was actuated by motives Of broadest Christianity and pur est philanthropy. His simple measures were chosen with consummate wisdom. In the first place he familiarized himself with the language, disposition and character of his Indians. Then, by according them the same, he secured their confidence and respect and stimulated in their hearts reverence and a sincere desire for the industry and thrift, the godliness and purity Of life, of which New England communities afforded the example. Those who would follow him he gathered in towns, where he taught them the liberties and responsibilities of township government and the devices and institutions of civilized life, among which the church and the school naturally occupied places Of honor. A num ber Of choice Indian youths he induced to attend English schools that they might prepare themselves for missionary work as teachers and catechists among their own people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Indian Education: An Inquiry Into Its Origin, Development, and Ideals In attempting to write about the ancient education of India, one of the greatest difficulties has been to ascertain all the available material. The literature of India is very bulky, and only a small portion of it has been translated into English. References in it to education are not always numerous, and are scattered here and there amongst a vast amount of other material. I am well aware, therefore, that there may be more material available than I have yet been able to discover. The present attempt must be looked upon largely as a pioneer effort, but I hope that it may stimulate others also who are interested in Indian education to take up the work of research. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Aspects of Indian Education Your President said something about not being afraid. Every man should be afraid; but there 15 only one thing to be afraid of - the only thing in the world that can hurt him - himself. There is no civilization, no Government, that can make a man a liar or a thief. There is but one power to do that - his own - and therefore that is the only thing he need fear. Because 'i believe truth should appeal to all, and this special truth doubly to Catholic Americans, I think it well to speak to you on one of the most im portant problems in the United States, one in which every man and every part or the United States are concerned. I imagine, and have for years imagined, that one of the ancient fables -was something more than a fairy tale - the fable of Procrustes - the fabulous giant with his patent bed, the giant who went out upon the highway and way laid all who passed and compelled them to partake of his hospitality and who insisted that they must fit his bed. If they were too long he would chop off their legs; if too short, he would rack them. And I think, gentlemen, we know that giant, although Theseus thought he killed him 2500 years ago. Who can he be, but that smiling bully, Philanthropy? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schools With a Message in India It is not supposed that these schools will present entirely new types to a modern educationist. For him their interest will lie in the way certain familiar principles and methods have been embodied amid conditions very different from those that obtain in the West. Some of these schools, however, reveal a degree of socialization that will surprise readers unfamiliar with the solidarity of community life in the Orient; In the individualistic \v est greater effort is required than in the East to obtain a thoroughly socialized school life. For the general reader and person preparing for work in India, the description of these schools may also widen the conception of the challenging range and magnitude of the educational problems and opportunities in an Oriental land. For those actually at work in India, where the means for the interchange of educational experience is as yet inadequate, it is hoped that a perusal of these outstanding educational experiments may prove helpful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions for a Plan of Civic Education in the Secondary Schools of India: Thesis This is the first time in the history of India that the people have ever been given responsibility in governing their own country. Representative form of government was almost unknown in India. From immemorial this country has been ruled by autocratic and irresponsible monarchs. It is true that before the advent of the English, each village was independent, self-sufficient, autonomous and had very little to do with the central government. The village community, was, until recently, a self-contained, self-sufficient, economic unit. Practically all of its economic needs, the need for clothing, £00d and shelter, were met from.within its boundaries. There was very little exchange between it and the outside world. A little salt, some brassware and silver were nearly all that was obtained from.outside, and the exports were no bigger than the imports. Each village was a little world in itself, a world more or less self-contained.2 The central government controlled by an.absolute monarch did not bother with the village as long as it sent the yearly revenues regularly. So the people in the village knew how to rule themselves, and settle their own fights and quarrels. In other words these pe0p1e knew the art of We Indian Year Book, 1931 p. 968. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of National Education There can be no doubt that the Educational System of Europe is a great advance on the many methods of antiquity, but its defects are also palpable. It is based on an in sufficient knowledge of human psycho logy and it is only safeguarded in Europe from disastrous results by the refusal of the ordinary student to subject himself to the processes it involves, his habit of studying only so much as he must to avoid punishment or to pass an immediate test, his resort to active habits and vigorous physical exercise. In India the disas trous effects of the system on body, mind and character are only too appa rent. The first problem in a National System of Education is to give an Education as comprehensive as the European and more thorough, with out the evils of strain and cramming. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the People, a Practical Treatise on the Means of Extending Its Sphere Improving Its Character: With a Preliminary Dissertation on Some Points Connected With the Present Position of Education in This Country The first edition of the following Treatise was published in 1843; the second has recently reached this country. M. Willm, in a preliminary note, gives the following account of its success. "The work, under its first form, has obtained a success which the Author did not venture to hope for; it was distinguished by the French Academy as 'a useful work of the first order, ' in 1843; and, in a deliberation of 16th January 1844, the Royal Council of Public Instruction declared it worthy of being lodged in all the libraries of Primary Normal Schools, and of Superior Primary Schools. This double honour lays on the Author the duty of a lively gratitude, especially towards the illustrious perpetual Secretary of the Academy, (M. Villemain, ) who gave so kind an account of his Essay: at the same time, the high approbation it has received from the University Authorities, has induced him to reproduce it almost exactly as it was at first.
