Book excerpt: This self-help manual is what is used to help parents gain skills and understanding to help manage their child's eating disorder. It is the basis of the parent support and skills program from the Duke Center for Eating Disorders. This manual is intended to accomplish four basic goals. First, it gives parents tools to manage moment-to-moment difficulties that arise when they are trying to nourish a child with disordered eating. Second, it gives parents strategies to prevent burn-out and increase their social support. Third, it helps parents figure out how disordered eating symptoms may be helping their child to manage difficult situations and feelings. In turn, parents can then provide their children with healthy strategies that can replace these disordered eating symptoms and help their children to flourish. Finally, it helps parents to be role models of responsive self-parenting, something that their children are not very good at (and that we all could use some help with!). The program covers all sorts of topics: perfectionism, emotion awareness, family communication - fun stuff! While this may all sound challenging, my intention is that this manual presents skills in ways that seem very manageable: straight-forward, hopeful, and a little corny. I hope you find it useful and wish the best for you and your family. -Nancy Zucker, Director of the Duke Center for Eating Disorders

Book excerpt: After-dinner speeches, toasts and roasts, product announcements, job interviews, eulogies, new business pitches, media interviews, arguments...virtually everything we say every day is "off the cuff." Yet how many of us are confident when asked, as we so often are, to just "say a few words"? An estimated 99 percent of what we say is impromptu, which is defined as without preparation or advance thought. Off the Cuff offers that preparation in an easy-to-read, easy-to-reference guide for putting words together to motivate, direct, entertain, and succeed. It will help you learn both basic and advanced skills in solving communication challenges that range from apologies and meetings to introductions and eulogies. Except for those rare moments when we have given a scripted speech, we've been speaking off the cuff our whole lives. Now it's time to learn how to do it easily, effectively, and fearlessly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bishop John McCarthy's book, "Off the Cuff & Over the Collar: Common Sense Catholicism" is an enticing concoction of "Tuesdays with Morrie" blended with "Catholicism 101," topped with an added twist of Irish wit and decades of experience as a Roman Catholic priest. In over fifty bite-sized pieces, McCarthy clearly defines the Church's position and as always, openly voices his opinions- including where they begin to diverge from recent years' public stance of the Vatican. He addresses a variety of topics such as the infallibility of the Pope, abortion, divorce, saints, sacraments, bullying and teasing, nuns, Jews and Protestants. McCarthy tackles the shortage of priests, celibacy, homosexuality, birth control, the role of women in the Church, death and dying, and even heaven and hell, skillfully balancing the serious nature of these issues with his relaxed conversational tone and humor. Bishop John McCarthy speaks from the depth of his heart and faith, reaching out not only to currently practicing Catholics, but also to the millions of fallen away Catholics- the hurt, the disenfranchised, the indifferent, the divorced, the homosexual, the questioning agnostic, the liberals and the conservatives- even the self-professed "recovered Catholics." McCarthy fully embraces the wonderful Apostolic Church that was envisioned in Vatican II, and stands ready to ""throw open those magnificent doors to the heart of the Catholic Church, and invite you in with love and joy."" Bishop McCarthy is buoyantly optimistic that the Church- though she moves slowly and deliberately- is ready for change, especially under the leadership of the Pope Francis, to whom this book is dedicated. The new pope's immediate focus on simplification and service suggest indeed, a very common sense Catholicism. All profits from this book will benefit one of Bishop McCarthy's favorite charities: Saint Louise House... "empowering women with children to overcome homelessness." Sister Sharon Groetsch, D.C., says: "Bishop McCarthy's book is a wonderful response to a pressing need for ordinary Catholics (and the "Catholic-curious") to bring simple, direct insights to the lay-public. Moreover, it's fun The Bishop's style is conversational, clear, and well-laced with Irish humor. This is a quick and easy read, and a perfect pairing with your morning coffee." Rabbi Alan R. Freedman, Temple Beth Shalom, says: "In an age when religion is increasingly coming under attack, John McCarthy has come forth with a book that is a resounding treatise on the virtues of a life of faith . While addressed to a primarily Catholic audience, Bishop McCarthy provides observations and lessons on life that apply to all people of faith. His lifelong concern for all people is reflected in every page, "particularly in his consistent admonition to avoid bringing pain to others." There is a life lesson on every page of this book, and I encourage anyone seeking to live a better and more meaningful life to share in its words. The good Bishop has done it again " Rev. Larry Covington, Pastor of St. Louis Catholic Church, says: "Required reading for all current and former Catholics, and especially for seminarians and anyone engaged in the ministry Here lies no pontification of a prelate long ensconced in a purple silk bureaucracy, but practical words for the common Joe. McCarthy's common sense observations reflect his life as a provocative and sometimes controversial church leader who is, above all, a man who takes the task of being a good shepherd to heart."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treat your own rotator cuff? Who needs to worry about that? According to the medical research, a lot of people. The rotator cuff, a group of four, flat tendons that connect to the critical muscles that stabilize your shoulder, can cause a lot more problems than you might think. Consider a few of these statistics from the published literature: .It's simply just a matter of time until the majority of shoulders get a rotator cuff tear. According to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, approximately 4% of people under forty years of age have a torn rotator cuff. After age sixty, however, 54% of people have one (Sher 1995). .Once the rotator cuff gets torn, it doesn't look good either. One study followed a group of patients with tears in their rotator cuffs and found that 80% of the them went on to either enlarge or turn into full thickness tears-in less than a two-year period (Yamanaka 1994). As you can tell, rotator cuff problems aren't just for elite athletes. Seriously consider investing just a few minutes a week doing the simple exercises in this book if you: .have been diagnosed with either a partial or full thickness rotator cuff tear (yes, many studies show that even full thickness tears can be helped with exercise ) .experience shoulder pain .do upper body weight lifting .have a job or play a sport where you do a lot of work with your arms above shoulder level .have been diagnosed with "impingement syndrome" .want a healthy and properly functioning rotator cuff So whether you already suffer from a rotator cuff problem, or simply want to prevent one, Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff will guide you step-by-step through an evidence-based program that can iron-plate your shoulders in just minutes a week. Jim Johnson, P.T., is a physical therapist who has spent over fifteen years treating both inpatients and outpatients with a wide range of pain and mobility problems. He has written many books based completely on published research and controlled trials including The Multifidus Back Pain Solution, Treat Your Own Knees, The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan: A Pocket Guide to What Works, and The Sixty-Second Motivator. Within just a century, our relationship with our surroundings has transformed from one of exploration to one of disassociation. In This Book Was a Tree, science teacher Marcie Cuff issues a call for a new era of pioneers—not leathery, backwoods deerskin-wearing salt pork and hominy pioneers, but strong-minded, clever, crafty, mudpie-making, fort-building individuals committed to examining the natural world and deciphering nature’s perplexing puzzles. Within each chapter, readers will discover a principle for reconnecting with the natural world around them, from learning to be still to discovering the importance of giving back. With a mix of science and hands-on crafts and activities, readers will be encouraged to brainstorm, imagine, and understand the world as inventive scientists—to touch, collect, document, sketch, decode, analyze, experiment, unravel, interpret, compare, and reflect.

That, or Lyssa needs to have better taste in men...and stay faraway from those with wandering eyes. Drunk as a wolf, she stumbles to her best friend's house to sleep off her whiskey-induced haze, and wakes to...cuffs? Caleb sees his chance and finally seizes it. His buddies on the force have ribbed him but good for buying silver-plated handcuffs. But Caleb had a perfectly logical reason for purchasing them; he had something important to tell Lyssa, and being that she could put a serious hurtin' on him, he wasn't going to take any chances. So, with a bound werewolf, the woman he's yearned for since they were teens, in his bed, will Caleb find the courage to tell Lyssa that she is his?
