Book Synopsis Modern Real Analysis by : William P. Ziemer
Download or read book Modern Real Analysis written by William P. Ziemer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first year graduate text is a comprehensive resource in real analysis based on a modern treatment of measure and integration. Presented in a definitive and self-contained manner, it features a natural progression of concepts from simple to difficult. Several innovative topics are featured, including differentiation of measures, elements of Functional Analysis, the Riesz Representation Theorem, Schwartz distributions, the area formula, Sobolev functions and applications to harmonic functions. Together, the selection of topics forms a sound foundation in real analysis that is particularly suited to students going on to further study in partial differential equations. This second edition of Modern Real Analysis contains many substantial improvements, including the addition of problems for practicing techniques, and an entirely new section devoted to the relationship between Lebesgue and improper integrals. Aimed at graduate students with an understanding of advanced calculus, the text will also appeal to more experienced mathematicians as a useful reference.
Book Synopsis Discrete Groups, Expanding Graphs and Invariant Measures by : Alex Lubotzky
Download or read book Discrete Groups, Expanding Graphs and Invariant Measures written by Alex Lubotzky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-02-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ?fteen years two seemingly unrelated problems, one in computer science and the other in measure theory, were solved by amazingly similar techniques from representation theory and from analytic number theory. One problem is the - plicit construction of expanding graphs («expanders»). These are highly connected sparse graphs whose existence can be easily demonstrated but whose explicit c- struction turns out to be a dif?cult task. Since expanders serve as basic building blocks for various distributed networks, an explicit construction is highly des- able. The other problem is one posed by Ruziewicz about seventy years ago and studied by Banach [Ba]. It asks whether the Lebesgue measure is the only ?nitely additive measure of total measure one, de?ned on the Lebesgue subsets of the n-dimensional sphere and invariant under all rotations. The two problems seem, at ?rst glance, totally unrelated. It is therefore so- what surprising that both problems were solved using similar methods: initially, Kazhdan’s property (T) from representation theory of semi-simple Lie groups was applied in both cases to achieve partial results, and later on, both problems were solved using the (proved) Ramanujan conjecture from the theory of automorphic forms. The fact that representation theory and automorphic forms have anything to do with these problems is a surprise and a hint as well that the two questions are strongly related.
Book Synopsis Elementary Theory of L-functions and Eisenstein Series by : Haruzo Hida
Download or read book Elementary Theory of L-functions and Eisenstein Series written by Haruzo Hida and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-02-11 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of p-adic and classic modular forms, and the study of arithmetic and p-adic L-functions has proved to be a fruitful area of mathematics over the last decade. Professor Hida has given courses on these topics in the USA, Japan, and in France, and in this book provides the reader with an elementary but detailed insight into the theory of L-functions. The presentation is self contained and concise, and the subject is approached using only basic tools from complex analysis and cohomology theory. Graduate students wishing to know more about L-functions will find that this book offers a unique introduction to this fascinating branch of mathematics.
Book Synopsis The Radon Transform by : Sigurdur Helgason
Download or read book The Radon Transform written by Sigurdur Helgason and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book has been out of print for some time and I have decided to follow the publisher's kind suggestion to prepare a new edition. Many examples with explicit inversion formulas and range theo rems have been added, and the group-theoretic viewpoint emphasized. For example, the integral geometric viewpoint of the Poisson integral for the disk leads to interesting analogies with the X-ray transform in Euclidean 3-space. To preserve the introductory flavor of the book the short and self-contained Chapter Von Schwartz' distributions has been added. Here §5 provides proofs of the needed results about the Riesz potentials while §§3-4 develop the tools from Fourier analysis following closely the account in Hormander's books (1963] and [1983]. There is some overlap with my books (1984] and [1994b] which however rely heavily on Lie group theory. The present book is much more elementary. I am indebted to Sine Jensen for a critical reading of parts of the manuscript and to Hilgert and Schlichtkrull for concrete contributions men tioned at specific places in the text. Finally I thank Jan Wetzel and Bonnie Friedman for their patient and skillful preparation of the manuscript.

Book Synopsis A Guide to Distribution Theory and Fourier Transforms by : Robert S. Strichartz
Download or read book A Guide to Distribution Theory and Fourier Transforms written by Robert S. Strichartz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book provides a concise exposition of the basic ideas of the theory of distribution and Fourier transforms and its application to partial differential equations. The author clearly presents the ideas, precise statements of theorems, and explanations of ideas behind the proofs. Methods in which techniques are used in applications are illustrated, and many problems are included. The book also introduces several significant recent topics, including pseudodifferential operators, wave front sets, wavelets, and quasicrystals. Background mathematical prerequisites have been kept to a minimum, with only a knowledge of multidimensional calculus and basic complex variables needed to fully understand the concepts in the book.A Guide to Distribution Theory and Fourier Transforms can serve as a textbook for parts of a course on Applied Analysis or Methods of Mathematical Physics, and in fact it is used that way at Cornell.

Book Synopsis Operator Theoretic Aspects of Ergodic Theory by : Tanja Eisner
Download or read book Operator Theoretic Aspects of Ergodic Theory written by Tanja Eisner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stunning recent results by Host–Kra, Green–Tao, and others, highlight the timeliness of this systematic introduction to classical ergodic theory using the tools of operator theory. Assuming no prior exposure to ergodic theory, this book provides a modern foundation for introductory courses on ergodic theory, especially for students or researchers with an interest in functional analysis. While basic analytic notions and results are reviewed in several appendices, more advanced operator theoretic topics are developed in detail, even beyond their immediate connection with ergodic theory. As a consequence, the book is also suitable for advanced or special-topic courses on functional analysis with applications to ergodic theory. Topics include: • an intuitive introduction to ergodic theory • an introduction to the basic notions, constructions, and standard examples of topological dynamical systems • Koopman operators, Banach lattices, lattice and algebra homomorphisms, and the Gelfand–Naimark theorem • measure-preserving dynamical systems • von Neumann’s Mean Ergodic Theorem and Birkhoff’s Pointwise Ergodic Theorem • strongly and weakly mixing systems • an examination of notions of isomorphism for measure-preserving systems • Markov operators, and the related concept of a factor of a measure preserving system • compact groups and semigroups, and a powerful tool in their study, the Jacobs–de Leeuw–Glicksberg decomposition • an introduction to the spectral theory of dynamical systems, the theorems of Furstenberg and Weiss on multiple recurrence, and applications of dynamical systems to combinatorics (theorems of van der Waerden, Gallai, and Hindman, Furstenberg’s Correspondence Principle, theorems of Roth and Furstenberg–Sárközy) Beyond its use in the classroom, Operator Theoretic Aspects of Ergodic Theory can serve as a valuable foundation for doing research at the intersection of ergodic theory and operator theory
Book Synopsis Automatic Autocorrelation and Spectral Analysis by : Piet M. T. Broersen
Download or read book Automatic Autocorrelation and Spectral Analysis written by Piet M. T. Broersen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-20 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectral analysis requires subjective decisions which influence the final estimate and mean that different analysts can obtain different results from the same stationary stochastic observations. Statistical signal processing can overcome this difficulty, producing a unique solution for any set of observations but that is only acceptable if it is close to the best attainable accuracy for most types of stationary data. This book describes a method which fulfils the above near-optimal-solution criterion, taking advantage of greater computing power and robust algorithms to produce enough candidate models to be sure of providing a suitable candidate for given data.

Book Synopsis Finite Difference Methods in Financial Engineering by : Daniel J. Duffy
Download or read book Finite Difference Methods in Financial Engineering written by Daniel J. Duffy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of quantitative finance (QF) is one of the fastest growing areas of research and its practical applications to derivatives pricing problem. Since the discovery of the famous Black-Scholes equation in the 1970's we have seen a surge in the number of models for a wide range of products such as plain and exotic options, interest rate derivatives, real options and many others. Gone are the days when it was possible to price these derivatives analytically. For most problems we must resort to some kind of approximate method. In this book we employ partial differential equations (PDE) to describe a range of one-factor and multi-factor derivatives products such as plain European and American options, multi-asset options, Asian options, interest rate options and real options. PDE techniques allow us to create a framework for modeling complex and interesting derivatives products. Having defined the PDE problem we then approximate it using the Finite Difference Method (FDM). This method has been used for many application areas such as fluid dynamics, heat transfer, semiconductor simulation and astrophysics, to name just a few. In this book we apply the same techniques to pricing real-life derivative products. We use both traditional (or well-known) methods as well as a number of advanced schemes that are making their way into the QF literature: Crank-Nicolson, exponentially fitted and higher-order schemes for one-factor and multi-factor options Early exercise features and approximation using front-fixing, penalty and variational methods Modelling stochastic volatility models using Splitting methods Critique of ADI and Crank-Nicolson schemes; when they work and when they don't work Modelling jumps using Partial Integro Differential Equations (PIDE) Free and moving boundary value problems in QF Included with the book is a CD containing information on how to set up FDM algorithms, how to map these algorithms to C++ as well as several working programs for one-factor and two-factor models. We also provide source code so that you can customize the applications to suit your own needs.
