Book excerpt: Walter Gautschi has written extensively on topics ranging from special functions, quadrature and orthogonal polynomials to difference and differential equations, software implementations, and the history of mathematics. He is world renowned for his pioneering work in numerical analysis and constructive orthogonal polynomials, including a definitive textbook in the former, and a monograph in the latter area. This three-volume set, Walter Gautschi: Selected Works with Commentaries, is a compilation of Gautschi’s most influential papers and includes commentaries by leading experts. The work begins with a detailed biographical section and ends with a section commemorating Walter’s prematurely deceased twin brother. This title will appeal to graduate students and researchers in numerical analysis, as well as to historians of science. Book excerpt: A method, made up of several algorithms, is given for computing the incomplete gamma function ratio, P(a, x) and its complement Q(a, x) for all real arguments a> 0, x> or = 0. The difficult case when a and x are large is treated by a modified version of Takenaga's method. The resulting computer program is efficient, yields both P and Q correctly to within 1 unit in the twelfth significant digit, or, at the user's option, to within one unit in the sixth or third significant digit. A FORTRAN listing of the program is included.

Zahar* The sixty-fifth birthday of Walter Gautschi provided an opportune moment for an international symposium in his honor, to recognize his many contributions to mathematics and computer sciences. Conceived by John Rice and sponsored by Purdue University, the conference took place in West Lafayette from December 2 to 5, 1993, and was organized around the four main themes representing Professor Gautschi's principal research interests: Approximation, Orthogonal Polynomials, Quadrature and Special Functions. Thirty-eight speakers - colleagues, co-authors, research collaborators or doctoral students of Professor Gautschi - were invited to present articles at the conference, their lectures providing an approximately equal representation of the four disciplines. Five invited speakers, Germund Dahlquist, Philip Davis, Luigi Gatteschi, Werner Rheinboldt and Stephan Ruscheweyh, were unable to present their talks because of illness or other commitments, although Professors Dahlquist, Gatteschi and Ruscheweyh subsequently contributed arti cles to these proceedings. Thus, the final program contained thirty-three technical lectures, ten of which were plenary sessions. Approximately eighty scientists attended the conference, and for some ses sions - in particular, Walter's presentation of his entertaining and informative Reflections and Recollections - that number was complemented by many visitors and friends, as well as the family of the honoree. A surprise visit by Paul Erdos provided one of the highlights of the conference week. The ambiance at the sym posium was extremely collegial, due no doubt to the common academic interests and the personal friendships shared by the participants.

Book excerpt: Proceedings of an International Conference held in Vancouver, B.C., August 1993, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the journal Mathematics of Computation. It consisted of a Symposium on Numerical Analysis and a Minisymposium of Computational Number Theory. This proceedings contains 14 invited papers, including two not presented at the conference--an historical essay on integer factorization, and a paper on componentwise perturbation bounds in linear algebra. The invited papers present surveys on the various subdisciplines covered by Mathematics of Computation, in a historical perspective and in a language accessible to a wide audience. The 46 contributed papers address contemporary specialized work. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives introductory chapters on the classical basic and standard methods for asymptotic analysis, such as Watson's lemma, Laplace's method, the saddle point and steepest descent methods, stationary phase and Darboux's method. The methods, explained in great detail, will obtain asymptotic approximations of the well-known special functions of mathematical physics and probability theory. After these introductory chapters, the methods of uniform asymptotic analysis are described in which several parameters have influence on typical phenomena: turning points and transition points, coinciding saddle and singularities. In all these examples, the special functions are indicated that describe the peculiar behavior of the integrals. The text extensively covers the classical methods with an emphasis on how to obtain expansions, and how to use the results for numerical methods, in particular for approximating special functions. In this way, we work with a computational mind: how can we use certain expansions in numerical analysis and in computer programs, how can we compute coefficients, and so on.

Book excerpt: This book gives an introduction to the classical, well-known special functions which play a role in mathematical physics, especially in boundary value problems. Calculus and complex function theory form the basis of the book and numerous formulas are given. Particular attention is given to asymptomatic and numerical aspects of special functions, with numerous references to recent literature provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special functions arise in many problems of pure and applied mathematics, mathematical statistics, physics, and engineering. This book provides an up-to-date overview of numerical methods for computing special functions and discusses when to use these methods depending on the function and the range of parameters. Not only are standard and simple parameter domains considered, but methods valid for large and complex parameters are described as well. The first part of the book (basic methods) covers convergent and divergent series, Chebyshev expansions, numerical quadrature, and recurrence relations. Its focus is on the computation of special functions; however, it is suitable for general numerical courses. Pseudoalgorithms are given to help students write their own algorithms. In addition to these basic tools, the authors discuss other useful and efficient methods, such as methods for computing zeros of special functions, uniform asymptotic expansions, Padé approximations, and sequence transformations. The book also provides specific algorithms for computing several special functions (like Airy functions and parabolic cylinder functions, among others).
