Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Blood and Urine This Manual is intended to assist the practitioner or student in medicine in discovering the deviations from health, and their nature in the blood and the various secretions of the body. An outline of the mode of analysing the different products, suffi cient for practical purposes, is also subjoined, so as to make it a complete practical manual. The several branches of this subject have lately received a large share of attention, partien larly from the German and French authors and treatises somewhat analogous to this have appeared in those languages. The absence of such a one in this country has induced me to undertake the filling up of this deficiency. Much has also lately been done in the application Of organic chemistry to the explanation of the phaenomena of healthy and morbid actions. But I have avoided any notice of these views, as in many cases they are quite theoretical, and in the majority not well esta blished. The use of the modern microscope is revealing to us the true structure of bodies in health, and their alterations in disease, with their true relations to their vital products, secre tions. And as recourse to the microscope often abbreviates chemical experiments, and enables us to ascertain the chemical nature of very minute portions Of matter, I have added an ac count, with figures of the microscopical characters of each sub stance. In some cases, Where I have not had Opportunities, or at least insufficient ones, of testing their accuracy, or where I do not feel authorised in assenting to the correctness of their Observations, I have borrowed the statements of former authors, and have given their names as authorities. Further informa tion on these subjects and all their branches may be obtained from the writings of Becquerel, Berzelius, Bird, Christison, Liebig, Prout, Rayer, Rees, Simon, Turner, Vigla, Vogel, and Willis, to whom in some instances I am much indebted. [have also to acknowledge the kind assistance offered me on several occasions by W. Francis, Esq. It is to he wished that the facility I trust this Manual will afford those anxious to prose cute this most interesting branch of medical inquiry, in exa mining and appreciating morbid states of the various secretions, may enable us shortly to arrive at some more satisfactory con elusions respecting the pathological relations of these fluids. The first focuses on the pathway from symptom to diagnosis and covers the full range of symptoms commonly encountered by the urologist. Any particular symptom can be located within a matter of seconds and in each case differential diagnosis is explained with the aid of a flow chart. The second part of the book is devoted to the pathway from diagnosis to therapy, with each short chapter devoted to a specific diagnosis. Basic information is provided on the disease in question, along with an outline of state of the art treatment options and possible complications. Again, flow charts are used to help the reader to reach the correct therapeutic decision in different circumstances. Numerous high-definition photographs and illustrations are also included. This book will be a great asset for urologists and practitioners in related disciplines.

Book excerpt: Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review has proven to be the premiere resource to help prepare medical students for the surgical shelf exam and clinical wards. The second edition was conceived after listening to the feedback we received from students. We have added several new chapters and updated the others. This book continues to provide the reader with a comprehensive understanding of surgical diseases in one easy-to-use reference that combines multiple teaching formats. The book begins using a case based approach. The cases presented cover the diseases most commonly encountered on a surgical rotation. The cases are followed by a series of short questions and answers, designed to provide further understanding of the important aspects of the history, physical examination, differential diagnosis, diagnostic work-up and management, and questions that may arise on surgical rounds and on the shelf exam. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner to help reinforce important surgical exam concepts. The second edition of Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review will be of great utility for medical students when they rotate on surgery, as well as interns, physician assistant students, nursing students, and nurse practitioner students.
