Book excerpt: Museums have moved from a product to a marketing focus within the last ten years. This has entailed a painful reorientation of approaches to understanding visitors as ‘customers’; new ways of fundraising and sponsorship as government funding decreases; and grappling with using the internet for marketing. This book brings the latest in marketing thinking to bear on the museum sector taking into account both the commercial issues and social mission it involves. Carefully structured to be highly accessible the book offers: * A contemporary and relevant and global approach to museum marketing written by authors in Britain, Australia, the United States, and Asia * An approach that reflects the particular challenges museums of varying sizes face when seeking to market an experience to a diverse set of stakeholders: audience; funders; sponsors and government. * A particular focus on museum marketing in the 'Information Age' * Major case studies at the beginning and end of each section of the book, and smaller case studies within chapters The hugely experienced author team, includes both leading academics and practitioners to ensure the book has broad appeal and is both relevant, innovative and progressive in approach. It will be essential reading for students in museum studies, non-profit marketing, and arts management and marketing. It will also be equally relevant for professionals working in and managing museums and galleries, heritage attractions and ministries of arts.

Nearly every function within the museum benefits from a deeper understanding of visitors: curators, educators, fundraisers, marketers, store and cafe managers, guards, and volunteers. This book creatively instructs museums on how to study visitors to make their exhibits, programs, and shops more appealing for all segments of the public. Each chapter identifies an observed visitor behavior or attitude and details how it can significantly affect attendance, satisfaction, and loyalty. The author's approach explains how all museum personnel can participate in valuable observational research without breaking the bank on expensive studies.

Book excerpt: For art exhibitions in small and mid-scale organizations, the audience is often limited to a relatively small circle of artists and friends. To increase the visibility of exhibitions, spaces need more visitors and artists need larger audiences. Marketing for exhibitions serves as a crucial step to make such connections. The questions then, include how to market and communicate specifically for art exhibitions in non-institutional spaces, and how to take advantage of social media to minimize the cost. This project-based thesis derives from the experience of building and managing an Instagram account named “whyamihereart” which is designed as a platform to share marketing strategies for art exhibitions. Incorporating field observations, literature research, and expert opinions gathered from interviews, the account enables the research process to be accessible online, and serves as an archive for developing the Exhibition Marketing Toolkit. The Toolkit consists of systematic marketing strategies and accompanying hands-on worksheets. Going through six steps -- statement, target, resource, message, timeline, recap, exhibition-makers can customize a marketing plan for their own project. This thesis aims to bring attention to the marketing aspect of art exhibitions, to reflect on the development of the Exhibition Marketing Toolkit, and contributes a tool to help make the work of art administrators more accessible and impactful.
