Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth in fibre metal laminates (FMLs) is significantly more complex than in monolithic materials due to the interaction of various physical mechanisms that govern the growth of cracks in laminates. Extensive research has gone into the development of analytical models that try to predict the growth of surface and through-cracks in the FML Glare under fatigue loading. To date, less emphasis has been placed on developing fatigue crack growth models for part through cracks. These part through cracks exhibit different rates of growth for each layer of the laminate based upon differing stress levels and delamination zone sizes. To better predict the residual strength of FML structures, understanding the behavior of subsurface crack growth is required. For this reason, data of crack growth rates for layers of various laminates were compared to an analytical fatigue crack growth model developed for surface cracks in a specific type of FML, Glare. This paper gives an initial assessment of the model's veracity for subsurface crack growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fibre metal laminates were developed at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, from the beginning of the 1980s. This is a new family of hybrid materials consisting of thin metal layers bonded together by fibres embedded in an adhesive. As a result of this build-up, fibre metal laminates possess a mixture of the characteristics of both metals and composite materials. Initial development led to the `Arall' variant using aramid fibres, which was first applied on the C-17 military transport aircraft around 1990. Large-scale application became possible with a variant using glass fibres, dubbed `Glare', which was selected for the Airbus A380 super jumbo in 2001. This is the first book to discuss these new materials and it deals mostly with Glare. It covers most of the relevant aspects of the materials, from static mechanical properties, fatigue and impact to design, production and maintenance of aircraft structures. This book contains the basic information on these new materials necessary for engineers and aircraft operators alike.

Book excerpt: This book contributes to the field of hybrid technology, describing the current state of knowledge concerning the hybrid material concept of laminated metallic and composite sheets for primary aeronautical structural applications. It is the only book to date on fatigue and fracture of fibre metal laminates (FMLs). The first section of the book provides a general background of the FML technology, highlighting the major FML types developed and studied over the past decades in conjunction with an overview of industrial developments based on filed patents. In turn, the second section discusses the mechanical response to quasi-static loading, together with the fracture phenomena during quasi-static and cyclic loading. To consider the durability aspects related to strength justification and certification of primary aircraft structures, the third section discusses thermal aspects related to FMLs and their mechanical response to various environmental and acoustic conditions.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the residual strength of fibre reinforced metal laminates (FRMLs) and polymer matrix composite laminates (PMCLs) with a circular hole or sharp notch using an effective crack growth model (ECGM). Damage is assumed to initiate when the local normal stress at the hole edge/notch tip reaches the tensile strength or yield strength of the composite and metal layers, respectively. The damage in the constituent materials was modelled by fictitious cracks with cohesive stress acting on the crack surfaces, and the damage growth was simulated by extension of the fictitious cracks step by step and reduction of the cohesive stress with crack opening. The apparent fracture energy of composite layers and fracture toughness of metal layers were used to define the relationships between the tensile/yield strength and the critical crack opening. Based on the global equilibrium, an iterative technique was developed to evaluate the applied load required to produce the damage growth. The residual strength of notched composite laminates was defined by instability of the applied load with damage growth. The effect of hole/notch size on the residual strength was studied and the stress redistribution with damage growth was discussed. The residual strength simulated from ECGM correlated well with experimental data in the open literature.

Book excerpt: Delamination crack growth in a unidirectional composite laminate under static and fatigue loading conditions is investigated. An experimental program was performed to elucidate failure mechanisms and to characterize the growth rate of the delamination crack. Analytical modeling, based on microscopic observation, is conducted by using an advanced singular finite element method of the hybrid-stress model formulated through the minimum complementary energy principle. Solutions obtained from the analysis probe the fundamental nature of the problem. Implications of the results on the applicability of the classical laminate theory are discussed. Using a mixed-mode failure criterion, the delamination growth under a monotonically increasing load may be predicted satisfactorily. The rate of delamination crack propagation under fatigue loading is found to be related directly to the amplitudes of cyclic opening and shearing mode stress intensity factors by a power law relationship. The study elucidates many salient features of the problem, provides insight to the basic nature of the delamination failure behavior, and should be of practical importance in the design and testing of composite materials.

Book excerpt: This report highlights the development of a unified method for the formation mechanisms of matrix-dominated cracks in a class of structural laminates that are made using unidirectionally fiber reinforced composite plies. Because of the collimated reinforcement structure exhibited in this class of laminates, the growth of an individual matrix crack is confined either in the fiber-matrix interface or in the ply-to-ply interface. The former occurs as intraply crack caused by primarily by in-ply stresses, while the latter occurs as interply crack caused by interlaminar stresses. These are the two fundamental modes exhibited in matrix cracking. Experiments using graphite-epoxy composite systems have established that matrix cracking is actually a process in which a great number of similar cracks occur during the course of loading. The multiplicity in the crack formation process stems from the existence of material flaws which distribute randomly throughout the laminate, and from the internal reinforcement structure which inhibits individual crack from growing into large proportions. When viewed at the ply level, growth of a matrix crack is essentially brittle in nature; its growth path initially follows one of the two fundamental modes. When blunted, the initial mode may turn to the other mode. Thus, the individual growth path may be considered as piece-wise self-similar.
