Book excerpt: Intended for a second course in stationary processes, Stationary Stochastic Processes: Theory and Applications presents the theory behind the field’s widely scattered applications in engineering and science. In addition, it reviews sample function properties and spectral representations for stationary processes and fields, including a portion on stationary point processes. Features Presents and illustrates the fundamental correlation and spectral methods for stochastic processes and random fields Explains how the basic theory is used in special applications like detection theory and signal processing, spatial statistics, and reliability Motivates mathematical theory from a statistical model-building viewpoint Introduces a selection of special topics, including extreme value theory, filter theory, long-range dependence, and point processes Provides more than 100 exercises with hints to solutions and selected full solutions This book covers key topics such as ergodicity, crossing problems, and extremes, and opens the doors to a selection of special topics, like extreme value theory, filter theory, long-range dependence, and point processes, and includes many exercises and examples to illustrate the theory. Precise in mathematical details without being pedantic, Stationary Stochastic Processes: Theory and Applications is for the student with some experience with stochastic processes and a desire for deeper understanding without getting bogged down in abstract mathematics.

Book excerpt: Stochastic processes are mathematical models of random phenomena that evolve according to prescribed dynamics. Processes commonly used in applications are Markov chains in discrete and continuous time, renewal and regenerative processes, Poisson processes, and Brownian motion. This volume gives an in-depth description of the structure and basic properties of these stochastic processes. A main focus is on equilibrium distributions, strong laws of large numbers, and ordinary and functional central limit theorems for cost and performance parameters. Although these results differ for various processes, they have a common trait of being limit theorems for processes with regenerative increments. Extensive examples and exercises show how to formulate stochastic models of systems as functions of a system’s data and dynamics, and how to represent and analyze cost and performance measures. Topics include stochastic networks, spatial and space-time Poisson processes, queueing, reversible processes, simulation, Brownian approximations, and varied Markovian models. The technical level of the volume is between that of introductory texts that focus on highlights of applied stochastic processes, and advanced texts that focus on theoretical aspects of processes.

Book excerpt: This is a development of the book entitled Multidimensional Second Order Stochastic Processes. It provides a research expository treatment of infinite-dimensional stationary and nonstationary stochastic processes or time series, based on Hilbert and Banach space-valued second order random variables. Stochastic measures and scalar or operator bimeasures are fully discussed to develop integral representations of various classes of nonstationary processes such as harmonizable, V-bounded, Cramér and Karhunen classes as well as the stationary class. A new type of the Radon-Nikodým derivative of a Banach space-valued measure is introduced, together with Schauder basic measures, to study uniformly bounded linearly stationary processes.Emphasis is on the use of functional analysis and harmonic analysis as well as probability theory. Applications are made from the probabilistic and statistical points of view to prediction problems, Kalman filter, sampling theorems and strong laws of large numbers. Generalizations are made to consider Banach space-valued stochastic processes to include processes of pth order for p ≥ 1. Readers may find that the covariance kernel is always emphasized and reveals another aspect of stochastic processes. This book is intended not only for probabilists and statisticians, but also for functional analysts and communication engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics in Stochastic Processes covers specific processes that have a definite physical interpretation and that explicit numerical results can be obtained. This book contains five chapters and begins with the L2 stochastic processes and the concept of prediction theory. The next chapter discusses the principles of ergodic theorem to real analysis, Markov chains, and information theory. Another chapter deals with the sample function behavior of continuous parameter processes. This chapter also explores the general properties of Martingales and Markov processes, as well as the one-dimensional Brownian motion. The aim of this chapter is to illustrate those concepts and constructions that are basic in any discussion of continuous parameter processes, and to provide insights to more advanced material on Markov processes and potential theory. The final chapter demonstrates the use of theory of continuous parameter processes to develop the Itô stochastic integral. This chapter also provides the solution of stochastic differential equations. This book will be of great value to mathematicians, engineers, and physicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon the previous editions, this textbook is a first course in stochastic processes taken by undergraduate and graduate students (MS and PhD students from math, statistics, economics, computer science, engineering, and finance departments) who have had a course in probability theory. It covers Markov chains in discrete and continuous time, Poisson processes, renewal processes, martingales, and option pricing. One can only learn a subject by seeing it in action, so there are a large number of examples and more than 300 carefully chosen exercises to deepen the reader’s understanding. Drawing from teaching experience and student feedback, there are many new examples and problems with solutions that use TI-83 to eliminate the tedious details of solving linear equations by hand, and the collection of exercises is much improved, with many more biological examples. Originally included in previous editions, material too advanced for this first course in stochastic processes has been eliminated while treatment of other topics useful for applications has been expanded. In addition, the ordering of topics has been improved; for example, the difficult subject of martingales is delayed until its usefulness can be applied in the treatment of mathematical finance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book defines and investigates the concept of a random object. To accomplish this task in a natural way, it brings together three major areas; statistical inference, measure-theoretic probability theory and stochastic processes. This point of view has not been explored by existing textbooks; one would need material on real analysis, measure and probability theory, as well as stochastic processes - in addition to at least one text on statistics- to capture the detail and depth of material that has gone into this volume. Presents and illustrates ‘random objects’ in different contexts, under a unified framework, starting with rudimentary results on random variables and random sequences, all the way up to stochastic partial differential equations. Reviews rudimentary probability and introduces statistical inference, from basic to advanced, thus making the transition from basic statistical modeling and estimation to advanced topics more natural and concrete. Compact and comprehensive presentation of the material that will be useful to a reader from the mathematics and statistical sciences, at any stage of their career, either as a graduate student, an instructor, or an academician conducting research and requiring quick references and examples to classic topics. Includes 378 exercises, with the solutions manual available on the book's website. 121 illustrative examples of the concepts presented in the text (many including multiple items in a single example). The book is targeted towards students at the master’s and Ph.D. levels, as well as, academicians in the mathematics, statistics and related disciplines. Basic knowledge of calculus and matrix algebra is required. Prior knowledge of probability or measure theory is welcomed but not necessary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of lectures which I gave dur ing the academic year 1972-73 to third-year students a~ Aarhus University in Denmark. The purpose of the book, as of the lectures, is to survey some of the main themes in the modern theory of stochastic processes. In my previous book Probability: ! survey of the mathe matical theory I gave a short overview of "classical" proba bility mathematics, concentrating especially on sums of inde pendent random variables. I did not discuss specific appli cations of the theory; I did strive for a spirit friendly to application by coming to grips as fast as I could with the major problems and techniques and by avoiding too high levels of abstraction and completeness. At the same time, I tried to make the proofs both rigorous and motivated and to show how certain results have evolved rather than just presenting them in polished final form. The same remarks apply to this book, at least as a statement of intentions, and it can serve as a sequel to the earlier one continuing the story in the same style and spirit. The contents of the present book fall roughly into two parts. The first deals mostly with stationary processes, which provide the mathematics for describing phenomena in a steady state overall but subject to random fluctuations. Chapter 4 is the heart of this part.
