Book Synopsis The Baltic Pilgrimage by : Marc C Watson
Download or read book The Baltic Pilgrimage written by Marc C Watson and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 1016 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In AD 1103, in the central lands of the Rus and the Siberian plains, the earth quaked as it was rent and torn asunder for hundreds of miles southward. Spilling forth from this deep abyss, chasm, was a deluge of enchanted energies and a series of interlocking deities who, having been trapped within the forming of the Earth, now ascended up, residing upon Luna, overlooking the world below. The dark and light energies of magic leaking into the atmosphere, encasing Earth and altering the civilizations upon her forever. Having learned to incorporate these new magical energies into restricted priesthoods, the militaries and daily life of all Europeans and Asians had, by AD 1337, changed wildly. And yet it was also at this time that Europe began to face a new and wholly daunting threat of a unified Lithuania, being the largest landmass kingdom in all of Europe, which was ruled over by the quasi-immortal Undeath Aristocracy. The Teutonic Order, having been invited by the Polish crown into the Baltic for their protection, was now Europe’s, and, even more dire, Christianity’s, last bulwark and defensive line against the encroaching corruption and vile taint of nature that was wrought by the undeath and their monstrous legions of Norr, the rank-and-file infantry who enforced the dark and enslaving rule of the undeath. The coming events and the newly arrived Teutonic member, Ludwig, would change, with steel, anger, and magical spells, not just the course and shape of events in the Baltic, but the very face and future of not just Christianity but humanity as a whole.
Book Synopsis Speech and Language by : Norman J. Lass
Download or read book Speech and Language written by Norman J. Lass and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speech and Language: Volume 2, Advances in Basic Research and Practice is a compendium of papers that discusses the processes and pathologies of speech and language, such as functional articulation disorders, lexical development, and a group therapy for treating stuttering. Some papers deal with vocal fold vibrations, childhood homonymy, framework for conversational speech behaviors, and vibrotactile testing. One paper cites studies of Hersen and Barlow (1976) that treatments warrant consideration only if these are powerful enough to effect obvious gains; and of Gilbert, McPeek, and Mosteller (1977) that treatment research is more likely to give modest than substantial gains—the degree of gains which can also be difficult to detect. Another paper examines suggestions for teaching words to language-disordered children, that when knowledge of normal language processes is applied in training approaches, effective and individualized programs will follow. Used in the treatment of stuttering, the Shaping Group, which employs action and many other treatment models, shows that its approach is effective. Another paper notes that before a surgical correction of voice disorders is undertaken, the importance of knowing the possible effects of various procedures on the voice should first be known. The compendium is well suited for linguists, ethnologists, psychologists, speech therapists, and researchers whose works involve linguistics, learning, communications, corrective surgery, and syntax.

Book Synopsis Language Acquisition by : Jill G. De Villiers
Download or read book Language Acquisition written by Jill G. De Villiers and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of language acquisition has become a center of scientific inquiry into the nature of the human mind. The result is a windfall of new information about language, about learning, and about children themselves. In Language Acquisition Jill and Peter de Villiers provide a lively introduction to this fast-growing field. Their book deals centrally with the way the child acquires the sounds, meanings, and syntax of his language, and the way he learns to use his language to communicate with others. In discussing these issues, the de Villiers provide a clear and insightful treatment of the classic questions about language acquisition: Does the child show a genetic predisposition for speech, or grammar, or semantics which makes him uniquely able to learn human language? What kinds of learning are involved in acquiring language and what kinds of experience with a language are necessary to support such learning? Is there a critical period during the child's development which is optimal for language acquisition? And what kind of psychological disabilities underlie the failure to acquire language?
Download or read book Dyed Souls written by Gary Santorella and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dyed Souls takes on the human cost of destructive behaviour, in both a Darwinian and Philosophical context. It symbolises the growing ethical ambiguity of current American culture and examines the notion of identity in a civilisation lacking in substantive culture. Set in the 1980’s, Dyed Souls follows the life of 13-year-old Charlie; an intelligent, troubled teen, taken from his grandparents by his drug addicted mother, only to end up at Hawthorne Residential Treatment Village. There he ponders Darwin, Socrates, and Plato, and unexpectedly falls in love with a girl named Margo. When she breaks his heart, Charlie runs away, beginning a new journey that will leave him shattered before he finally makes it to Virginia. Back with his grandparents, the return of his mother forces him to learn a bitter truth that changes his life forever. Dyed Souls is more a work of philosophy than psychology, examining an America where the notion of living an ethical life has become increasingly vague, superficial, and distorted, and its implications for a species capable of both great cruelty and great compassion. It is a thought-provoking, gritty novel, highlighting how blatant self-interest and prurient self-gratification has replaced the pursuit of wisdom and reason. It will appeal to fans of literary fiction and philosophical literature. A coming-of-age novel, it is suitable for both young adult and adult readers.
