Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Susannah Ticciati explores Augustine's scriptural interpretation, as well as the ways in which he understands the character of signs in theory. The book explores Augustine's scriptural world via three case studies, each geared towards the healing of a particular modern opposition. The three, interrelated, modern oppositions are rooted in an insufficient semiotic worldview. Ticciati argues they contribute to the alienation of the modern reader not only from Augustine's scriptural world, but more generally from the scriptural world as habitation. Examining the ways in which the therapy for our modern day semiotic illiteracy can be found in the 5th-6th-century Augustine, Ticciati brings close readings of Augustine to bear on significant concerns of our own day: specifically, our modern alienations from the rich world of Scripture."--

Book excerpt: Susannah Ticciati draws on Augustine to address the question of truth in the public sphere. In the face of the degeneration of public normative discourse, the book finds in Augustine the resources for the repair of a series of (post)modern oppositions, making way for a rehabilitation of public normativity. The book discovers in Augustine a truth that is at once inward and public. It is a truth which both scriptural author and interpreter, prompted by the words of Scripture, seek in common. It is a truth which Christ speaks on behalf of others, and which others in turn are liberated to speak in Christ. Through Augustine, Ticciati offers a scriptural hermeneutic that overcomes a false opposition between modern and postmodern modes of reading, and arrives at a Christologically informed vision of coinherence rather than inclusion, of substitutionary rather than tokenist representation, and of cosmic rather than colonial breadth.

From the tree of life to Noah's ark, from circumcision to animal sacrifice. From the feasts, the Passover lamb, and the manna in the wilderness to the furniture in the tabernacle and the visions of prophets. From the Lord's Supper to baptism and from the cross to the empty tomb. Throughout the Scriptures, signs and symbols weave a consistent message of God's presence, grace, and faithfulness. This illustrated resource will help readers understand key biblical images that reveal God's purposes and truth. Each entry includes multiple illustrations, explanations, and key Bible passages. Sidebars, quotes, and photos make this guide approachable and engaging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnold brings to the Biblical study of the end times his rationalistic and scientific approach. While this approach enhances, it in no way changes or attempts to correct Biblical text or its meaning. Arnold defines the Eschaton, the end of all things in Greek, as the composite of “signs of the end, the Lord’s return, the judgment, and life eternal or damnation“. He believes the Lord’s use of the word “generation” based on the original Greek is ‘an interval of time, an age’. This age of believers, Jesus teaches, will not pass away until all the signs of the end have taken place. By the doctrine of Predestination the end can not come until the last Christian on earth is born. He defines the last believers of this age as the “Omega Generation”. As they are born, their family line will cease and when the last Christian of the Omega Generation is born, all family lines on earth will end. With these changes will come a dramatic decrease in global population as prophesied in Scripture. After reviewing what changes this will bring to the earth, he discusses the signs of the times which the secular world takes as pointers to the possible end of the world. He then takes us on a detailed description of the Biblical signs. These signs will be highly visible during the lives of the Omega Generation. Following the return of our Lord, Dr. Arnold describes the Judgment, the New Jerusalem and the Inferno. Other very unique concepts introduced by Arnold in The Eschaton include a discussion of the cleansing of the Cosmos by fire and the events that occur following our death. All those who hold the Bible to be Truth will find this book to be attention grabbing, exciting and a clear explanation and revelation of that truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Christian Doctrine is a theological text written by Augustine of Hippo. It consists of four books that describe how to interpret and teach the Scriptures. By writing this text, Augustine set three tasks for Christian teachers and preachers: to discover the truth in the contents of the Scriptures, to teach the truth from the Scriptures, and to defend scriptural truth when it was attacked. Book One discusses enjoyment, use, interpretation, and the relation of various Christian doctrines to these concepts; Book Two discusses the types of unknown signs present in the world and defines each and presents methods for understanding the Scriptures; Book Three discusses how to interpret ambiguous literal and ambiguous figurative signs. Ambiguous signs are those whose meaning is unclear or confused; Book Four discusses the relationship between Christian truth and rhetoric, the importance of eloquence, and the role of the preacher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the author’s Forwood Lectures for 1995 in the University of Liverpool. The first two chapters incorporate the full text of these and study early Christian conceptions of signs and signification, and investigate the ways in which Christian authors, especially Augustine of Hippo and Gregory the Great, made use of theories of meaning in their ways of interpreting scriptures. Their interest in the notions of communities based on shared traditions of reading, understanding and interpretation is given special attention. Markus also considers the question of the ways in which different approaches to the Bible have had more far-reaching implications for their authors’ world-views: to what extent biblical hermeneutics helped to shape their hermeneutics of experience. Their differing ways of approaching the Bible is related to the huge change in Christian self-understanding between Augustine (c. AD 400) and Gregory the Great (c. 600): ascetic habits of reading come to shape a general response to the world as well as to the biblical text. The lecture texts are complemented by further chapters devoted specifically to the theory of signs and meaning, and to some of its applications in special contexts, such as magic and ritual.

Book excerpt: From one of the world’s most beloved Bible teachers comes a timely, compelling, and comprehensive biblical interpretation of Bible prophecy, the end times, and the apocalypse viewed through the lens of current world events. Many Christians struggle to understand the Book of Revelation. “The end times.” “The apocalypse.” “The day of judgment.” These terms are both fascinating and frightening – but what do they really mean? Drawing from decades of study, Dr. Jeremiah explains every key sign of the approaching apocalypse and what it means for you, including international, cultural, heavenly, tribulation, and end signs. With his engaging writing style and clear analysis of how current world events were foretold in the Bible, The Book of Signs is an encouraging guide to the Book of Revelation. In The Book of Signs, Dr. David Jeremiah offers answers to questions including: What does the Bible tell us about the future? How much can we understand about biblical prophecy and its application in our lives? What signs and signals will precede the end of everything as we know it? Which of those signs and signals have already come to pass, which are we experiencing now, and which are still to come? An epic and authoritative guide to biblical prophecy, The Book of Signs is a must-have resource for Christians seeking to navigate the uncertainties of the present and embrace God’s promises for the future with a renewed sense of hope and purpose.

Book excerpt: "Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don't drift along taking everything for granted. Give yourselves regular checkups. You need firsthand evidence, not mere hearsay, that Jesus Christ is in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do something about it." (2 Cor.13:5, The Message Bible) "My purpose in writing is simply this: that you who believe in God's Son will know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you have eternal life, the reality and not the illusion." (1Jo 5:13, The Message Bible) The epistle of 1 John identifies the vital signs of eternal life. They provide a diagnostic tool that will reveal our true spiritual condition. We can accurately test ourselves for the presence, or absence, of eternal life. Also, the strength, or weakness, of each vital sign reveals the quality of our spiritual health and where we need to take emergency action. Calvin Partain was born to parents who were devout believers in Jesus Christ. He was saved in his childhood years. When a senior in high school God made it clear to him that his calling in life was to be a pastor-teacher. His formal training includes the normal College, Seminary, and countless seminars and conferences. But his main preparation for writing this book has come through more than fifty years of serving people as their pastor. Calvin is theologically conservative. His conviction is that the Bible is God's inerrant revelation of Himself to man, written by divinely inspired men. Calvin has been married to his high school sweetheart for over fifty years. God gave Calvin and his wife Marion two sons and a daughter, two grand-daughters and three grand-sons. One son and a grand-daughter are in heaven. "This book is essential for anyone that wants to inventory their own spiritual health, grow greatly in Christ, or nurture others in doing all of the above." Dr. Keith E. Eitel Dean of the Roy Fish School of Evangelism and Missions Professor of Missions Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
