Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Acts of Pope Leo XIII: Preceded by a Sketch of the Last Days of Pius IX. And the Origin and Laws of the Conclave The title-page of this compilation sufficiently indicates its nature, and a preface would be superfluous were it not the editor's duty to give the public some information in regard to the sources from which he has drawn his materials, and the manner in which the book has been put together. That a book of this kind was needed is evident from the very greatness of the names which form our title-page but that the need is supplied only now, when nearly a year has elapsed since the death of Pius IX. And the election of his successor, seems to require some explanation. Letters from Roman correspondents to newspapers in the various countries of the Old and the New Worlds pamphlets purporting to give correct information on the great events which form our subject books, large and small, entitled Life of Pius IX. And Life of Leo XIII. Were hurriedly poured from the press and it was to be expected that mere rumors would, in many instances, be stated as facts, and that the haste of the writers would betray them into many errors and exaggerations. It was, therefore, necessary to wait till the fermentation had subsided, and we could obtain a clear View of the subject in hand. It was necessary to compare the several writings, and to correct or supplement one by another. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Conclave by : John Allen

Book excerpt: A captivating insider’s guide to the politics and personalities that will have a tremendous impact on one of the world’s most secretive and important events–the election of a pope. The next time a conclave unfolds in Rome, some 6,000 journalists are expected to descend on the Eternal City to cover the death of John Paul II and report on the election of his successor. The man in white who emerges from the Sistine Chapel at its conclusion will automatically become one of the most important figures on earth, a leader who commands a unique combination of political and spiritual power. Depending on how he chooses to exercise that power, governments and political systems may rise or fall, religious wars may heat up or abate, and the Church may undergo a radical transformation–from changes in its stances on such issues as sexuality, the place of women in the Church, to the role of the papacy itself. Conclave is a fascinating look at the election process and at what this headline-making occasion will mean to the world. John L. Allen, Jr., takes readers behind the scenes to reveal the issues, parties, and people most likely to determine the outcome. Setting the election within a broader context, he explains why it matters who becomes pope, discusses their role in the modern world, and examines the issues that will form the agenda of the next papacy. Although the book is not intended as a “handicapper’s guide,” Allen does offer his own informed list of the “top twenty” contenders for the position. He creates, as well, a classification system that clarifies the differences among the informal political parties that exist within the College of Cardinals, the body of 130-plus men who will elect John Paul II’s successor. In conclusion, he presents a critical, independent-minded profile of each of those cardinals–for one of them will certainly be the new pope.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Latin Christianity, Vol. 7 of 8: Including That of the Popes to the Pontificate of Nicolas V For two years and above three months the Papal See was vacant.2 Impatient Christendom began to mur mur. The King of France, Louis le Hutin, was called upon to interpose both by the general voice and by his own interests. The office devolved on his brother Philip, Count Of Ponthieu. By him the reluctant Cardinals were brought partly by force, partly in Conclm at veigled, to Lyons. The pious fraud of Philip Lyons' was highly admired. He solemnly promised that they should not be imprisoned in the Conclave, but have free leave to depart wherever they would. Philip was suddenly summoned to Paris by the death Of the King of France, but he left the Conclave under strict and severe guard. No election is consummated if all the votes have not been published. Before the ballots are placed in the chalice, all the electors must swear, in succession, that they have named only him whom they believe to be the best among them. The elector must write on the ticket his own name and that of the cardinal to whom he gives his vote. Their tickets must be folded and sealed, in such wise that the seal will show that there are not two tickets put in by the same elec tor.
