Book excerpt: This book offers comprehensive coverage of the operation and maintenance of large hydro generators This book is a practical handbook for engineers and maintenance staff responsible for the upkeep of large salient-pole hydro generators used in electric power plants. Focusing on the physics and maintenance of large vertical salient pole generators, it offers readers real-world experience, problem description, and solutions, while teaching them about the design, modernization, inspections, maintenance, and operation of salient pole machines. Handbook of Large Hydro Generators: Operation and Maintenance provides an introduction to the principles of operation of synchronous machines. It then covers design and construction, auxiliary systems, operation and control, and monitoring and diagnostics of generators. Generator protection, inspection practices and methodology and auxiliaries inspections are also examined. The final two chapters are dedicated to maintenance and testing, and maintenance philosophies, upgrades, and uprates. The handbook includes over 420 color photos and 180 illustrations, forms, and tables to complement the topics covered in the chapters. Written with a machine operator and inspector in mind, Handbook of Large Hydro Generators: Operation and Maintenance: Instructs readers how to perform complete machine inspections, understand what they are doing, and find solutions for any problems encountered Includes real-life, practical, field experiences so that readers can familiarize themselves with aspects of machine operation, maintenance, and solutions to common problems Benefits experienced and new power plant operators, generator design engineers and operations engineers. Is authored by industry experts who participated in the writing and maintenance of IEEE standards (IEEE C50.12 and C50.13) on the subject Handbook of Large Hydro Generators: Operation and Maintenance is an ideal resource for scientists and engineers whose research interest is in electromagnetic and energy conversion. It is also an excellent book for senior undergraduate and graduate students majoring in energy generation, and generator operation and maintenance.

Book excerpt: The need to improve plant availability has lead to development and application of monitoring and diagnostic systems. These systems were applied on critical plant equipment at the Delmarva Power Indian Power Station. Predictive maintenance programs coupled with an enhanced monitoring and diagnostic system are targeted at preventing major equipment breakdown with effective system maintenance. System developments and examples are described. The system is based on a central microprocess system which can monitor and display any number of critical variables: including vibration amplitude, flow rates, speed, temperatures, pressures, etc. This has been particularly useful in diagnosing system problems by display of critical dependent relationships. Also, limits have been established prompting maintenance and /or operator personnel to take a recommended action, when exceeded. Two examples of the system application are included: the main unit's generator stator primary water cooling system and the main boiler feed pump. The system is being expanded to include additional critical components and monitoring.

Book excerpt: The introduction of the microprocessor in computer and system engineering has motivated the development of many new concepts and has simplified the design of many modern industrial systems. During the first decade of their life. microprocessors have shown a tremendous evolution in all possible directions (technology. power. functionality. I/O handling. etc). Of course putting the microprocessors and their environmental devices into properly operating systems is a complex and difficult task requiring high skills for melding and integrating hardware. and systemic components. software This book was motivated by the editors' feeling that a cohesive reference is needed providing a good coverage of modern industrial applications of microprocessor-based real time control, together with latest advanced methodological issues. Unavoidably a single volume cannot be exhaustive. but the present book contains a sufficient number of important real-time applications. The book is divided in two sections. Section I deals with general hardware. software and systemic topics. and involves six chapters. Chapter 1. by Gupta and Toong. presents an overview of the development of microprocessors during their first twelve years of existence. Chapter 2. by Dasgupta. deals with a number of system software concepts for real time microprocessor-based systems (task scheduling. memory management. input-output aspects. programming language reqUirements.
