Book excerpt: On Gunnery traces the fascinating evolution of artillery from the battlefields of the American Civil War to the desert sands of the middle east at the dawn of the 21st Century. Chronicling the evolution of fire direction and control from the muzzle loaded cannons of the Union and Confederacy to the shock and awe of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the book examines, in detail, the development of artillery equipment and procedures that brought the art of the artillerist into the modern age. Significant developments in field artillery gunnery, including the birth of indirect fire at the turn of the 20th century, the development of predicted fire techniques for artillery and machine guns during the Great War, the World War II era development of the Fire Direction Center, and the rise of automated computer technology are presented at a level of detail that will intrigue artillerymen and historians alike. A must read for the serious gunner or anyone interested in the art and science of artillery.

Book Synopsis Naval Anti-Aircraft Guns and Gunnery by : Norman Friedman
Download or read book Naval Anti-Aircraft Guns and Gunnery written by Norman Friedman and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book does for naval anti-aircraft defense what FriedmanÕs Naval Firepower did for surface gunnery Ð it makes a highly complex but historically crucial subject accessible to the layman. It traces the growing aerial threat from its inception in WWI and the response of each of the major navies down to the end of WWII, highlighting in particular the underestimated danger from dive-bombing. The work considers what effective AA fire-control required, and how well each navyÕs systems actually worked, analyzing the weapons, how they were placed on ships, and how this reflected the tactical concepts of naval AA defense. All important guns, directors and electronics are represented in close-up photos and drawings, and lengthy appendices detail their technical data. It is, simply, another superb contribution to naval technical history by its leading exponent.

Book Synopsis Assessment of the SIMITAR Gunnery Training Strategy Through Development of a Database of Gunnery Outcome Measures by : Monte D. Smith
Download or read book Assessment of the SIMITAR Gunnery Training Strategy Through Development of a Database of Gunnery Outcome Measures written by Monte D. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report assesses the impact of the Simulation in Training for Advanced Readiness (SIMITAR) compressed gunnery training strategy for Army National Guard (ARNG) armored and mechanized infantry units. This strategy emphasizes the use of state of the art training aids, devices, simulators, and simulations (TADSS) in response to challenges posed by time and range constraints experienced by ARNG combat units. Assessment entailed development of a longitudinal database of gunnery related information generated before (1993-1994) and during (1995-1997) SIMITAR strategy implementation. This information was collected from armored and mechanized infantry units from a SIMITAR test brigade and from six enhanced no SIMITAR comparison brigades. Overall, the SIMITAR training strategy was successful. Results showed that final, crew level, tank gunnery qualification on Table 8 did not differ either between the SIMITAR and comparison units, or within the SIMITAR test unit, across data collection years. Bradley Fighting Vehicle Table 8 qualification rate, however, did favor the comparison units. Perhaps more importantly, the SIMITAR strategy permitted most (94%) fully staffed SIMITAR platoons to complete gunnery Table 8 (with a 45% overall qualification rate) and enabled company and higher level maneuver training objectives to be accomplished, all within a normal 39 day yearly training calendar. Suggestions for research needed to extend SIMITAR training strategy benefits are provided."--DITC.
