Book excerpt: This book is intended as an introduction to harmonic analysis and generalized Gelfand pairs. Starting with the elementary theory of Fourier series and Fourier integrals, the author proceeds to abstract harmonic analysis on locally compact abelian groups and Gelfand pairs. Finally a more advanced theory of generalized Gelfand pairs is developed. This book is aimed at advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students. The scope of the book is limited, with the aim of enabling students to reach a level suitable for starting PhD research. The main prerequisites for the book are elementary real, complex and functional analysis. In the later chapters, familiarity with some more advanced functional analysis is assumed, in particular with the spectral theory of (unbounded) self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space. Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis and Applications by : John J. Benedetto
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis and Applications written by John J. Benedetto and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-07-29 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmonic analysis plays an essential role in understanding a host of engineering, mathematical, and scientific ideas. In Harmonic Analysis and Applications, the analysis and synthesis of functions in terms of harmonics is presented in such a way as to demonstrate the vitality, power, elegance, usefulness, and the intricacy and simplicity of the subject. This book is about classical harmonic analysis - a textbook suitable for students, and an essay and general reference suitable for mathematicians, physicists, and others who use harmonic analysis. Throughout the book, material is provided for an upper level undergraduate course in harmonic analysis and some of its applications. In addition, the advanced material in Harmonic Analysis and Applications is well-suited for graduate courses. The course is outlined in Prologue I. This course material is excellent, not only for students, but also for scientists, mathematicians, and engineers as a general reference. Chapter 1 covers the Fourier analysis of integrable and square integrable (finite energy) functions on R. Chapter 2 of the text covers distribution theory, emphasizing the theory's useful vantage point for dealing with problems and general concepts from engineering, physics, and mathematics. Chapter 3 deals with Fourier series, including the Fourier analysis of finite and infinite sequences, as well as functions defined on finite intervals. The mathematical presentation, insightful perspectives, and numerous well-chosen examples and exercises in Harmonic Analysis and Applications make this book well worth having in your collection.

Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis and Special Functions on Symmetric Spaces by : Gerrit Heckman
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis and Special Functions on Symmetric Spaces written by Gerrit Heckman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1995-02-08 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two parts of this sharply focused book, Hypergeometric and Special Functions and Harmonic Analysis on Semisimple Symmetric Spaces, are derived from lecture notes for the European School of Group Theory, a forum providing high-level courses on recent developments in group theory. The authors provide students and researchers with a thorough and thoughtful overview, elaborating on the topic with clear statements of definitions and theorems and augmenting these withtime-saving examples. An extensive set of notes supplements the text.Heckman and Schlichtkrull extend the ideas of harmonic analysis on semisimple symmetric spaces to embrace the theory of hypergeometric and spherical functions and show that the K-variant Eisenstein integrals for G/H are hypergeometric functions under this theory. They lead readers from the fundamentals of semisimple symmetric spaces of G/H to the frontier, including generalization, to the Riemannian case. This volume will interest harmonic analysts, those working on or applying the theory of symmetric spaces; it will also appeal to those with an interest in special functions.Extends ideas of harmonic analysis on symmetric spacesFirst treatment of the theory to include hypergeometric and spherical functionsLinks algebraic, analytic, and geometric methods
Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis on Semigroups by : C. van den Berg
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis on Semigroups written by C. van den Berg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourier transform and the Laplace transform of a positive measure share, together with its moment sequence, a positive definiteness property which under certain regularity assumptions is characteristic for such expressions. This is formulated in exact terms in the famous theorems of Bochner, Bernstein-Widder and Hamburger. All three theorems can be viewed as special cases of a general theorem about functions qJ on abelian semigroups with involution (S, +, *) which are positive definite in the sense that the matrix (qJ(sJ + Sk» is positive definite for all finite choices of elements St, . . . , Sn from S. The three basic results mentioned above correspond to (~, +, x* = -x), ([0, 00[, +, x* = x) and (No, +, n* = n). The purpose of this book is to provide a treatment of these positive definite functions on abelian semigroups with involution. In doing so we also discuss related topics such as negative definite functions, completely mono tone functions and Hoeffding-type inequalities. We view these subjects as important ingredients of harmonic analysis on semigroups. It has been our aim, simultaneously, to write a book which can serve as a textbook for an advanced graduate course, because we feel that the notion of positive definiteness is an important and basic notion which occurs in mathematics as often as the notion of a Hilbert space.
Book Synopsis A First Course in Harmonic Analysis by : Anton Deitmar
Download or read book A First Course in Harmonic Analysis written by Anton Deitmar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces harmonic analysis at an undergraduate level. In doing so it covers Fourier analysis and paves the way for Poisson Summation Formula. Another central feature is that is makes the reader aware of the fact that both principal incarnations of Fourier theory, the Fourier series and the Fourier transform, are special cases of a more general theory arising in the context of locally compact abelian groups. The final goal of this book is to introduce the reader to the techniques used in harmonic analysis of noncommutative groups. These techniques are explained in the context of matrix groups as a principal example.

This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume gathers selected, peer-reviewed papers from the "Modern Methods, Problems and Applications of Operator Theory and Harmonic Analysis VIII" (OTHA 2018) conference, which was held in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in April 2018. The book covers a diverse range of topics in advanced mathematics, including harmonic analysis, functional analysis, operator theory, function theory, differential equations and fractional analysis – all fields that have been intensively developed in recent decades. Direct and inverse problems arising in mathematical physics are studied and new methods for solving them are presented. Complex multiparameter objects that require the involvement of operators with variable parameters and functional spaces, with fractional and even variable exponents, make these approaches all the more relevant. Given its scope, the book will especially benefit researchers with an interest in new trends in harmonic analysis and operator theory, though it will also appeal to graduate students seeking new and intriguing topics for further investigation.

Book Synopsis Fourier Analysis on Number Fields by : Dinakar Ramakrishnan
Download or read book Fourier Analysis on Number Fields written by Dinakar Ramakrishnan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern approach to number theory through a blending of complementary algebraic and analytic perspectives, emphasising harmonic analysis on topological groups. The main goal is to cover John Tates visionary thesis, giving virtually all of the necessary analytic details and topological preliminaries -- technical prerequisites that are often foreign to the typical, more algebraically inclined number theorist. While most of the existing treatments of Tates thesis are somewhat terse and less than complete, the intent here is to be more leisurely, more comprehensive, and more comprehensible. While the choice of objects and methods is naturally guided by specific mathematical goals, the approach is by no means narrow. In fact, the subject matter at hand is germane not only to budding number theorists, but also to students of harmonic analysis or the representation theory of Lie groups. The text addresses students who have taken a year of graduate-level course in algebra, analysis, and topology. Moreover, the work will act as a good reference for working mathematicians interested in any of these fields.
