Book excerpt: The future telecom ecosystem will be composed by a set of heterogeneous wireless and cellular networks and user terminal capable to connect and communicate with any of these networks. This thesis contributes for evolution of convergence of wireless heterogeneous networks and to propose novel mechanisms to support low latency handover at authentication level using network selection, security context management and mobility in future telecom ecosystem to allow ubiquitous access to the Internet and services to any individual on the move. This access should be possible anytime anywhere while ensuring the right level of security to the end users as well to the networks. One main objective of the thesis is to define seamless secured roaming mechanisms to enable subscribers or users to roam along different access networks indifferent of access technologies, operators and accessing mechanisms. The proposed thesis provides a roaming & interworking solution using intermediary entity, called Roaming Interworking Intermediary (RII), which enable the secure handover across different access systems and different operator domains without service interruption. RII acts like a broker in the RII architecture between home and visited operator networks. RII provides mobility management, context transfer between service providers, security architecture for authentication and associations of users while roaming, network and presence management. The thesis also defines new mechanisms to enable low latency during handovers and roaming by optimizing and introducing new authentication and mobility models (post handover techniques) in heterogeneous networks. We have provided new methods to solve ever longing issue of user identity and routing of user authentication information from visiting access networks with or without a direct SLA with the home network. We have introduced dynamic authentication model with the proposed RII architecture where a user or subscriber gets authenticated at the visiting network without re-routing authentication information to home networks. The thesis also propose a new mobility mechanisms based on Proxy Mobile IP and extending AAA infrastructure to obtain very low latency during handover in WLAN, WIMAX and 3G networks. Testbeds and comparative studies between proposed and existing models for authentication and mobility are provided. This thesis also provides novel pre handover techniques in heterogeneous networks to ensure seamless handover during mobility and roaming. This method is a network centric approach where the access networks controls whole procedures of network selection, security, mobility etc... with the help of mobile terminals and visiting networks. Therefore, new models for location prediction based Network selection, security context management for authentications, context based mobility models are proposed in this thesis. New supporting protocols and extensions of existing protocol to achieve seamless handovers are proposed in this work. A full testbed is built with the implementation of the proposed protocols to evaluate the proposed of the efficiency of the proposed mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Heterogeneous wireless networking, which is sometimes referred to as the fourth-generation (4G) wireless, is a new frontier in the future wireless communications technology and there has been a growing interest on this topic among researchers and engineers in both academia and industry. This book will include a set of research and survey articles featuring the recent advances in theory and applications of heterogeneous wireless networking technology for the next generation (e.g., fourth generation) wireless communications systems. With the rapid growth in the number of wireless applications, services and devices, using a single wireless technology such as a second generation (2G) and third generation (3G) wireless system would not be efficient to deliver high speed data rate and quality-of-service (QoS) support to mobile users in a seamless way. Fourth generation (4G) wireless systems are devised with the vision of heterogeneity in which a mobile user/device will be able to connect to multiple wireless networks (e.g., WLAN, cellular, WMAN) simultaneously. This book intends to provide a unified view on the state-of-the-art of protocols and architectures for heterogeneous wireless networking. The contributed articles will cover both the theoretical concepts and system-level implementation issues related to design, analysis, and optimization of architectures and protocols for heterogeneous wireless access networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telecommunication network has evolved from 1G to 4G in the past decades. One of the typical characteristics of the 4G network is the coexistence of heterogeneous radio access technologies, which offers end-users the capability to connect them and to switch between them with their mobile devices of the new generation. However, selecting the right network is not an easy task for mobile users since access network condition changes rapidly. Moreover, video streaming is becoming the major data service over the mobile network where content providers and network operators should cooperate to guarantee the quality of video delivery. In order to cope with this context, the thesis concerns the design of a novel approach for making an optimal network selection decision and architecture for improving the performance of adaptive streaming in the context of a heterogeneous network. Firstly, we introduce an analytical model (i.e. linear discrete-time system) to describe the network selection procedure considering one traffic class. Then, we consider the design of a selection strategy based on foundations from linear optimal control theory, with the objective to maximize network resource utilization while meeting the constraints of the supported services. Computer simulations with MATLAB are carried out to validate the efficiency of the proposed mechanism. Based on the same principal we extend this model with a general analytical model describing the network selection procedures in heterogeneous network environments with multiple traffic classes. The proposed model was, then, used to derive a scalable mechanism based on control theory, which allows not only to assist in steering dynamically the traffic to the most appropriate network access but also helps in blocking the residual traffic dynamically when the network is congested by adjusting dynamically the access probabilities. We discuss the advantages of a seamless integration with the ANDSF. A prototype is also implemented into ns-3. Simulation results sort out that the proposed scheme prevents the network congestion and demonstrates the effectiveness of the controller design, which can maximize the network resources allocation by converging the network workload to the targeted network occupancy. Thereafter, we focus on enhancing the performance of DASH in a mobile network environment for the users which has one access network. We introduce a novel architecture based on MEC. The proposed adaptation mechanism, running as an MEC service, can modify the manifest files in real time, responding to network congestion and dynamic demand, thus driving clients towards selecting more appropriate quality/bitrate video representations. We have developed a virtualized testbed to run the experiment with our proposed scheme. The simulation results demonstrate its QoE benefits compared to traditional, purely client-driven, bitrate adaptation approaches since our scheme notably improves both on the achieved MOS and on fairness in the face of congestion. Finally, we extend the proposed the MEC-based architecture to support the DASH service in a multi-access heterogeneous network in order to maximize the QoE and fairness of mobile users. In this scenario, our scheme should help users select both video quality and access network and we formulate it as an optimization problem. This optimization problem can be solved by IBM CPLEX tool. However, this tool is time-consuming and not scalable. Therefore, we introduce a heuristic algorithm to make a sub-optimal solution with less complexity. Then we implement a testbed to conduct the experiment and the result demonstrates that our proposed algorithm notably can achieve similar performance on overall achieved QoE and fairness with much more time-saving compared to the IBM CPLEX tool.

Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled "Mobility and Radio Resource Management in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks" submitted by Xiaoshan Liu for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in October 2006 Future generation wireless communication systems are characterized by ubiquitous access and Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. They consist of IP-based heterogeneous wireless networks (HWN) with overlaid coverage to provide users with a broad range of access services. In a wireless communication system, mobility and radio resource management are essential system functions to support seamless global roaming. However, the functions in HWN systems are very different from those employed in traditional homogeneous wireless networks, and presents new challenges. First, the complexity and large dimension of an HWN system adds to the latency of signaling when signals traverse the component networks. When mobile users make handoffs in HWN, long handoff delay and heavy packet loss will be caused by this prolonged signaling exchange, seriously compromising QoS. Second, every component network is deployed following its own architecture and the characteristics of its particular technology. Therefore, the underlying radio resource management (RRM) functions need to be coordinated in admission control to improve users' experience and system performance. In this study, we propose methods in architecture, protocol and algorithms to solve the above problems in an HWN system. We first introduce a mobility management architecture with an Edge Mobility Agent (EMA) to improve the performance of handoffs between different networks. In the architecture, an EMA is introduced at the edge of the low-tier network to provide a transition area for handoff signaling exchange that effectively eliminates delay and packet loss during a vertical handoff. We also propose a Service Differentiated Handoff Protocol (SDHP) to handle handoffs between cells of the same network. In SDHP, we classify connections' QoS requirements into two classes and propose to use different handoff schemes to handle these connections to satisfy their different QoS requirements. With SDHP, we strike a balance between users' handoff experience and efficiency of radio resource utilization. To optimize radio resource utilization and access selection, we propose two joint admission control schemes to allocate connection requests to different component networks. In one scheme, the bandwidth to be allocated for each user is adaptive to the current resource utilization of every access network. A profit function is established to evaluate the profits gained from a handoff and the target network is selected accordingly. In another scheme, we formulate the joint admission control problem as a Semi- Markov Decision Process, and employ bandwidth adaptation to improve users' experience. We propose to use multi-agent system reinforcement learning to optimize SMDP. With this method, the system will learn an optimal policy from its experience that matches the characteristics of system capacity and user traffic, and maximizes a policy-based system reward. With the above proposals in architecture, protocol and algorithms, we provide a solution combining mobility and radio resource management and realize seamless global roaming with QoS support in HWN systems. Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic view of data services in heterogeneous wireless networks, from the perspectives of cause, governing rules, and impact of data’s mobility on such networks. Specifically, it covers application requirements break-down, network modeling, performance analysis and evaluation by examining mobile data dynamics that are particularly important to data service provisioning. Additionally, application prospects such as information dissemination, fog computing, Internet-of-Things and dynamic spectrum access are discussed on the basis of these dynamics. Theoretic analysis, example illustrations, and algorithms are also presented to provide a concise coverage of this important area of networking. Mobile data dynamics refers to the stochastic processes of information, geographical coverage and spectrum, which accompanies the movements of data across wireless networks. Owing to the challenge raised by a high level of network heterogeneity, and the innate requirement on scalability, knowledge on the evolution of mobile data dynamics is essential to the design and deployment of emerging data services and applications, such as Internet-of-Things, data/task offloading and edge-based machine learning/inference. This book is designed for researchers and advanced-level students in the field of wireless networking and edge computing, who seek to understand the models and evolutions of mobile data dynamics for future edge applications. Practitioners, who specialize in the design, operation and maintenance of edge computing systems will also want to purchase this book as a reference.

Book excerpt: Heterogeneous wireless network (HWN) technology has emerged in the next generation mobile networks, which enables mobile client (MC) to simultaneously communicate with multiple heterogeneous access networks for better quality of services (QoS) and lower service cost. By the context of conventional network protocols, separately and independently operating network interfaces cannot fully utilize the potential of a HWN. In this thesis, we model and analyze a HWN and system. The issues are identified as the multi-MAC management between MCs and access networks, and the multi-network (multi-NET) management between application servers and access networks. We propose a multi-MAC management scheme over multiple heterogeneous interface MACs to optimize multi-application performance with network selection and rate allocation for uplink traffic. We also propose a multi-NET management scheme for multi-user performance optimization in the downlink traffic, which is network-centric and distributes traffic into multiple access networks by supporting the inter-networking operations. Besides necessary optimization algorithms, procedures to implement our schemes are also provided.

Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth discussion on how to efficiently manage resources of heterogeneous wireless networks and how to design resource allocation algorithms to suit real world conditions. Efficiently managing resources of the networks is more crucial now, than ever before, to meet users’ rapidly increasing demand for higher data rates, better quality-of-service (QoS) and seamless coverage. Some of the techniques that can be incorporated within heterogeneous wireless networks to achieve this objective are interworking of the networks, user multi-homing and device-to-device (D2D) communication. Designing resource allocation algorithms to suit real world conditions is also important, as the algorithms should be deployable and perform well in real networks. For example, two of the conditions considered in this book are resource allocation intervals of different networks are different and small cell base stations have limited computational capacity. To address the first condition, resource allocation algorithms for interworking systems are designed to allocate resources of different networks at different time-scales. To address the second condition, resource allocation algorithms are designed to be able to run at cloud computing servers. More of such conditions, algorithms designed to suit these conditions, modeling techniques for various networks and performance analysis of the algorithms are discussed in the book. This book concludes with a discussion on the future research directions on the related fields of study. Advanced-level students focused on communication and networking will use this book as a study guide. Researchers and experts in the fields of networking, converged networks, small-cell networks, resource management, and interference management, as well as consultants working in network planning and optimization and managers, executives and network architects working in the networking industry will also find this book useful as a reference.

Book excerpt: Abstract Simulation of wireless networks is often the only available means for investigation and analysis of the network’s properties. In order for these simulations to produce meaningful results, not only the network infrastructure but also the wireless network users have to be modeled describing their relevant behavior. This thesis deals with mobility modeling for wireless ad hoc access network simulations. For these networks, mobility of users can be identified as one major factor influencing the performance of wireless networks. Properties of mobility models are analyzed and an assessment of their impact on network evaluation is made. The investigated models are analyzed in detailed computer simulations, and general properties are derived by analytical evaluation. Simulations of different models with different ad hoc access networks show the large impact of mobility models and their parameters. Finally, suggestions are made concerning the required detail in mobility modelling for the analyzed networks and applications. From the results, conclusions can be drawn on what kind of mobility model must be selected for which network simulation task. This is a decision that has to be made for every investigation using wireless network simulation.
