Book excerpt: We study how the migration from an old to a new technology is affected by the access price to the old technology. We show that both the incumbent and the regulator are willing to set a very high access price to accelerate consumers' migration to the new technology. When the quality of the old technology is exogenous and the entrant dominates investment in the new technology, the old technology is completely switched off in equilibrium, whereas the old technology persists when the incumbent dominates investment. When the incumbent can decide on an endogenous upgrade of the old technology, the migration to the new technology is slowed down, and the entrant might be foreclosed.

Book excerpt: After the initial breakthrough in the research phase of R&D a new product undergoes a process of change, improvement and adaptation to market conditions. We model the strategic behavior of firms in this development phase of R&D. We emphasize that a key dimension to this competition is the innovations that lead to product differentiation and quality improvement. In a duopoly model with a single adoption choice, we derive endogeneously the level and diversity of product innovations. We demonstrate the existence of equilibria in which one firm enters early with a low quality product while the other continues to develop the technology and eventually markets a high quality good. In such an equilibrium, no monopoly rent is dissipated and the later innovator makes more profits. Incumbent firms may well be the early innovators, contrary to the predictions of the hypothesis.

Swann begins with a concise account of the theories of quality innovation and quality choice. He discusses the byproducts of microelectronic technology, the measurement of computer systems and hence, product quality, and the most important issues in the economics of product design and production. He demonstrates that quality innovation in microprocessors can be described by a time series of price functions, an important preliminary for an econometric analysis of quality choice. The quality innovation strategies of individual microelectronics producers and the changing demand for their products are examined and described. As an alternative perspective on the analysis of quality demand, the author provides three case studies examining whether, from an engineering point of view, the quality of available of available components hampered the development of particular applications. These case studies provide a realistic understanding of the many issues that must be resolved before microelectronic innovations can be used effectively. In conclusion, Swann contends that the market incentive for quality innovation often appears well before the end-user is able to appreciate fully the true value of the innovation.
