Book excerpt: For the student of HEMA, this work is perhaps the single best broad introduction to the art of swordsmanship. The lessons in this book cover the two-handed longsword, Spanish rapier and dagger (the precursor to Filipino Martial Arts' Espada Y Daga), the use of broadsword and buckler (one handed sword and small shield), a chapter on the original cloak and dagger techniques (learn where that phrase really comes from) along with cloak and rapier, followed by a chapter on using twin rapiers, followed by a chapter on the transition between these earlier historical methods to "modern" (at the time) fencing, followed by a final chapter covering the 18th century and sword-disarming techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring period drawings and prints of swordplay, this book examines and compares three Elizabethan fencing manuals written in English before 1600: Giacomo Di Grassi’s His True Arte of Defense (1594), Vincentio Saviolo’s His Practice in Two Bookes (1595), and George Silver’s Paradoxes of Defence and Bref Instructions upon My Paradoxes of Defence (1599). More than a technical manual on swordplay, this book explores the influence of a new form of violence introduced into Elizabethan culture by the invention of the rapier. The authors examine the rapier’s influence on the various social classes, the clash between the traditional English fencing masters and those embracing the new style, the growing concern with unregulated dueling, and the frequent references to rapier play in the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. As producer Joseph Papp notes in his foreword, this is a book that "makes a difference in performance."

Book excerpt: In late Victorian England, even as the sword was being rendered useless on the battlefield, swordsmanship was experiencing a unique revival. Captain Alfred Hutton and Egerton Castle, both devoted fencers and amateur historians, led a systematic study and reconstruction of combat with all the weapons of the Elizabethan arsenal - the elegant rapier, deadly sword and buckler, and the massive two-handed sword. Their work found practical expression in classes, exhibitions, academic lectures and theatrical combat, for audiences as diverse as school children, soldiers and the Prince of Wales. Yet for all of their efforts, Hutton and Castle did not establish a tradition of historical swordsmanship that survived their own generation. Instead, their books and essays were largely forgotten until the second revival of ancient swordplay in the late 20th century, and today's researchers often view these early efforts with a cavalier or dismissive eye. In Ancient Swordplay: the Revival of Elizabethan Swordplay in Victorian England, 19th c martial arts scholar, theatrical fight director and martial artist Tony Wolf reexamines Hutton and Castle's work, both through their own words and those of their enthusiasts, students and critics. Rather than earnest but misguided amateur scholars, they are revealed to be the inventors of a systematic study and practice of lost fighting arts that has only been exceeded in recent years, worthy of being celebrated as the true pioneers in the field.

Book excerpt: This, the second of Hutton s books to be reprinted by Naval and Military Press (the other is Cold Steel: a practical treatise of the sabre) is extremely rare, for only 300 copies were printed. The author, ex-King s Dragoon Guards, was an acknowledged fencing expert, who made it his business to know the history of his sport as well as the practical application of it. Here he looks at the 15th to 16th centuries, and starts by looking at the two-handed sword. He continues with a history of the rapier and the dagger, the broadsword and the buckler, spending much time on a detailed history of both development and use of these weapons. He also looks at the practice of fighting with dagger and cloak and rapier and cloak, an almost balletic art much done in the fifteenth century. His next topic looks at the eighteenth century, after dealing with the transition period between swordplay and sport. The plates cover the various stages and movements of fencing, all of which are adapted from contemporary prints created by the masters of the art of the specific time. In all a very rewarding treatment of the art and its history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A ‘must have’ book for anyone who has an interest in edged weapons . . . Loades holds the reader’s full attention with each sword’s story that he tells.” —The Lone Star Book Review This magnificent book tells the story of the evolution of swords, how they were made, how they were used, and the people that used them. It doesn’t claim to give comprehensive coverage but instead takes certain surviving examples as landmarks on a fascinating journey through the history of swords. Each is selected because it can be linked to a specific individual, thus telling their story too and giving a human interest. So the journey starts with the sword of Tutankhamun and ends with the swords of J. E. B. Stuart and George Custer. Along the way we take in Henry V, Cromwell and Uesugi Kenshin, and there is the most detailed discussion you’ll find anywhere of all of George Washington’s swords. The chapters on these specific swords and swordsmen are alternated with more general chapters on the changing technical developments and fashions in swords and their use. The reader’s guide on this historical tour is Mike Loades. Mike has been handling swords most of his life, as a fight arranger, stuntman and historical weapons expert for TV and stage. As much as his profound knowledge of the subject, it is his lifelong passion for swords that comes through on every page. His fascinating text is supported by a lavish wealth of images, many previously unpublished and taken specifically for this book. “Superb . . . the most breathtaking coverage from the earliest days to modern times. Brilliant.” —Books Monthly

Book excerpt: In 1599, during the period when the Portuguese crown was united to the crowns of Castile and Aragon, a Portuguese master-at-arms called Domingo Luis Godinho wrote a manuscript in Spanish entitled Arte de Esgrima (The Art of Fencing). Although Godinho's live is largely a mystery and his text was never published, today his manuscript of utmost relevance in the study of Renaissance Iberian fencing, since it is the only complete treatise discovered so far describing the "e;Common"e; or "e;Vulgar"e; style of Iberian fencing, first documented in the 15th century, but by Godinho's day, displaced by the new system of La Verdadera Destreza. The work includes instructions for the single sword, a long-bladed, cut & thrust weapon taught alone and with the use of the shield, buckler, dagger, and cape, as well as paired with a second sword. Godinho's instructions also includes the longest known text on the use of the montante, or two-handed sword, a devastating weapon that was used by soldiers and body-guards, in duels and battlefields, in crowded streets and aboard galleys. Translator Tim Rivera provides a detailed introduction that explains Godinho's relationship to earlier masters of the "e;Common School"e; of swordsmanship, and a short primer on the various weapons, guards, parries, footwork and terminology of the tradition.
