Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a magazine? For decades, women's magazines were regularly published, print-bound guidebooks aimed at neatly defined segments of the female audience. Crisp pages, a well-composed visual aesthetic, an intimate tone, and a distinctive editorial voice were among the hallmarks of women's glossies up through the turn of this century. Yet amidst an era of convergent media technologies, participatory culture, and new demands from advertisers, questions about the identity of women's magazines have been cast up for reflection. Remake, Remodel: Women's Magazines in the Digital Age offers a unique glimpse inside the industry and reveals how executives and content creators are remaking their roles, their audiences, and their products at this critical historic juncture. Through in-depth interviews with women's magazine producers, an examination of hundreds of trade press reports, and in-person observations at industry summits, Brooke Erin Duffy chronicles a fascinating shift in print culture and technology from the magazine as object to the magazine as brand. She draws on these findings to contribute to timely debates about media producers' labor conditions, workplace hierarchies, and creative processes in light of transformed technologies and media economies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambivalent Desires: Representations of Modernity and Private Life in Colombia (1890s-1950s) is a literary and cultural study of the reception of modernity in Colombia. Unlike previous studies of Latin American modernization, which have usually focused on the public aspect of the process, this book discusses the intersection between modernity and the private sphere. It analyzes canonical and non-canonical works that reflect the existing ambivalence toward the modernizing project being implemented in the country at the time, and it discusses how the texts in question reinterpret, adapt, and even reject the ideology of modernity. The focus of the study is how the understanding of the relationship between modernity and private life relates to the project of constructing a modern nation, and the discontinuities and contradictions that appear in the process. The question of what modernity is, its implications for everyday life, and its desirability or undesirability as a new cultural paradigm were central issues in Colombian texts from the end of the nineteenth century through the first half of the twentieth. At stake was the definition of the nation's identity and the project of breaking away from the cultural patterns of the colonial past. Considering that the apparently peaceful process of modernization in Colombia was interrupted in the 1950s by the eruption of political violence across the country, this study situates itself on the eve of a crisis and asks how representations of modernity in texts from the period evidence the social fragmentation that may have led to it. The book begins with an analysis of the theme of the private collection in the work of JosZ Asunci-n Silva, and how it is used to propose a specific notion of personal and cultural identity. It continues with an analysis of the modernizing ideology of the popular magazine El GrOfico during the period of economic prosperity of the 1920s known as the 'Dance of the Millions,' focusing on the publication's advertisements and the section devoted to women and the home. Subsequently, the canonical writings of TomOs Rueda Vargas are analyzed in the context of the relation between autobiographical writing and public life, emphasizing the contradiction between the author's public liberalism and his private conservatism, and highlighting his critique of modern life. The works of previously neglected women writers Manuela Mallarino Isaacs, Juana SOnchez Lafaurie, and Fabiola Aguirre are studied in the context of women's relationship to modernity and their conflict between traditional roles that relegated them to the private sphere, and their desire to accept modern standards. The book concludes with an analysis of the novels of Ignacio G-mez DOvila, which have received scant attention to this date, as it discusses his critique of the upper classes' flight into the private and what the author sees as their alienation from a society on the verge of a crisis.

Book excerpt: (Global) Ads and Fads is an orchard of digitized magazine advertisements beginning with the golden age of media in the Fifties, through the polished horizons of the new wave 1980s. Like any great collection, Ads and Fads offers its highs and lows, with popular products and marketing misses in one large collection of hundreds of rarely seen printed media ads, flyers, and banners. Ads and Fads reads like a walkthrough in a national museum, guided by your own pace and engaged by your own memories or fascination. Beginning with ads promoting better Health and Beauty, the journey not only future-proofs many of these 'lost' ads, but it also provides a splash of eye-candy to contemporary mid-Century architects, kitsch collectors, and auto historians. From the simple small-business sketch to expensive graphic artistries, Ads and Fads is a self-guided review of some of the most humorous, profound, astute, and definitive ephemera ads from the mid-20th Century. This collection is an essential resource for illustrators, marketing majors, graphic artists, pickers, thrifters, and 'chipstorians.' Unlike the tattered, frayed magazines of which many of these ads were rescued, Ads and Fads is a practical 6 inch x 9 inch hardback, 164-page book packed with over 340 ads and offers little commentary for your own conceptual exploration into the past. Book excerpt: More than 450 American ad characters, industry icons, and product personalities hailing from the 1950s, '60s, and '70s pack the pages of this vibrant, vintage collection. The postwar economic boom launched a generation of charming, cheeky, and relentlessly cheerful critters and characters that found their way into our homes--and our hearts--in print, on television, and on packaging. Some took detours that reflected the times (Elsie the Cow was sent into outer space in 1958). Some were fashion victims who survived (remember hippy Hush Puppies, circa 1969?). And some are no longer with us (the Frito Bandito was finally brought to justice in 1971). These endearingly offbeat characters are as fresh and entertaining today as they were creatively inspired in decades past.

Book excerpt: This is a colorful collection of more than 200 classic advertisements, drawn from the British Library's rich collection of vintage ephemera. It includes colorful, amusing, and sometimes bizarre advertising from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This book reproduces for the first time dozens of adverts that were printed in fashion magazines and newspapers, or appeared as posters and trade cards. It offers a unique pictorial introduction to the history of print culture in Britain, and shows the deep roots of consumerism as well as the surprisingly familiar ways--catchy slogans, strong typography, and bright colors--in which advertisers have always fought for our attention. This illustrative sourcebook will inspire and entertain graphic designers, typographers, and anyone with an interest in Victorian and 20th-century print culture.
