This gives the effect of panelling at small expense. Care needs to be taken, however, in the selec tion of suitable mouldings. Often they are too deep and coarse. Floors can be of many kinds today. There is nothing more satisfactory than a floor of oak, laid in narrow lengths. Where deal boards exist they can either be stained or painted. A good penetrating stain should be used, and the surface then finished with wax polish. Linoleum is now to be obtained in excellent patterns. There are, for example, some which simulate parquet so closely that only a close examination reveals what they are. With linoleum in new houses, however, when used on ground floors, it is necessary to guard against dry rot. At least six months or a year should be allowed to pass before any boarded floor on the ground floor of a new house is covered with linoleum; for the spores of dry rot may be in the wood, and the tight covering of the floor with a material which prevents aeration may bring about just those conditions that foster the growth of the spores of dry rot.
