Book Synopsis The Philosophical Foundations of Management Thought by : Jean-Etienne Joullié
Download or read book The Philosophical Foundations of Management Thought written by Jean-Etienne Joullié and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book's premise is that the theories taught in management schools are based on unacknowledged philosophical perspectives that are significant not so much for what they explain, but for what they assume. Rarely made explicit, these perspectives cannot be reconciled, with the result that the study of management has been dominated by contradictions and internecine intellectual warfare. However, the ability critically to analyze these diverse perspectives is essential to practicing and aspiring managers if they are to evaluate expert opinion. Moreover, since management is primarily an exercise in communication, managing is impossible in the darkness of an imprecise language, in the absence of moral references, or in the senseless outline of a world without intellectual foundations. Managing is a prime example of applied philosophy.
Book Synopsis Is Philosophy Androcentric? by : Iddo Landau
Download or read book Is Philosophy Androcentric? written by Iddo Landau and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Is Philosophy Androcentric?, Iddo Landau contends that none of the arguments for viewing philosophy as pervasively androcentric ultimately stand up to rational scrutiny, while the ones that show it to be nonpervasively androcentric do not undermine it in the way that many critics have supposed. “Philosophy emerges, in almost all of its parts,” he concludes, “as human rather than male, and most parts and aspects of it need not be rejected or rewritten."

Book excerpt: Hypatia Washington is 22 years old; an unemployed widow, living on welfare, and estranged from her four-year old daughter, she is profoundly alienated from life-when she enrolls in a community college course in Philosophy thus beginning a profound journey of the mind and heart. She debates skeptics as well as Christian apologists about Evolution, Islam, Womanism, and God, while lecturing about ethics, science, consciousness, and the meaning of human history. She analyzes not only philosophers such as Russell, Rawls, Wittgenstein, and Sartre, but wrestles with such questions as: Which famous philosophers were racists? Was Heidegger a Nazi? Was Wittgenstein homosexual? Did Foucault know he had AIDS? Were any important philosophers women? Or black? Professor Washington is no "ivory tower" philosopher: she agonizes over the Rodney King trial and its aftermath; The O.J. Simpson verdict; the death of Tupac Shakur; the "Black Athena" controversy, and the publication of The Bell Curve-as well as the horrors of September 11, 2001, and its consequences. Join Hypatia, in her pursuit of the Amor Dei Intellectualis ("intellectual love of God").

Book Synopsis Critical Conversations in Philosophy of Education by : Wendy Kohli
Download or read book Critical Conversations in Philosophy of Education written by Wendy Kohli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Conversations in Philosophy of Education presents a series of conversations expressing many of the multiple voices that currently constitute the field of philosophy of education. Philosophy of education as a discipline has undergone several turns--the once marginal perspectives of the various feminisms, critical Marxism, and poststructuralist, postmodernist and cultural theory have gained ground alongside those of Anglo-analytic and pragmatic thought. Just as Western philosophers in general are coming to terms with the "end of philosophy" pronouncement implicit in postmodernism, so too are philosophers of education faced with similar challenges--challenges to long-held moral, political, aesthetic and epistemological commitments. The contributors take up these challenges through a dialogical structure, expressing differing positions without engaging in destructive critique.
Book Synopsis Where Drowned Things Live by : Susan Thistlethwaite
Download or read book Where Drowned Things Live written by Susan Thistlethwaite and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where Drowned Things Live describes the struggles of an untenured professor, Kristin Ginelli, as she tries to counsel a young woman student at her university and get her to reveal who is abusing her. Kristin fails, and the student is found drowned. As a former Chicago cop who quit the force over sexual harassment and the death of her detective husband in the line of duty, Kristin doggedly investigates this mysterious death, pushing back on foot-dragging by the university and obstruction by the Chicago police. Kristin is almost killed twice, but she does not give up on questioning why this student died. The novel is wholly fictional. What is not fiction, however, is that often students at colleges and universities around the country are vulnerable to sexual assault and abuse and they can receive very little help from their schools or from law enforcement. Today more than 300 schools of higher education are being investigated under Title IX for failures to prevent sexual assault and harassment on their campuses, and to deal fairly with reports.
Book Synopsis Hamilton and Philosophy by : Aaron Rabinowitz
Download or read book Hamilton and Philosophy written by Aaron Rabinowitz and published by Open Court Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-01 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hamilton and Philosophy, professional thinkers expose, examine, and ponder the deep and controversial implications of this runaway hit Broadway musical. One cluster of questions relates to the matter of historical accuracy in relation to entertainment. To what extent is Hamilton genuine history, or is it more a reflection of America today than in the eighteenth century? What happens when history becomes dramatic art, and is some falsification of history unavoidable? One point of view is that the real Alexander Hamilton was an outsider, and any objective approach to Hamilton has to be that of an outsider. Politics always involves a debate over who is on the margins and who is allowed into the center. Then there is the question of emphasizing Hamilton’s revolutionary aspect, when he was autocratic and not truly democratic. But this can be defended as presenting a contradictory personality in a unique historical moment. Hamilton’s character is also one that blends ambition, thirst for fame, and concern for his immortal legacy, with inability to see his own limitations, yet combined with devotion to honor and the cultivation of virtue. Hamilton’s evident ambition led him to be likened to Macbeth and Shakespearean tragedy can explain much of his life.
