Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Concord The points of chief interest in the historical and literary associations of Old Concord, may also be depended upon for its accuracy. Its historical mat ter I have drawn from the Concord histories of Lemuel Shattuck (1835) and Charles H. Walcott from the Concord Social Circle Memoirs, from the writings of Grindall Reynolds, and from the publications of the Concord Antiquarian Soci ety, chiefly those by the late George Tolman. For facts concerning Concord's literary notables I have drawn principally upon their own writings. Thebook also contains material from Concord tradition and family knowledge, not to be found in print. For help in verifying my statements, and for supply ing me with much matter previously unknown to me, I am much indebted to my neighbors Dr. Edward Waldo Emerson, Judge Prescott Keyes, and Mr. Adams Tolman. I am also greatly obliged for the courteous help of the librarians of the Concord Free Public Library, and I desire to express my thanks for permission to quote directly from the publications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Concord: Told by Concord Writers The Editor has no apology to make for the miscellaneous character of this volume. She has tried to depict briefly the history of Concord from the Plantation to the present time, as presented in the writings of its own inhabitants. Whether their residence in Concord has been long or short, it has been long enough for some part of the life of the town to be seen and reflected from their own angle of vision. The reader must himself focus the rays to see a true picture of this model New England town. Acknowledgement is due for kind assistance given in the preparation of the work to Mr. Frank B. Sanborn, Judge John S. Keyes, Mr. Frank Preston Stearns, Mrs. Daniel Lothrop, Mr. George Tolman, Mr. Winfred D. Hubbard, The Concord Social Circle, The Concord Antiquarian Society and the librarians of the Concord Public Library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences and Events in Concord's History Mr. Henry Robinson was mayor, and earnestly promoted by him while mayor and afterwards), for the creation of the City History commission, and in the act of incorporation of the commission which passed the state legislature on March 24, 1903; and to Mr. Hadley was assigned the most honorable and most laborious work of the commission, the General Narrative. This comprises sixteen chapters with 547 pages. It begins with the original occupation of the Merrimack valley, the grant of Penacook plantation, the transition to Mr. Amos the township of Rumford, and the organization of Concord, and it passes on through the Revolution, the events growing out of the Revolution, the War of 1812, the location of the capital at Concord, the general progress and the various political events preceding the adoption of the city charter in 1853, the advance of the city during the Civil War, and the events following the war, and it specially gives, attention to the closing decades from 1880 to 1900. No portion of Mr. Hadley's work appears to have been carelessly written. It is full and precise and graphic in narrative and description, and Concord will always owe to Mr. Hadley a debt of gratitude for his most faithful service and his most satisfactory accomplishment. In a most felicitous termination Mr. Hadley attaches great importance in the History of Concord to the period between 1880 and 1900. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concord and Its Points of Interest The history of Concord as a city dates from 1853, for it was on the tenth of March in that year that the city charter was adopted, it having been granted July 6, 1849, and rejected three times by popular vote, finally being accepted by a majority of 269 in a total vote of 1387. The history of the parish and town is of deep interest but does not properly come within the scope of the present work, which deals especially with the Concord of today and may be considered as a sort of appendix to the complete, authoritative and admirable history of Concord from 1725 to 1853, written by the Rev. Nathaniel Bouton and published in 1856. This is a standard work whose value steadily increases with the passage of time, and we wish here to express our obligations to it for many of the facts presented in the introductory sketch, which by summarizing Concord's development in the past may lead to a more complete understanding of her probable growth in the future. The "History of Merrimack and Belknap Counties," published by J. W. Lewis & Co., of Philadelphia, in 1885, has also been of great service by reason of its clear presentation of facts concerning Concord's later history, and it is to be regretted that the necessarily high cost of that handsomely and substantially gotten up volume of nearly 1000 pages should prevent a copy of it from being owned by every family in the large and important section of which it treats so interestingly and accurately. The proceedings of the annual meetings are given fully, accompanied by returns of the roads laid out by the select men, and altered or exchanged by vote of the town. Interesting and valuable letters and reports, incorporated in the records, are printed in the same relation in which they appear in the written records. The records of the early settlers of Concord are submitted to their descend ants in the hope that they will carefully peruse and profit by them. On the right is the Boston Public Garden, a tract of land comprising 24 1/4 acres, set aside by an act of the Legislature in 1859. It has been kept under a perfect state of cultivation and is a wonderful example of horticultural development. In the centre of the garden is an artificial pond and spanning the pond is the famous "Bridge of Size." In the garden are many pieces of statuary. On the right is the statue of Wendell Phillips, the great abolitionist, designed by French. Next on the right is that of Col. Thomas Cass, the work of Richard Brooks, Col. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concord Some of the Things to Be Seen There This point of conscience; I the question spurn; The kindliest bosom, exile shall make stern, And days of danger, nights of want and gloom, Brush from the sensibilities the bloom. But at any rate the land was bought and paid for, and its savage grantors were so well satisfied with their bargain, that in all the Indian wars which followed, Concord was almost the only town in the entire colony that never suffered from an Indian raid upon its territory; though, to be sure, one farm was raided and one man was killed in the New Grant, an addition made to the town some years after its settlement, and later set off again. It is commonly held that it was this peaceful mode of set tling its Indian question that gave to the town its name of Concord, a name unknown until that time as the designation of any town, although it has been stated by later inquirers that it was the name that had been given by Peter Bulkeley, long before, to his old English residence at Odell.
