Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Colony Days: Stories of the First Settlers and How Our Country Grew This little book is the second volume in the series of Uncle Sam's Old-time Stories. The first vol ume, The Coming of the White Men, dealt with discoveries and early settlements; this takes up the story where that left off and brings the history of our country about to the time of the Revolution. The brave men and women who were willing to face unknown dangers when they sought a free home in the American wilderness, found these dan gers very real and often terrible. At every turn there were foes to contend with, cold, hunger and sickness the lurking savages who looked upon them with Jealous eyes; the longing to see the familiar faces of the dear ones they had left behind and the loved scenes of their childhood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Lebaron and His Daughter: A Story of the Old Colony It is with some hesitation that I offer to the public this story of Doctor LeBaron, including, as it does, so many other of the Old Colony chronicles; and this, for the trite old reason that truth is stranger than fiction, and therefore more incredible. It is these incredible truths, however, that give its color to the folk-lore of any given epoch, and every student of our country's early history has discovered that our forefathers lived quite as intensely, if not as scientifically, as we do. They had, to be sure, no railway accidents, steamboat explosions, or "tramp-wire" catastrophes, but they supped full of horrors in the way of witchcraft, cursing, demoniacal possession, murder, lawless love, and broken hearts; in fact, found in their own surroundings all that vital stimulus which we are apt to count as outgrowth of our advanced civilization. The story of Mother Crewe's curse, with its results, is substantially true, and the scene depicted in chapter xliv. is literally so. The tragedy embodied in chapter xxiv. is also matter of history, and its veracity must apologize for its horror. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days of the Colonists The exploring party was following the river, which Smith reckoned by his compass to be hereabouts more or less parallel to the James. The weather was mild and delicate, with no sign of winter, and he meant to keep on somehow, afoot or afloat, until he found that corn. When the shallop, a sloop-rigged craft of about twelve tons, could go no further, he could take the two Indians and two white companions and proceed by canoe. This he presently did, leaving the rest to guard the sailing vessel where it lay at anchor. A while after the canoe disappeared those who te mained thought they caught a glimpse Of shadowy figures flitting in the same direction through the forest, though the woodlands were as silent as the creeping waters. Then they fancied that far away they heard shots and a cry, but nothing more occurred, nor did any message or Sign come from their leader. At last they gave up hope and went back to Jamestown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days and Deeds: A Hundred Years Ago The large brown house on the hill was the jolliest place to Visit that Roger knew anything about. To be sure, there were no children to play with. Baby Alice was not old enough to do much more than sleep or cry, and of course she could not know what a pleasant playmate her big, merry grandfather could be. But Roger knew, though Colonel Davenport was not his grandfather, only his great aunt's husband, and not really a bit related. Still, no grand father could make a boy have a better time; and when, one May morning, Mrs. Saybrook took her son for a month's Visit at the big house, Roger had a right to be the happiest child in the whole Connecticut colony. One thing, however, seemed hard. Colonel Davenport might not be at home very much, for he belonged that year to the Connecticut legislature. It was not so easy to go from Hart ford to Stamford as it is now, and the colonel did not try to get home Often, although some times he would come on Friday or Saturday and spend Sunday with his family. Indeed, he was expected the very week when Roger and his mother began their visit; and with him would come Governor Trumbull and three or four other men who were the colonel's close friends. The people at the big house needed Roger's mother to help get ready for so many guests; they needed a little boy, too, who could run on errands and do all the things that the colonel's own boys had done years before. On Friday afternoon, after three days of run ning and waiting on the little boy's part, every thing was ready for the visitors. Roger had not wasted a minute that day. Long before break fast he had thrown corn to the hungry hens, had led Dobbin and Dolly to the spring, and had helped Jonas, the hired man, to milk the cows. He did not really do any milking himself, but he helped Jonas wonderfully, for he could carry the milking stool and the empty pails. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Nevin: An Historical Narrative of the Early Days of the New England Colony of Iowa The writer of this short story OF nevin has herein presented an account of facts and events occurring in the attempt to establish in Iowa a new Boston, together with brief biographic notes of the most prominent actors. The sources of information have been his own pri vate journals, largely supplemented from the memories of himself and his wife; also from the memories and records of other survivors of the old colony. For its preparation, he has no apology to make. The work was undertaken at the suggestion of a few remaining friends and pioneers of the place; and, although attended with considerable labor, it has been a pleasant diversion.
