Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the third edition of A Grammar of Akkadian, changes have been made in the section on the nom i n al morpheme -ån (§20.2) and the sections on the meaning of the D stem (§24.3) and the Gt stem (§33.1(b)); these revisions reflect recent scholarship in Akkadian grammar. Other changes include minor revisions in wording in the presentation of the grammar in a few other sections; a number of new notes to some of the readings; additions to the glosses of a small number of words in the lesson vocabularies (and the Glossary and English–Akkadian word list); and updates of the resources available for the study of Akkadian, and of the bibliography. A new appendix (F) has been added, giving Hebrew and other Semitic cognates of the Akkadian words in the lesson vocabularies. The pagination of the first and second editions has for the most part been retained, apart from the insertion of the new appendix and a few minor deviations elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basing himself on a careful study of all hitherto published (and some unpublished) Old-Babylonian literary texts - roughly 270 different compositions of all literary genres - Dr. Wasserman systematically leads the reader to a number of insightful conclusions regarding distinctive style and outstanding features of the Old-Babylonian literary system (as opposed to everyday texts, such as letters). The three opening chapters - Hendiadys, Tamyīz, and Damqam-īnim - are mainly concerned with syntax, but also connections with inalienability, a semantic issue. Chapter four and five, Merismus and Simile, focus on semantics (though also including word order). The last chapter, Rhyming Couplets, is fully devoted to form, with elaborations on such semantic problems as performative speech acts. The concluding pages delineate the contours of the Old-Babylonian literary system; genres and 'genre-families', the dichotomy between oral and written traditions, and the distinction between learned and popular literature. With a detailed catalogue of all known literary Old-Babylonian compositions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines conditional structures in Old Babylonian from a linguistic point of view, drawing on a corpus of letters, law collections, and omens. All of the conditional patterns are provided with a syntactic characterization, so that each conditional sequence is differentiated from all other potential sequences. The volume includes detailed discussion about the values of various verbal and other predicative forms in the conditional structures occurring in the corpus, the differences between superficially similar conditional patterns, and the functions of the various conditional patterns. Many traditionally difficult points are treated and given suitable solutions. The concluding sections of each chapter include linguistic glosses and more general discussions that provide linguistic typologists a window onto the conditional system of Old Babylonian.

Book excerpt: This book is meant as an aid to the reading and interpretation of Old Assyrian texts for students who are already familiar with Akkadian, in particular with Old Babylonian. Accordingly, it focuses on those aspects in which Old Assyrian grammar and lexicon are different from Babylonian and on the specific problems that Old Assyrian texts might pose to students of Babylonian. It is essentially a spin-off from N.J.C. Kouwenberg's long-standing work on the grammar of Old Assyrian, which is reflected in "A Grammar of Old Assyrian" (Leiden: Brill, 2017). It comprises a complete grammar (with a focus on phonology and morphology, including a sign list and extensive paradigms), a glossary (with a focus on Old Assyrian peculiarities), and a selection of sample editions of texts. The introduction is supposed to make the Old Assyrian texts more accessible to anyone interested, and thus contribute to an increase in the study of the archives of the Assyrian merchants in Anatolia. They acquaint us not only with one of the oldest large corpora of any Semitic language, but also with aspects of Ancient Near Eastern history, economy and society that are in many respects unique.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abridged Grammars of the Languages of the Cuneiform Inscriptions: Containing I.-A Sumero-Akkadian Grammar, II.-An Assyro-Babylonian Grammar, III.-A Vannic Grammar, IV.-A Medic Grammar, V.-An Old Persian Grammar I must also acknowledge the help I have received from my friend Mr. Pinches, of the British Museum, who pointed out to me many things which might have escaped my atten tion, and who placed at my disposal his vast acquaintance with the texts. If the student wish for a syllabary, I cannot but recommend that of Professor Sayce, still the best; but Mr. Pinches is preparing a very complete one, in which will be given the characters of various epochs and of all the different languages.
