Mit diesem Ansatz will er u. a. verstehen, warum es gerade im Okzident zu einer solchen Kulmination von Rationalisierungsprozessen kam, wie sie im Kapitalismus, in der modernen Bürokratie, im parlamentarischen Regierungsmodell oder auch in der harmonischen Musik vorliegt. Zu diesem Zweck entwickelt Weber eine feingliedrige Typologie sozialer Verbände und Handlungsformen. Von zentraler Bedeutung ist seine Herrschaftssoziologie, worin er die drei reinen Typen legitimer Herrschaft entwickelt: rationale Herrschaft gründet auf dem Glauben an die Legalität > gesatzter Ordnungen“, traditionale Herrschaft auf dem Glauben an die Heiligkeit althergebrachter Traditionen, und charismatische Herrschaft auf dem Glauben an die außeralltäglichen Qualitäten einer Person oder Ordnung. Mit den sorgfältig definierten soziologischen Kategorien konstruiert Weber idealtypische Vergesellschaftungsformen (wie den > Feudalismus“, die > Parteien“ oder die > Gemeinde“), und verwendet ein umfangreiches kulturvergleichendes historisches Material zur Illustration dieser Typen; die Idealtypen ihrerseits dienen zur kontrastiven Veranschaulichung der historisch vorgefundenen Formen. Weber vertieft so seine schon früher veröffentlichte These, nach welcher die protestantische Wirtschaftsethik mit ihrem Hang zur Askese für den okzidentalen Rationalisierungsschub verantwortlich war.

Book excerpt: While most people are familiar with The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, few know that during the last decade of his life Max Weber (1864-1920) also tried to develop a new way of analyzing economic phenomena, which he termed "economic sociology." Indeed, this effort occupies the central place in Weber's thought during the years just before his death. Richard Swedberg here offers a critical presentation and the first major study of this fascinating part of Weber's work. This book shows how Weber laid a solid theoretical foundation for economic sociology and developed a series of new and highly evocative concepts. He not only investigated economic phenomena but also linked them clearly with political, legal, and religious phenomena. Swedberg also demonstrates that Weber's approach to economic sociology addresses a major problem that has haunted economic analysis since the nineteenth century: how to effectively unite an interest-driven type of analysis (popular with economists) with a social one (of course preferred by sociologists). Exploring Weber's views of the economy and how he viewed its relationship to politics, law, and religion, Swedberg furthermore discusses similarities and differences between Weber's economic sociology and present-day thinking on the same topic. Book excerpt: Nobel laureate Sir John Hicks has with good reason called the third quarter of the 1 twentieth century the age of Keynes • Sir John nevertheless diagnosed a crisis of Keynesian economics even before this period had expired. But if only a few gifted scholars had foreseen the crisis of Keynesian economics before 1975, this year at least marked the ultimate disenchantment of Keynesian economics. Keynesian economic policy proved ineffective to cope with the economic challenges of the late seventies: unemployment, inflation, and stagnation of economic growth. Alarmed governments resorted to more and more intense remedies out of the Keynesian box of Pandora. But all they got was the creation of additional difficulties, aggravating the situation still more: soaring public debt, extraordinary balance-of-payments deficits, and economic instability. It had been argued until quite recently that capi talism could have survived only "in the oxygen tent of government deficit spend 2 ing ". But it has become patent since the mid-seventies that it is first and foremost the Keynesian oxygen tent that has produced the present embarrassment of capital ist economies. The present economic malaise in nearly all Western countries has accordingly led to considerable unrest in the economics profession. Somewhat reminiscent of the thirties, a feverish search for alternatives to the prevailing but insufficient econ omic doctrine has begun. Among the candidates to be screened, Schumpeterian economics takes a prominent place.
