Book Synopsis Catholics in Independent Indonesia: 1945-2010 by : Karel Steenbrink

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholics in Independent Indonesia: 1945-2010 concludes Steenbrink’s three volume historical account of Catholicism in Indonesia with a detailed report of the survival and growth of this minority religion in Muslim Indonesia since its independence in 1945. Colonial Catholicism survived in the independent Republic of Indonesia during the nationalist Sukarno regime (1945-1965) and regained a new dynamic during the general religious revival that was part of the New Order of Soeharto after 1965. From a Dutch-inspired institution it became a fully Indonesian steered community with a modern and international character. The second half of the book will deal with the different regional developments in this vast country.
Book Synopsis Cosmogony and Creation in Balinese Tradition by : C Hooykaas
Download or read book Cosmogony and Creation in Balinese Tradition written by C Hooykaas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1974 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 1,000 years ago in India there lived five ascetics, Pasupata's, who went around naked, with ungroomed hair. The fame of their holiness spread to Java and Bali, where they became heavenly seers, aspects both of Shiva and Buddha, celestial gods even, and as such connected with the creation. Classificatory thought classes them with a man's four older brothers: amniotic fluid, blood, vernix caseosa, and the placenta, the helpers or enemies par excellence of each and every person, whether layman or priest. This book brings together much material, from old to very modern, which indicates the extent to which these ideas were, and still are, living reality for the Balinese. The most important texts, both prose and poetry, and the comparison of many manuscripts published here for the first time, form the body of this book.

Book Synopsis The Balinese People by : Gordon D. Jensen
Download or read book The Balinese People written by Gordon D. Jensen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published exactly fifty years after Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead's Balinese Character (which still stands as the standard reference on Balinese personality and culture), this new study of the Balinese people -- a collaboration between a Western psychiatrist with wide experience ofBalinese culture and mental health and a Western-trained Balinese psychiatrist steeped in the local culture -- is unable to support the majority of Bateson and Mead's interpretations and conclusions and finds their basic assumptions inherently flawed. The study concludes that their book presents aninaccurate and misleading characterization of the Balinese as they were fifty years ago. In addition to this critique, the authors present their alternative formulations of psychosocial aspects of Balinese culture, their aim being to establish a more correct and valid portrayal of the life of the Balinese.
