Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio Archaeological and Historical Publications, Vol. 5 The Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society herewith presents to its members and patrons Volume V of its publications. We are justified in saying, that it is the most valuable contribution to the historical literature of Ohio yet published by the Society. It contains material never before made accessible to the public, and this material has been gathered and placed in logical and intelligible form by gentlemen thoroughly competent to do this work. Mr. D. J. Ryan, Secretary of the State of Ohio, for the years 1888-1892, has been a close student of the events pertaining to our state, has written "A History of Ohio" - (1888) - and has contributed to the press many articles upon our state's history. In the chapters entitled "From Charter to Constitution," Mr. Ryan has prepared what may be called an abstract of the title to the territory that now constitutes the State of Ohio. He has produced in their order, copies of the documents establishing the chain of possession and transfer from the original colonial grant (1606) of the English crown to the state Constitutional Convention of 1802 and the act of Congress of 1803 recognizing the State of Ohio. The disputes as to the territorial boundaries of the state were treated in the last volume (IV) of the Society, published January, 1896. The article by Mr. J. F. Laning, member of the State Senate from Huron County, appropriately supplements the one by Mr. Ryan. Mr Laning is the author of "Ohio Civics," "Law for Ohio Schools," "The Growth and History of Ohio," etc. His paper on the evolution of the counties or gradual division and re-division of the state into counties, was especially prepared for our Society. Mr. Laning was unable to continue the article to the present date in time for the issuing of this volume. The completion of the article will appear in a subsequent publication of the Society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio Archaeological and Historical Publications, 1919, Vol. 28We believe Mr. Giddings to be a sincere man; we know him to be an able and eloquent man. The odium which attaches itself to the peculiar opinion he entertains has kept him down from that position in the House which, under other circumstances, he would have undoubtedly have occupied. He is called a demagogue'; with what truth, the country will judge.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio Archaeological and Historical Publications, 1887, Vol. 25 The section of country investigated in this paper under the name of The Ohio Valley includes Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia Southern Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois; and Kentucky and Tennessee. In West Virginia in Southern Indiana and Illinois there were no schools for the higher education of women up to 1840. It IS true early m 1840, in Indiana there Were two schools started for the higher education of women, - the 'rockville Female Seminary on January 31, 18-40, and the Craw fordsville Female Institute on February 24, 1840, but they will not be treated in this paper. Neither will we discuss Jackson ville, Illinois, as it is outside of the boundary set for this treatise, although it was a great educational center, for the 'beechers had found their way thither. In 1830, or perhaps even before that time, good female academies had been started in that city. Nor can we take the time here to include the female academies in Dayton, Ohio, or that vicinity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio Archæological and Historical Publications, 1913, Vol. 22 North America, on the contrary, has ever maintained one line of advance, one direction of progress - from the East to the West. Hold Westward, Pilot cried the persistent Columbus, and in that con fident' command he gave the watchword for four hundred years of North American advance. Westward the course of empire takes its way said the equally persistent Bishop Berkeley in his missionary vision of christianizing the heathen in the new world. Westward lies the domain of England said the ambitious Governor Spottswood, of Virginia, in attempting to establish the claim of his king to the Trans Alleghenian lands. Go West, young man, said Horace Greeley, the sage of the New York Tribune, in attempting to find a remedy for crowded conditions and social unrest in the settled Eastern States. Our manifest destiny is from the Atlantic to the Pacific said William Henry Seward, in calling up the vision of the Western expansion, which gave to our domain, eventually, both Oregon and Alaska.
