Book excerpt: ELF researchers have been describing the dynamic and fluid ways in which multilingual speakers shape English in transcultural communication for more than two decades now. While this work seriously challenges traditional, static, and prejudiced views of English, the diverse and variable nature of its uses and users continues to be undermined in many EFL programs around the world. This is also the case in many Latin American contexts, which have been described as fertile ground for native-speaker ideology, but where the body of ELF literature is still scarce when compared to Asian and European settings. This book is the first to bring together a series of empirical studies on the implications of ELF perspectives for communicative, educational, and policy-making practices across different Latin American countries. It not only explores how ELF perspectives can inform students and educators in these settings, but also how locally emerging voices, experiences, and research traditions can help expand ELF theorising as well. The volume generates new opportunities for dialogue and global collaboration between researchers and practitioners interested in ELF studies as a critical approach to English language use and education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection celebrates the work of Paulo Freire by assembling transnational perspectives on Freirean-based educational models that reconsider and reimagine language and literacy instruction, especially for multilingual learners. Offering an international and comparative overview of Freire’s theories and critical pedagogies in relation to multilingualism, this volume presents innovative analyses and applications of theories and methods and features case studies in public schools, after-school and community literacy programs, and grassroots activism. Part I features chapters that expand on Freire’s concepts and ideas, including critical literacies, critical consciousness, and liberatory teaching principles. Part II features chapters that discuss empirical analyses from applied research studies that draw from these philosophical concepts, making important connections to key topics on supporting students, curriculum development, and teaching. Ideal for students and scholars in language education, bilingual/multilingual methods, and sociology of education, the volume informs teacher knowledge and practice. In offering alternative paradigms to our dominant, homogenized monolingual status quo, the chapters present a shared vision of what multilingual literacy can offer students and how it can transform educational spaces into sites of imagination, creativity, and hope.

Book excerpt: This book describes and analyses experiences of teaching and learning language, culture and literature based on telecollaboration, an approach that creates interactions between groups of learners from different countries through the integration of a series of virtual and intercultural collaborative tasks to the curricula of undergraduate and graduate courses. The experiences analyzed in this volume come from two telecollaborative projects developed by the São Paulo State University (UNESP), in Brazil, with universities from other countries: the Brazilian Virtual Exchange (BRaVE) Program and the Teletandem Brasil Project. The BRaVE Program aims at fostering an online collaborative learning modality that promotes intercultural contact and the exchange of ideas by connecting Brazilian undergraduate or graduate students with students from different higher education institutions around the world. The Teletandem Brasil Project is based on a mode of telecollaboration (teletandem) that creates a virtual, collaborative and autonomous context for learning foreign languages in which two students help each other to learn their own languages or a language of proficiency. They do so by using the text, voice and webcam image resources, and by adopting the three principles of tandem learning: autonomy, reciprocity, and separate use of both languages. Language, Culture and Literature in Telecollaboration Contexts will be of interest to both educational researchers and teachers as it presents, on the one hand, an innovative tool to promote the democratization of foreign language learning; and, on the other hand, discusses how telecollaborative projects can contribute to the training of language and literature teachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stimulating volume provides fresh perspectives on choice, a key notion in systemic functional linguistics. Bringing together a global team of well-established and up-and-coming systemic functional linguists, it shows how the different senses of choice as process and as product are interdependent, and how they operate at all levels of language. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, it covers a range of linguistic viewpoints, informed by evolutionary theory, psychology, sociology and neuroscience, to produce a complex but unifying account of the issues. This book offers a critical examination of choice and is ideal for students and researchers working in all areas of functional linguistics as well as cognitive linguistics, second-language acquisition, neurolinguistics and sociolinguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book engages with English in globalization, re-examining and re-interpreting the contemporary contexts of its acquisition and use. The chapters contained in this book weave together four inter-related themes that define the role of English in the global context: the `centrality of structure', `relationships of interdependence', `social constructions of difference' and `reproduction of inequality'. These themes enable the authors to draw attention to the dynamics of the contemporary realities of the `English-speaking' and `English-using' nations, especially as they compete for cultural, social, economic and symbolic capital in global networks. In engaging World Englishes with the sociolinguistics of globalization, the authors raise some fundamental questions about the status, structure, and functions of World Englishes. "What roles are English and World Englishes playing in globalization? What effect is globalization having on English and World Englishes? What effect is globalization having on other languages? Anyone interested in exploring these crucial questions will find this book a most helpful and stimulating companion. The editors have assembled an appropriately diverse all-star cast of contributors, each of whom approaches the topic from a refreshingly innovative standpoint To paraphrase OmoniyVspoem which opens the book, readers will learn to `waltz, salsa and lion-dance' (and hip-hop) their way through the complex cultural and linguistic steps of globalization."Andy Kirkpatrick, Hong Kong Institute of Education

Book excerpt: This book presents six related studies that shed light on hateful speech, both verbal and multisemiotic, in a postcolonial setting relevant to countries of the Global South, such as Brazil. It offers a body of rich empirical analysis of linguistic, discursive and political-ideological data. Analytical results show how online and offline attacks and related forms of resistance occur and how they involve a complex tangle of national and international flows, intersecting and re-twining themes, narratives, and images in the public arena. Thereby, the book provides insights into how disruptive global flows fuse and transform local flows into tangled and fluid glocal issues, as shown in the sexist and misogynist violence that permeates political-ideological struggles in contemporary Brazil and beyond.

This book focuses on the increasing presence of cosmetic multilingualism in prize-winning fiction, making a case for an emerging transparent-turn in which momentary multilingualism works in the service of long-term monolingualism.
