Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island of Bali's sensational image was created by the tourists, artists, and scholars who visited the tiny nation between the two world wars. A Dutch colony from 1908, Bali was a source of revenue for the Dutch government, which began to develop its image as the ultimate vacation spot. The tourism industry spread the idea of Bali as a paradise in which noble, happy, spiritual Balinese--all prodigiously creative artists--lived in innocence. Sensual images of beautiful people on an enchanted isle unspoiled by modernity predominated. Bali also acquired a reputation as a homosexual paradise. A host of books and articles fed these images of Bali until it evolved into one of the most romantic stops on the tourist itinerary. The Balinese people, however, made little profit from the tourist traffic. This history of the development of tourism in Bali stretches from the Dutch occupation in 1906 to the Japanese occupation in 1942. After exhaustive research in published records and in unpublished letters, diaries, and oral histories left by many of the American and European visitors to the island as well as the Balinese residents, the author explores the reasons for Bali's popularity among Westerners and their effects on the native culture.

Book excerpt: ANGKOR OBSERVED consists of a selection of early travellers' impressions of the Khmer empire's ancient, 12th-century capital and the legends that inspired the majestic stone temples of Angkor, which were described by a visitor in the 1920s as 'the most impressive sight in the world of edifices'. The work brings to the reader out-of-print impressions of early western travellers, including tales and legends based on the oral tradtition, published for the first time. Rooney, an art historian specialising in Southeast Asia who has made over fifty trips to Angkor since it reopened in 1991 not only offers luminous insight to the temples, and suggested itineraries, but also her expertise on the geography, history, religion art and architecture of Angkor. This guidebook will be a fascinating companion to the traveller and armchair traveller. It will be of interest to those who have travelled there and are inspired to explore further.

This book was released on 1978-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic behavior is governed by two major sets of boundary conditions: environmental and technological factors on the one hand, and conditions of social organization on the other hand. Indeed, social scientists are often particularly interested in the framework of exchange relationships: exchange of goods, services, personnel, and information. Economic exchanges lend concrete manifestations to social relations that themselves may transcend the economic realm and that otherwise are often difficult to trace. Yet in social science research in Southeast Asia, the area of economic studies has lagged behind, despite the great study potential represented by the tremendous diversity of its physical and human environment. Economic Exchange and Social Interaction in Southeast Asia attempts to take advantage of that opportunity. As a number of the contributions to this volume show, many if not most of the systems organized on very different levels of integration interact with each other. Taken as a whole, they provide evidence of the incredible diversity of economic and social systems that may be investigated in Southeast Asia.
