Book excerpt: An expert explains how the conventional wisdom about decision making can get us into trouble—and why experience can’t be replaced by rules, procedures, or analytical methods In making decisions, when should we go with our gut and when should we try to analyze every option? When should we use our intuition and when should we rely on logic and statistics? Most of us would probably agree that for important decisions, we should follow certain guidelines—gather as much information as possible, compare the options, pin down the goals before getting started. But in practice we make some of our best decisions by adapting to circumstances rather than blindly following procedures. In Streetlights and Shadows, Gary Klein debunks the conventional wisdom about how to make decisions. He takes ten commonly accepted claims about decision making and shows that they are better suited for the laboratory than for life. The standard advice works well when everything is clear, but the tough decisions involve shadowy conditions of complexity and ambiguity. Gathering masses of information, for example, works if the information is accurate and complete—but that doesn't often happen in the real world. (Think about the careful risk calculations that led to the downfall of the Wall Street investment houses.) Klein offers more realistic ideas about how to make decisions in real-life settings. He provides many examples—ranging from airline pilots and weather forecasters to sports announcers and Captain Jack Aubrey in Patrick O’Brian’s Master and Commander novels—to make his point. All these decision makers saw things that others didn’t. They used their expertise to pick up cues and to discern patterns and trends. We can make better decisions, Klein tells us, if we are prepared for complexity and ambiguity and if we will stop expecting the data to tell us everything. “I know of no one who combines theory and observation—intellectual rigor and painstaking observation of the real world—so brilliantly and gracefully as Gary Klein.” —Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers and Blink

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back then you played hardTill The Streetlights Came On. It was a time when chores were plentiful and toys were simple; when bad attitudes weren't treated with a prescription—you just beat the kid good. Video games and shopping malls didn't exist, and hands got dirty in backyards and vacant lots. Such was the life of Stevie, a boy addicted to play. Whether being burned at the stake as a cowboy or escaping a Nazi POW camp, Stevie's life is one adventure after another—often comical, but always filled with spiritual consequence. Or at least that's the way his guardian, Uncle Harry, sees it. Whether facing the 'green mile' to pick out his own switch, being consigned to dreaded 'miscellaneous chores,' or obediently struggling to follow the complexities of how questioning the intelligence (or lack there of) of cats relates to the reality of God, Stevie knows he can always rely on Uncle Harry to provide answers—whether he can understand them or not—and look after his immortal soul. Capturing the waywardness of youth, and all the hilarity inherent in young boys and their crackbrained schemes, author Stephen Langdon's stories will keep you reading till the streetlights come on.

Or when a phone book doubled as a booster chair, and putting baseball cards in the spokes of your bicycle tires was the coolest thing ever? When the Streetlights Came On, by comedian Kevin Jordan is a fun look back on a time when you knew the difference between your school clothes and your play clothes, respect was a given and kids played outside...all day, until the street lights came on!

Book excerpt: The Jewelry Recipe Book takes materials available at large craft stores (as well as specialty shops and artisan shops on Etsy)—beads, shrink plastic, leather, lace, pearls, sequins, polymer clay, yarn, and pinecones, to name a few—and transforms them into one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. Each of the 35 mini chapters organized by material consists of three projects and three skill levels, adding up to more than 100 stunning pieces that could easily be found for sale at Urban Outfitters or Anthropologie. Every piece is beautifully photographed, as are the majority of how-to steps, and the information is presented in an easy-to-follow way, like a recipe. The book also includes an overview of simple jewelry-making techniques and tips, with best practices for how to work with various materials; how to wear jewelry; and how to work with design elements that include color, scale, and shape.

They may seem commonplace, repetitive, simple structures seen spaced along every street. They may seem mundane, more remarkable in their absence than in their presence. But have you ever stopped to think about where they came from and what life must have been like before them? Has it ever occurred to you what a massive undertaking it must have been to go from no streetlights whatsoever to their present ubiquity? Robert Mulero is obsessed with streetlights, specifically those in New York City, the metropolis where streetlights, first gas and then electric, rose to prominence before spreading to every corner of the United States. The history contained in this book is two-fold. First, you will learn of the rise and evolution of public electricity in the United States, with the spread of street lighting at its center. Second, you'll receive a crash-course in the history of streetlight design, complete with historical photos and sketches. By the end, you'll never look at that "simple" streetlight in front of your house the same way again.

Book excerpt: An enchanting look at the heavens that unlocks the sky's mysteries and celebrates the beauty of the universe. No matter where we travel on Earth, the sky is the one great constant, bearing extraordinary colors and images in every kind of weather. Modern astronomy has revealed many secrets of the sky, and now the most intriguing ones have been distilled for a popular audience. With illustrations and engaging text, The Turtle and the Stars brings stargazers face-to-face with facts and lore. Topics include: What color is the atmosphere of Mars, and might it someday appear as blue as ours? How does the Milky Way cast shadows? Why is it that we never see the sunset as it's actually occurring? Earthly questions range from why the Taj Mahal glimmers when you gaze up at it to why the top of the Empire State Building travels farther than its lower floors each day. With contagious enthusiasm, Arthur Upgren also invites us to contemplate the natural beauty of the universe through recollecting scenes such as a leatherback turtle depositing her eggs under a sky lit only by Venus, or witnessing a total solar eclipse in Venezuela. A treasure trove of facts sprinkled with references to history, literature, film, and music, this is the ultimate tour for armchair astronomers and naturalists alike.

He grew-up in the late 50's with twin sisters, a year younger than himself, and had one good friend to accompany him on the journey from childhood to adolescence. But growing-up is hard, especially for a kid! A first kiss or life's most embarrassing moment-two entirely different events I assure you-become monumental moments when viewed through the eyes of a kid. This book is a collection of such stories, all of which are true, that define one such life. But in a way they define all of us. It's about the feelings attached to the experiences of growing-up and one kid's attempt to make sense of the world around him. When the Street Lights Come On is about going home to a place in the heart that's warm and familiar. It's a book for kids about to embark on the journey called "growing-up" and for everyone who's already been initiated. In the end you'll be reminded that sometimes just showing up for the game of life can be the bravest thing a kid can do.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author Larry Goldsmith has created a story of a morally strong-willed woman much like the biblical character Joseph in that she survives her fateful situation to become a heroine. Hanna is a coming-of-age college student who must face a life-threatening situation. Treachery and deceit become the recipe for a good romance mystery. Mama’s husband enters a Chicago area hospital for routine medical tests and is allegedly killed by Hanna’s father due to medical malpractice. Stricken with grief, the widow plans revenge against the doctor who killed her husband. While murder is not on the menu, Mama devises a plan to cause the doctor to feel the pain of losing a loved one. She plans to take her revenge on an unsuspecting Hanna. Like Joseph in the Bible, Hanna not only survives being in a strange and foreign environment but because of her integrity is elevated to a position of a trusted confidant. In the end, Hanna finds the life that she desires and becomes the master of her own fate. The reader will discover that there is more than one payback in the story. There are the planned paybacks and ones created by fate. There is a lesson to be learned as the characters forgive those who wronged them, and in doing so, begin to move forward living their lives again. Author’s previous novels: Bashert and Marc Marci

Book excerpt: Based on String theory, there is 3-cosmic framework of the Universe, which has triple cosmoses in the whole of space that can find a dark planet, located inside the Earth, but in the other cosmos than ours. Based on the 8 data of the cosmological parameters from the first year of WMAP observations to the Planck satellite observations in 2018, it can be speculated that the current dark energy should be taken as the residual energy of the Universe after the Big Ban. Due to the rapid expansion of other high-energy-density cosmoses, its dark matter should exert a gravitational pull on the stars of our low-energy-density cosmos that causes the effect of accelerating the expansion of our cosmos.
