Book excerpt: Hailed as a masterpiece, Jean Rouaud’s first novel, Fields of Glory, was awarded France’s most prestigious literary prize, the Prix Goncourt, and sold over a million copies worldwide. Of Illustrious Men establishes as fact what the first novel promised—that Rouaud is a writer of remarkable power, subtlety, and originality. Lovingly set in the same region as Fields of Glory, the novel is about the author’s father, Joseph, and a traveling salesman who died at forty-one and left a family in shock behind him. In the mind of the grieving eleven-year-old son—too young to have really known him—his father was a hero, a warrior, a legend of the Resistance during World War II. But the narrator is no longer that eleven-year-old boy; he is a mature and gifted writer. And though he may still ache for the loss of his father, he also knows that Joseph’s illustriousness can be found not only in the heady days of wartime glory but in moments of domestic tranquility. Of Illustrious Men evokes scenes of both war and peace with exquisite beauty and understated and poignant tenderness. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: You have urged me, Dexter, to follow the example of Tranquillus in giving a systematic account of ecclesiastical writers, and to do for our writers what he did for the illustrious men of letters among the Gentiles, namely, to briefly set before you all those who have published any memorable writing on the Holy Scriptures, from the time of our Lord’s passion until the fourteenth year of the Emperor Theodosius. A similar work has been done by Hermippus the peripatetic, Antigonus Carystius, the learned Satyrus, and most learned of all, Aristoxenus the Musician, among the Greeks, and among the Latins by Varro, Santra, Nepos, Hyginus, and by him through whose example you seek to stimulate us,—Tranquillus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jovinianus, about whom little more is known than what is to be found in Jerome's treatise, published a Latin treatise outlining several opinions: That a virgin is no better, as such, than a wife in the sight of God. Abstinence from food is no better than a thankful partaking of food. A person baptized with the Spirit as well as with water cannot sin. All sins are equal. There is but one grade of punishment and one of reward in the future state. In addition to this, he held the birth of Jesus Christ to have been by a "true parturition," and was thus refuting the orthodoxy of the time, according to which, the infant Jesus passed through the walls of the womb as his Resurrection body afterwards did, out of the tomb or through closed doors.

This is how Beethoven begins the letters whom he called his "immortal love" and, following in his footsteps Goethe, Voltaire, Napoleon, Simon Bolivar, Mozart, Lord Byron ... and more than fifty Illustrious immortals, will give us a walk through history; intimate and audacious story that will present the most incognito, human and unknown of whom, surely we will be able to learn to love fully and without fear. "Rejoice, it is still my true and only treasure, my everything as I am yours, the gods must grant us the rest, what must be, will be for us".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'De Viris Illustribus' is not St. Jerome's Magnum Opus. It offers brief biographies of some of the primary figures of the Christianity prior ot the year 400. It offers short glimpses into the narrative Christianity was composing about its own origins in the century following its de-criminilization. In a larger sense, it does perhaps represent some of St. Jerome's dual intellectual passions. The literary style that he employs is new for a churchman of his era, as it is a compilation of various hagiographies, abridged for the sake of the reader. Yet, the 'Coeur et Amina' of this literary style is perhaps more akin to great Latin orators, such as Cicero and Cato, whom St. Jerome held in the highest of esteem in his youth. In this way, 'De Viris Illustribus' serves as the first of many hybrids between pagan rhetoric and Christian piety.
