Book excerpt: This is the story of Benny the son of David Levi, the central figure of "Of Guns & Mules" and the five-year period he spent serving with the British army in World War II. Volunteering in the summer of 1940, Benny becomes a driver in a Jewish-Palestinian unit and sees active service in Egypt and North Africa. After taking part in the defeat of Rommel's Afrika Corps, he is sent to Italy via Malta. There he undergoes combat training and, as a fighter in the newly formed Jewish Brigade, participates in the Allies final push against the Nazis. He also takes part in the unofficial revenge squads that hunt down and kill escaping SS officers. During the war Benny meets and falls in love with Tamar and also learns about the plight of Jews who were killed in the Holocaust. When not on duty, and with American support, Benny and his friends help those who survived the Holocaust, rescuing many concentration camp survivors and helping them reach Mandatory Palestine. After the war is over, the Brigade is sent to Belgium. Here, Benny continues to help the Jewish survivors before returning to Tel Aviv to begin a new life with Tamar.

Book excerpt: The Hope of creation [mankind] characterizes the Hope of the Creator [God], who made mankind in His image. Mankind's relationship with wisdom to realize all Hope and purpose tragically imploded when mankind chose, his Hope & purpose to become God. In that moment, untruth was born. The Word from untruth characterized the Hope of Evil created by creation. The Word from Truth characterized the Hope of Good created by God, the Creator. Only God possessed the power to create. The plan to restore creation to its original purpose through the knowledge of Truth from God, is the essence of the battle fought in a realm that has no beginning and is without end. The assimilation of that Truth challenges the seed of hope, that mankind can somehow recognize that creation can rule and serve God, but not be God. This is mankind's hope for help, and this Perspective of Hope. Jay Allan Shears is an Orthodox Jew, who found his way through the whiles of life to his Messiah, Jesus Christ. He is the Board Chair of several companies, with extensive multicultural, high technology, marketing, and business development experience. Psychologist Michael McCullough argues that the key to a more forgiving, less vengeful world is to understand the evolutionary forces that gave rise to these intimately human instincts and the social forces that activate them in human minds today. Drawing on exciting breakthroughs from the social and biological sciences, McCullough dispenses surprising and practical advice for making the world a more forgiving place. Michael E. McCullough (Miami, Florida), an internationally recognized expert on forgiveness and revenge, is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, where he directs the Laboratory for Social and Clinical Psychology.

Book excerpt: For decades, we've been shocked by images of violent clashes between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. But for all their power, those images leave us at a loss: from our vantage at home, it's hard for us to imagine the struggles of those living in the midst of the fighting. Now, American - born Israeli David Shulman takes us right into the heart of the conflict with Dark Hope, an eye - opening chronicle of his work as a member of the peace group Ta'ayush, which takes its name from the Arabic for ''living together.'' With Dark Hope, Shulman has written a book of deep moral searching, an attempt to discover how his beloved Israel went wrong - - and how, through acts of compassionate disobedience, it might still be brought back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly before he died, Plenty Coups, the last great Chief of the Crow Nation, told his story—up to a certain point. “When the buffalo went away the hearts of my people fell to the ground,” he said, “and they could not lift them up again. After this nothing happened.” It is precisely this point—that of a people faced with the end of their way of life—that prompts the philosophical and ethical inquiry pursued in Radical Hope. In Jonathan Lear’s view, Plenty Coups’s story raises a profound ethical question that transcends his time and challenges us all: how should one face the possibility that one’s culture might collapse? This is a vulnerability that affects us all—insofar as we are all inhabitants of a civilization, and civilizations are themselves vulnerable to historical forces. How should we live with this vulnerability? Can we make any sense of facing up to such a challenge courageously? Using the available anthropology and history of the Indian tribes during their confinement to reservations, and drawing on philosophy and psychoanalytic theory, Lear explores the story of the Crow Nation at an impasse as it bears upon these questions—and these questions as they bear upon our own place in the world. His book is a deeply revealing, and deeply moving, philosophical inquiry into a peculiar vulnerability that goes to the heart of the human condition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scientist friend asked Bruno Latour point-blank: “Do you believe in reality?” Taken aback by this strange query, Latour offers his meticulous response in Pandora’s Hope. It is a remarkable argument for understanding the reality of science in practical terms. In this book, Latour, identified by Richard Rorty as the new “bête noire of the science worshipers,” gives us his most philosophically informed book since Science in Action. Through case studies of scientists in the Amazon analyzing soil and in Pasteur’s lab studying the fermentation of lactic acid, he shows us the myriad steps by which events in the material world are transformed into items of scientific knowledge. Through many examples in the world of technology, we see how the material and human worlds come together and are reciprocally transformed in this process. Why, Latour asks, did the idea of an independent reality, free of human interaction, emerge in the first place? His answer to this question, harking back to the debates between Might and Right narrated by Plato, points to the real stakes in the so-called science wars: the perplexed submission of ordinary people before the warring forces of claimants to the ultimate truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the winter of 1587 the Spanish Armada, the largest force of warships ever assembled, set sail to crush the English navy... pening at the execution of Mary Queen of Scots - the event that precipitated the launching of the Armada - Neil Hanson explores one of the most fascinating campaigns in European history over the eighteen months in which it developed. From the first whispers of the threat against England the the English crown to the return of the battered remnants of the fleet to Spain, it is a story rich in incident and intrigue which is told with a view to giving the reader a breathtaking overview. In this controversial study Hanson claims that the aim of Drake was not to sink the Armada ships but to disable and plunder them, and that Queen Elizabeth was a monarch who left many of the survivors of the battle to die of disease or starvation and whose parsimony, prevarication and cynicism left her unable to make crucial decisions. Drawing on previously undiscovered personal papers, Neil Hanson conveys in vivid detail how the highest and the lowest in the land fared in those turbulent months when the destiny of all Europe hung in the balance.
