Book Synopsis Five for Freedom by : Geoffrey Wagner
Download or read book Five for Freedom written by Geoffrey Wagner and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1972 Five for Freedom is a candid study of five European fictional heroines as anticipatory of contemporary feminism: Madame de Merteuil of Choderlos de Laclos’ Les Liaisons dangereuses, Jane Eyre, Emma Bovary, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, and Tony Buddenbrook. Professor Wagner clearly believes that, in the first place, the role of women in the development of fiction has been underestimated, while the claims to originality of many recent female liberationists have been equally overestimated. This is a far-ranging, lightly-handled book with insights into both mode of fiction, as it developed and answered women’s demands, and into the role of some of its leading heroines; for Professor Wagner’s studies do not limit themselves strictly to the ‘five for freedom’ but foray into Balzac’s Cousine Bette, Catherine Earnshaw of Wuthering Heights, Anna Karenina, and Eca de Queiroz’s Portuguese Bovary in Cousin Bazilio. This brilliant little study is topical, readable, yet learned. It will be useful for scholars and researchers of literature, Women’s studies, and Gender studies.
Book Synopsis French Orientalist Literature in Algeria, 1845–1882 by : Sage Goellner
Download or read book French Orientalist Literature in Algeria, 1845–1882 written by Sage Goellner and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book applies the growing theoretical field of hauntology to a body of literature which has previously been examined through the lenses of Orientalism and exoticism. Through a chronological study and close readings of the writings of Théophile Gautier, Eugène Fromentin, Gustave Flaubert, and Pierre Loti, the project identifies haunting echoes within the texts which demonstrate an ambivalence of attitudes towards colonialism and which undermine any claim towards a monolithic imperialist French ideology. Whereas hauntological theory has be used to illuminate literature from the Francophone post-colonial period, it has not yet been applied to texts produced during the French colonial period. The originality of this project thus lies in the application of Derridean hauntological theory to works from an earlier period, each of which in one way or another addresses the theme of colonial violence. By revisiting four classic works of colonial Orientalism with haunting as a principal theme, this analysis provides a critical witnessing of France’s violent colonization of Algeria that demonstrates France’s latent anxieties about the colonial project at the time.

Book Synopsis The Mystery Play in Madame Bovary Moeurs de Province by : Peter Séraphin Rogers
Download or read book The Mystery Play in Madame Bovary Moeurs de Province written by Peter Séraphin Rogers and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2009 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon Flaubert's fictional works, travel writings, correspondence, and notes on his reading of the Bible and interest in iconography, Rogers traces the presence of a liturgical drama, a mystery play, in a text known as iconic of the realist novel. Showing how Flaubert's use of religious tales, topoi, and imagery extends beyond his retelling of saints' lives in the Tentation de Saint Antoine and the Trois contes, this study elucidates the biblical and devotional subcurrent in the story of Emma Bovary. Biblical episodes, religious emblems, and discussions of Catholic dogma link the adulterous heroine to the Virgin Mary, who emerges in the course of this subtle reading as the other heroine of the scandalous story. The 19th-century impulse to censor is embodied within the novel by two characters representing the secular and religious poles. The free-thinking pharmacist Homais and the parish priest concur only on the dangers of reading the Bible. When the novel itself was brought to trial for attacking religion, Flaubert's prosecutor and defense lawyer overlooked this condemnation of scripture. This study invites readers to pay close attention to the religious texts and traditions discussed and restaged in Madame Bovary to gain a new awareness of the narrow bond between theatre and religion in Flaubert's provinces.

This book was released on 2024-09-28 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Literature and Art explores the links between literature and visual art from classical ekphrasis through to contemporary experimental forms. The collection’s engagement with diverse literary and cultural artifacts offers a comprehensive survey of the vibrant interrelationships that currently inform literary studies and the arts. Featuring four sections, the first part provides an overview of theoretical approaches to art and literature from philosophy and aesthetics through to cognitive neuroscience. Part two examines one of the most important intersections between text and image: the workings of ekphrasis across poetry, fiction, drama, comics, life and travel writing, and architectural treatises. Parts three and four consider intermedial crossings from antiquity to the present. The contributors examine the rich intermedial experiments that range from manuscript studies to infographics in graphic narratives, illuminating the vibrant ways in which texts have intersected with illustration, music, dance, architecture, painting, photography, media installations, and television. Throughout this dynamic collection of 37 chapters, the contributors evolve existing critical debates in innovative new directions. The volume will be a critical resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as specialist scholars working in literary studies, philosophy of art, text and image studies, and visual culture.
