Die vorgelegten Arbeiten verdeutlichen, dass jedes lebendige System uber die Kenntnis seiner Struktur, Funk tion und Geschichte Informationen zu einem tieferen Verstandnis des von ihm belebten Raumes liefert. Sie zeigen, dass letztlich jeder Suche nach "Belastungsindi katoren" und "okologischen Kriterien" die Frage nach dem Informationsgehalt von Organismen und lebenden Systemen sowie deren Reaktionen auf endo- und exogene Faktoren zugrunde liegt. Sowohl aus Veranderungen der Areal- und Okosysteme, als auch aus Wandlungen von Biozonosen und deren Reaktionen wurden Ruckschlusse auf die diese Veranderungen auslosenden Faktoren gezogen. Populationen und Bio zonosen reagieren naturgemass nach eigenen Regeln, konnen jedoch nur existieren, wenn sie bestandig auch Informationen uber andere Komponenten aus ihrem Ver breitungsgebiet speichern und verarbeiten. Diese adaptiven Fahigkeiten der unter suchten Arten und Systeme sind jedoch noch weitgehend unbearbeitet. Hier klafft eine echte Lucke, die den Transfer okologischer Daten z. B. in di. c Landesplanung erschwert. Die Qualitat jeder Planung hangt weitgehend von den eingesetzten okologischen, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Erhebungsdaten ab."

This directory therefore lists official and unofficial organizations, national and international, on all SUbjects: political, economic and social. Further information about the organizations listed can be found in the sources listed in the bibliography. Book excerpt: The effects of isolation, area size, and habitat quality on the survival of animal and plant populations in the cultural landscape are central aspects of a research project started in Germany in 1993 (,Forschungsverbund, Isolation, FHichengroBe und BiotopquaIiHit', abbreviated to 'FIFB'). After a long period of preparation, scientists from seven univer sities and one research institution started to work within the frame of this project. Fund ing for four years was provided by the former German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMFT), now the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). A strong focus of the project has been the improvement of the methodology for environmental impact assessments and the implementation of results into environmental planning. As there is a certain risk that national projects develop some kind of 'mental in breeding', it was decided to discuss concepts, methods, and first results with scientists of international reputation at a rather early stage of the project. For this purpose, an inter national workshop was held in the small village of Lubast, north of Leipzig (state of Saxony) in March 1995. 130 scientists from 10 nations met to discuss and debate issues surrounding habitat fragmentation for three days. Papers presented there formed the basis for this book. As discussions included general reviews as well as particular case studies, we decided to structure this book in a similar way. Consequently, a combination of broad and more general, review-like papers as well as original papers are presented.

These characteristics include the following: Speaking of 'goal functions' is a convenient 'fa~on de parler', since a logical analysis of the formal structure of teleological and causal explanations shows that both are analogous with regard to the inherent structural typology and the basic mode of explanation. Teleological interpretations introduce motives or objectives of actors into the set of 'antecedens' conditions relevant for system evolution, and are consequently a subset of causal interpretations.
