Book excerpt: This two-volume book provides a comprehensive, detailed understanding of paleoclimatology beginning by describing the “proxy data” from which quantitative climate parameters are reconstructed and finally by developing a comprehensive Earth system model able to simulate past climates of the Earth. It compiles contributions from specialists in each field who each have an in-depth knowledge of their particular area of expertise. The first volume is devoted to “Finding, dating and interpreting the evidence”. It describes the different geo-chronological technical methods used in paleoclimatology. Different fields of geosciences such as: stratigraphy, magnetism, dendrochronology, sedimentology, are drawn from and proxy reconstructions from ice sheets, terrestrial (speleothems, lakes, and vegetation) and oceanic data, are used to reconstruct the ancient climates of the Earth. The second volume, entitled “Investigation into ancient climates,” focuses on building comprehensive models of past climate evolution. The chapters are based on understanding the processes driving the evolution of each component of the Earth system (atmosphere, ocean, ice). This volume provides both an analytical understanding of each component using a hierarchy of models (from conceptual to very sophisticated 3D general circulation models) and a synthetic approach incorporating all of these components to explore the evolution of the Earth as a global system. As a whole this book provides the reader with a complete view of data reconstruction and modeling of the climate of the Earth from deep time to present day with even an excursion to include impacts on future climate.

These interactions conducted through physical, chemical and biological process es were described as early as Roman and Greek times. Marcus Vitruvius (75-25 B. C. ), a famous Roman engineer and architect, made the following observation about the climatic conditions necessary for founding a city: Land ideal for the health is slightly elevated and there should be neither fog nor frost. The direction of the slope and the distance to the swamps, lakes, and beaches must also be considered. The prevailing wind directions, observed by a wind tower at the center of the city, like Horologium at Athens, should be taken into consideration in city planning. The main and narrow streets should be placed in the middle angle of the two prevailing wind directions. Then the location of the Pantheons and squares should be decided. The influence of humans on climate was a major subject for discussion in the 19th century, inspired in part, by the rapid industrial growth and expanding deforestation of the time. D. L. Howard wrote brilliant pieces on the climate of London in the 1830s, while G . P. Marsh discussed the effects of forests on precipitation in the U. S . A. in the second half of the 19th century.

Book excerpt: Dynamic Analysis of Weather and Climate Atmospheric Circulation, Perturbations, Climatic Evolution Marcel Leroux This is an up-to-date textbook on meteorology and climatology with a fresh, unconventional view of the workings of the climate system, in which the author poses serious questions about the validity of certain aspects of current global warming theory. The book is divided into three parts. In Part I the author discusses general circulation in the troposphere. He argues that such circulation is driven by thermal deficit at the poles, causing Moving Polar Highs (MPHs), which have the principal role of feeding cold air towards the tropics. This in turn causes warm air to move up towards the poles. The relief and distribution of land masses, and the Earth’s rotation, control the trajectories of the MPHs, and the formation of Anticyclonic Agglutinations (AAs). The latter determine the properties of tropical circulation, the trade winds, and tropical monsoons. These discussions lead, in Part II, to a consideration of the dynamics of the weather through the study of perturbations, including precipitation, the role of MPHs in polar and temperate regions and at tropical margins, pulsations in the trade winds and monsoons, the concept of the meteorological Equator, and tropical cyclones. Part III reviews the causes of climatic variations, including solar activity, variations relating to the Earth’s orbit and axial inclination, volcanic eruptions and the anthropogenic greenhouse effect. The book concludes with a discussion of Palaeoclimatic variations and recent climatic evolution, including the Sahelian drought, changes in polar and alpine glaciers, and the El Nino/Southern Oscillation.
