Covering about 70% of Earth’s surface, oceans play a unique role for our planet and for our life – but large areas remain unexplored and are difficult to reach. Since the 1980s, Earth-orbiting satellites have helped to observe what is happening at the ocean surface. Sensors like CZCS, AVHRR, SeaWifs and MODIS provided the first ocean colour data from space. Starting in 2002, ESA's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on-board the environmental satellite Envisat, provided detailed information on phytoplankton biomass and concentrations of other matter in the global oceans. These satellite observations laid the groundwork for studying the marine environment and how it responds to climate change, and the research community has since delivered information on the variability of marine ecosystems. Part of this work is reflected in this stunning collection of peer-reviewed publications presented at the workshop, Colour and Light in the Ocean from Earth Observation (CLEO), held at ESA’s ESRIN site in Frascati, Italy, on 6–8 September 2016. The event attracted more than 160 participants from all over the world, including remote sensing experts, marine ecosystem modelers, in-situ observers and users of Earth observation data. Scientifically, the meeting covered applications in climate studies over primary productivity and ocean dynamics, to pools of carbon and phytoplankton diversity at global and regional scales. It also demonstrated the potential of Earth observation and its contribution to modern oceanography. Looking to the future, new satellites developed by ESA under the coordination of the European Commission will further our scientific and operational observations of the seas. With Sentinel-3A in orbit and its twin Sentinel-3B following in 2017, there is a new category of data available for operational oceanographic applications and climate studies for years to come. These data are free and easy to access by anyone interested. Looking at the role of oceans in our daily lives, I am sure that this collection of scientific excellence will be valued by scientists of today and will inspire the next generation to carry these ideas into the future.

The conference connected humanities, social sciences and scientific disciplines; this book collects some of the preeminent works focused on geo-strategic, cultural, environmental security and human security themes. The book is also an important contribution to the building of academic diplomacy in the region – that is to say, it contributes to region-building by creating epistemic communities and networks between government, the private sector, and academia throughout the region. Through the pursuit of academic diplomacy, academics are capable of pursuing research goals which enhance governmental, business, and civil society objectives of the day. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Journal of the Indian Ocean Region.

This book contains both sets of findings (i.e., the committee's review of the JSOST's draft plan [A Review of the Draft Ocean Research Priorities Plan: Charting the Course for Ocean Science in the United States] and the review of the final plan). This book recommends that JSOST employ a variety of outreach mechanisms to continue to engage nonfederal partners in ocean research planning efforts, such as establishing external committees to provide scientific and technical advice and to review progress on implementation of the research plan.

Gob spends a long time making his way through the thick jungle before he gets to the beach. He wades into the water. After swimming for several hours, he finally gets to an island in the middle of the ocean. In a small cave on the island, Gob finds a treasure chest full of things. One of them is a small gem that pulsed with a soft light. As soon as he picks up the crystal, he realizes that it is the key to opening the secrets of the sea, and he feels a strange rush of energy. Gob makes his way back to his people, the goblins, who are having a hard time making it through the harsh winter and are quickly running out of food and supplies. He shows them how the crystal can use the power of the ocean to bring warmth and plenty to their town. He also tells them how this is done. Gob and his friends come up with a way to use the power of the crystal to heat their homes and grow food. But their victory doesn't last long because a group of evil goblins who are jealous of Gob's success attack their town. They are willing to do anything to get the crystal because they want it for themselves. Gob gives the order for his friends to run away, but he stays put to fight the enemy. He uses the power of the sea to give himself a quick burst of strength and throw them crystal high into the air. The evil goblins are scared away, and the crystal shines brighter than ever before. But winning does not come without a cost. After letting out too much energy, the crystal breaks into a million pieces, which then scatters all over the forest floor. Gob's heart is broken, but he quickly realizes that the pieces of the crystal still have their life force. He puts all these parts together and comes up with a new way to use the power of the ocean. It's not as strong as the original crystal, but it's enough to support his group and keep them warm and fed. Gob realizes that the ocean's main secret is not just the energy it has, but rather the chance to work together and help each other that it represents. He has decided that information is not something that can be owned or controlled. Instead, it is something that should be shared and used for the good of society. He is grateful for the help and support he has gotten from his friends and advisors, and he knows that he needs to keep working with them to build a better future. In the end, Gob and his people learn to live happily with the sea and use its power to keep themselves and their community alive. When Gob looks out at the ocean and sees how big it is, it reminds him that he still has a lot to learn and understand. On the other hand, he is no longer afraid of things he can't know. He is sure that if he and his people work hard, don't give up, and stick together, they will be able to overcome any problem and use the power of the sea to build a better future for themselves and their society. When it comes to learning and understanding, "The Goblin and the Ocean's Secret" is an uplifting story that shows how important it is to be persistent, dedicated, work together, and be thankful. This lesson is meant for kids and teens. It also shows the possible benefits and risks of seeking knowledge and understanding, as well as the importance of putting information to use for practical reasons and the good of society.
