Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a lack of literature supporting the role of occupational therapy in cancer treatment. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cancer treatment on quality of life. This study was a mixed method study using a web-based, 47 question survey and a semi-structured interview, of eight, one hour, one on one interviews. Purposeful sampling was used to identify the eight participants that were interviewed. Physiological health, cognitive health and mood, social life, and sleep and fatigue were all found to be impacted by cancer treatment. Results of the study revealed that cancer treatment had a severe impact on energy level, aches and pains, appreciation of life, self-esteem, body image and worries about dying or the cancer coming back. Due to the nature of the disease, and the impact of treatment side effects on an individual's daily functioning, occupational therapists have the potential to play an integral role on the health care team throughout the cancer treatment process. While the role of occupational therapy in oncology is supported by the findings of this study, there is a need for additional research. Future studies are to be aimed at looking more closely at the role an occupational therapist can play at each stage of treatment from time of onset to remission.
