Book excerpt: The western tiger salamander (Ambystoma mavortium Baird) is a 'species of special concern' in the Canadian prairie provinces. Potential declines caused by habitat loss and fragmentation, emergent diseases, and fish stocking are reasons cited for this species conservation status. However, little data exist about the ecology, distribution, and abundance of this species in Canada, where the species reaches the northern extent of its global range. In the Beaver Hills of Alberta, I examined occupancy, abundance, and summer habitat of the western tiger salamander. In 2013, I surveyed potential breeding ponds for salamander occurrence and abundance and characterized the distribution of populations in relation to terrestrial habitat variables with generalized linear regression. In 2014, I conducted season-long capture-mark-recapture (CMR) studies at three study sites to characterize seasonal activity patterns of adults and larvae and population sizes. I then compared CMR density estimates among sites to relative counts observed during my low-intensity survey method to determine if counts from low-intensity surveys suitably characterized salamander population densities among sites. In 2013 and 2014, I tested the effect of baited funnel traps on adult and larval capture success, as ambystomatid salamanders are difficult to detect. The distribution of salamander populations was significantly related to northern pocket gopher density (Thomomys talpoides Richardson) adjacent to wetlands, but not land cover composition. Density when present was not significantly related to any terrestrial habitat features. Counts (from low-intensity surveys) accurately characterized population density, although density estimates were very imprecise. Seasonal pond-use patterns indicate that post-metamorphic individuals remain in wetlands to forage after breeding, which is atypical among ambystomatid salamanders. Lastly, baiting funnel traps did not affect capture success of post-metamorphic individuals, but light-baited traps captured significantly more larval individuals than non-baited traps. The key findings of this study are that salamander populations likely depend on small mammal burrows to overwinter and that wetlands are important summer habitat for post-metamorphic individuals. Further, baited minnow traps differentially affect distinct life stages of western tiger salamanders, and likely other ambystomatid salamanders.

Book excerpt: Emerging infectious diseases are one of the factors that have contributed to global amphibian population declines over the past few decades. The recent emergence of the highly virulent Amybstoma tigrinum virus (ATV) in tiger salamanders at three sites in Alberta has led to concerns regarding the population status of this prairie icon. Results from my population surveys showed that tiger salamanders occurred in approximately 50% of 15 sites in southwestern Alberta, but densities were low. In a longitudinal survey of a salamander population in Livingston Lake, Alberta in 2013 and 2014, ATV was strongly seasonal, increasing from 0 to 100% prevalence between early July and metamorphosis in mid-August. Despite a consistent seasonal pattern of exposure to ATV, host mortality was high in one year, but low in the next. These results suggest that ecological factors (i.e. triggers) act in addition to ATV exposure to contribute to ATV outbreaks and to variability in infection outcome in host populations.

Book excerpt: In Waterton Lakes National Park, located in southwest Alberta, Canada, under-road crossing structures were installed in 2008 to protect a population of long-toed salamander (Ambystoma macrodactylum) at Linnet Lake from mortality during breeding migrations that intersected with the park's entrance road. This compilation first investigates orientation and movement patterns of marked individuals at Linnet Lake in 2013 and 2014, and at a smaller, shallower wetland Stable Pond in 2014 to document in detail how long-toed salamanders used the terrestrial landscape around breeding sites during adult migration and juvenile dispersal. Following this, the authors use generalized linear models to model salamander occurrence and abundance in the Beaver Hills region of north-central Alberta as a function of land cover type and pocket gopher density. The authors go on to address whether any ecological barriers exist in the distribution range of the two newt species N. strauchii and N. crocatus. According to the findings of this study, an identity test was found to be significantly different from the null distribution, whereas a background test was not significantly different from the null distribution. The concluding chapter summarizes the processes by which light is converted into neural signals by rods and cones and then transmitted to downstream neurons in the retina, with a focus on salamander photoreceptors. The different types of photoreceptor cells and other light-sensitive cells in salamanders and their role in vision are also discussed.
